Chapter 39

Kelvin’s brows knitted together, his eyes so dark and icy that it made people shiver.

He was way too far from Edwina to rush over and stop Jacelyn.

She clutched the knife, charging forward and swiping it madly. The blade flashed in the sunlight, making her look even

scarier.

She screamed like a monster, Edwina, go to hell! Go to hell!”

Edwina was totally unfazed. She barely lifted her eyelids and gave Jacelyn a lazy look as she charged over.

The moment she swung the knife, Edwina caught her wrist with a swift, decisive move.

With a sharp metallic clang, the fruit knife hit the floor.

Edwina squeezed down hard, and a searing, bonecracking pain shot through Jacelyn’s wrist. She screamed in agony, crumpling inward.

In just a few seconds, Imelda’s hospital gown was drenched in cold sweat.

She rushed over, tears streaming down her face, and hugged Edwina tightly. Aged and slightly stooped, she couldn’t reach Edwina’s shoulders, so she wrapped her arms around her waist instead.

Edwina, I was scared of my wits! In all my years, I’ve never seen anything this frightening.

This was even worse than when I got kidnapped in my youth!Imelda gasped.

She just kept mumbling, with her words all running together.

Edwina’s brows furrowed slightly. She really wasn’t used to this kind of sudden affection and wanted to step back, but her body just wouldn’t move. Should I just shove her off? But that’d be way too harsh, she told herself.

Kelvin looked unperturbed as ever, but inside, his heart was a mess. For a split second, he actually panicked something he’d never felt before.

He lowered his eyes, and couldn’t help but wonder, If something really happened to her, what would I even do?he asked himself.

The man who always had everything under control suddenly found himself at a loss for words.

He hadn’t even realized how long he’d been zoning out. When he snapped back, he quickly walked over to Imelda. Grandma, let her rest a bit. Don’t keep hugging her like that, she’ll get worn out.”

Oh, yes, yes, you’re right,Imelda said, quickly releasing her.

Edwina shifted awkwardly, a hint of discomfort flickering in her eyes.

Her clothes were damp around her waist, and when she looked up, Imelda was really crying.

Her eyes shimmered, and she hesitated for a moment before reaching for a tissue and handing it to Imelda. Well, I’m okay. Don’t worry about me,she said gently.

She had seen others cry before. Beatrice and Benedict cried about her getting hurt, too.

But they only ever put on the waterworks in front of Anton, hysterically putting on show of caring for her, just to inherit the Lennox family fortune.

Chapter 39

It was all so phony and gross.

After leaving the Lennox family, Edwina started to realize that some things, some people, weren’t quite like she’d always thought. Like now, with Imelda, she’d only met her three times.

Imelda gave her nose a good blow. Alright, Edwina, as long as you’re safe, that’s all that matters to me.”

She tossed the tissue into the trash, then wobbled over to Jacelyn, her steps shaky and slow.

She was sprawled on the floor, glaring up at Imelda with pure malice in her eyes.

Suddenly, Imelda raised her hand and gave her a sharp slap right across the face.

She spat, Trying to set up Edwina? You’re not even qualified.

You’re supposed to be a doctor, but you’ve trampled your oath into the dirt!”

Joseph, deal with her right now! And not just by the hospital. I want the cops involved!Imelda added. Imelda was a real force back in her younger days, and even now, she was never one to be soft or indecisive. Playing the saint? That was for God. As for her, she’d send anyone who dared hurt Edwina straight to meet Him. Jacelyn burst out laughing like a maniac, her crazed laughter echoing through the room.

She glared at Edwina, her eyes wild and red. You messed me up! You wrecked everything I had!”

Don’t you feel even a shred of guilt? Have you no humanity left in you at all?Jacelyn shouted, her voice trembling with fury.

Edwina halted, towering over her with eyes as cool and clear as glass, and she said, Nobody gets to destroy your life. And even if someone could, and it sure as hell wouldn’t be me. Because honestly, you never even earned a passing glance from me.”

Youshe stammered, utterly shattered.

Edwina’s words landed like a slap to the face, Jacelyn was left speechless, her last line of defense crumbling.

Her hatred, her loathing, all those grudges turned out, it was all just in Jacelyn’s head. She didn’t even have what it took to stand on the same playing field as Edwina.

Her medical skills might’ve been lacking, but with time, she could’ve built up her credentials. Too bad her own jealousy was her undoing.

This was the first such an incident had occurred at Eden Hospital. Joseph apologized again and again, then called the cops to deal with the mess.

I’m gonna head out now, Grandma. Take care and get some rest, okay?Edwina said gently.

EdwinaImelda began.

She was about to keep her, but before she could finish, someone rushed in and interrupted her.

The woman strode in wearing a sleek business suit, her wavy hair framing her elegant features, though she looked downright panicked at the moment.

Helene practically dashed over to Imelda, worry written all over her face.

Grandma, are you alright? Are you hurt?she blurted out, her voice shaking with concern.

Chapter 89

I heard from the caregiver that something happened to you, so I dropped everything and rushed straight here. Grandma! let me see you,Helene pleaded.

Oh, Helene is here,” Imelda said, smiling kindly. I’m fine, really. Don’t worry about me

Helene gave Jacelyn a look full of reproach. You shouldn’t hurt others just to satisfy your own selfish desires. Hurting others will only come back to hurting you.”

Confess to the police and own up to what you did. Since you did look after Grandma before, I’ll help with matters concerning your family,Helene said.

Jacelyn stared up at Helene, her gaze unreadable, somewhere between gratitude and resentment. Guess I should thank you then, Miss Simmons,” she said flatly.

Everyone at the hospital always praised Helene for her beauty and genuine compassion. Even when upset, she never forgot the good things Jacelyn had done in the past. That’s the real bearing a distinguished family could have.

Grandma, are you hungry? Want me to feed you some soup?Helene asked.

No,Imelda cut her off, sounding distracted and a little curt.

She barely glanced at Helene, and her eyes were glued to Edwina, who was standing right by the door. All she could think about was not letting her leave.

But when she spoke to Edwina, her voice was tinged with hope, almost as if she was hoping for a bit of her attention.

Edwina, are you hungry? I’ll have lunch prepared. Is there anything you’d like to eat?Imelda asked eagerly.

No need, really. I’ve got something to take care of, so I’ll head out now,Edwina replied, giving a polite excuse.

With that, she left the hospital right away.

Helene watched her leave, feeling a sharp pang of jealousy.

What is it about her, anyway? How does she have Imelda totally wrapped around her finger?Helene wondered, her envy flaring up even more.

She swallowed her anger and jealousy, forcing a bright, fake smile onto her face.

Grandma, let me eat with you,Helene offered.

She threw a sly remark at Edwina. Looks like she’s not really into the kind of plain food you like, Grandma.”

Imelda hung her head, looking completely crestfallen as she let out a long, disappointed sigh.

Forget it, I’m not eating, she shook her head.

Helene, thanks for dropping by. I know work keeps you busy, so you should head back soon. Kelvinshe continued.

Helene felt a pang of disappointment, but then she thought, Well, if Kelvin takes me back to Gibson Group, that’d be perfect. It’d definitely stir up a lot of buzz.’

But to her dismay, Imelda spoke up.

Kelvin, get a driver to take Helene home, she said.
