Chapter 38

When Edwina threw her question at her, Jacelyn’s hand holding the syringe froze for a spilt second, but she quickly masked

her emotions.

Whatever little guilt she had left vanished completely after Kelvin’s recent words.

Even if she never became Mrs. Gibson, she was determined to reclaim her status at Eden Hospital and rise to a toptier physician.

But as long as Edwina was still in the picture, her career was stuck. That surgery was a black mark she’d never shake off.

With that in mind, Jacelyn kept her cool and shot back, I can tell what’s wrong with her just from my experience.”

It must be you. You injected the wrong medication! That’s murder. Just wait for the police to arrest you. I’m the chief physician. Who are you asking me?she added.

Edwina’s voice was steady, but in her beautiful eyes burned an unspoken fierceness and resolve that couldn’t be put into words.

How do you know I gave her the wrong medication?Edwina shot back.

IJacelyn faltered, nearly caught up by that woman’s words. What else could it be? If you hadn’t made a mistake, why would Grandma end up like this?”

Edwina’s eyes went cold as ice. What if I told you I never gave her the shot at all?”

Didn’t give her the shot?she was stunned, her hand shaking even harder. No way that’s impossible! How could you not have done it? But she clearly showed-”

An elderly yet surprisingly strong voice spoke up from behind.

What do you mean, exactly?Imelda herself snapped.

Then Imelda behind her tossed aside the blanket and sat up with unexpected energy. She looked lively and alert, not sick in the slightest.

Her voice rang out, furious. You didn’t even check the meds or examine me, yet you claim to know what’s wrong with me? So you’re the miracle worker now, Jacelyn Diaz? With such incredible skill, why couldn’t you cure me back then?”

Grandma, IFor a moment, Jacelyn felt her whole world collapse, and she was completely lost, unable to make sense of anything.

She wasn’t even sick at all. Jacelyn had just set herself up for disaster.

Jacelyn Diaz! I’ve been at Eden Hospital for a whole month, practically living side by side.

Just how cruel can you get? Messing with my meds just to hurt me, and pin it on someone else!Imelda shot back.

She sniffled, putting on her most pitiful face. Grandma, I swear I didn’t

mess up

the medication.”

Shut up! You sneak!Imelda snapped.

Edwina and Kelvin just stared, lost for words.

Kelvin pinched his nose. A reluctant amusement tugged at him as he wondered, Where does Grandma even learn these crazy phrases?‘

Chapter 38

Imelda was fuming. After all these years, someone actually had the nerve to try and pull a fast one on hier?

Just quit dreaming! As Edwina picked up that vial, even without any label, she immediately sensed something was wrong

She just popped it open and sniffed, then knew it wasn’t a nutrient but a diabetes medication! With instincts like hers, you’ll never catch up to her in your whole life!Imelda exclaimed.

Jacelyn’s world shattered, she broke down completely.

Her eyes blazed with disbelief and anger. So you all teamed up just to mess with me?”

Kelvin stepped forward, his eyes cold as he stared her down. Why would you take the bait? You really used my grandma’s life as your guinea pig? You must be tired of living!he spat.

His tone was laced with venom, dripping with sarcasm and bloodthirsty madness.

Edwina watched him quietly. It was only the second time she’d seen that expression on his face. The first was at the bar, when he beat Otis up for her. He’d been just as furious then, but he’d managed to keep it in check that time.

Jacelyn had never seen him like this. In her eyes, he’d always been polite, gentle, never throwing his weight. But now, it was like he’d become someone else entirely.

Terrified, Jacelyn dropped to her knees, shaking all over, but she stubbornly kept denying everything.

Edwina said coolly, Check the surveillance footage.”

A doctor plotting to murder her own patient.

Even if the patient wasn’t Imelda, this whole thing would’ve blown up big time. Joseph burst into the room, clearly rattled.

Mrs. Gibson, are you okay?he asked, worried all over his face.

I’m fine!she responded, pointing straight at Jacelyn. Fire her! No, I want the cops here. Have her arrested.”

Imelda already weathered countless storms and didn’t bat her tears.

What’s the point of having cops if an apology could fix everything?Imelda scoffed inwardly.

They pulled up the security footage from the pharmacy, but there was no sign of Jacelyn swapping out the meds.

In the video, she just mixed the meds just as she always did, and carried it out. Nothing out of the ordinary at all.

Jacelyn stuck her chin out, refusing to back down. See? I told you, I didn’t do it! This was all just a coincidence. Mr. Joseph, you’ve got no grounds to fire me.”

Joseph’s brow was deeply furrowed, not sure what move to make next.

So what, just because the Gibson family’s loaded, you think you can push around a doctor with no connections like me? Mr. Joseph, don’t tell me you’re really going to be an accomplice for them!she snapped.

Jacelyn was retreating to advance. She had no choice now but to go headtohead with the Gibson family. Forget about marrying into money; right now, she was just hanging onto her chief physician title.

She could resign if she wanted, but there was no way she’d let them kick her out.

Imelda was so mad at the woman for twisting the truth that she thumped her chest in outrage.

Imelda hissed, Jacelyn Diaz, you really have no shame! There’s nothing you won’t say, is there?

Chapter 38

The Gibson family has been in business for years. We have never engaged in shady deals or bullied others. You dare try to smear us? Are you crazy? You sure know how to spout nonsense!”

Everyone watching, whether inside or outside the room, was left speechless by her savage verbal barrage. Jacelyn got roasted so hard her face went from pale to red and back again.

Edwina kept her cool, thinking, Man, the Gibsons really have a way with words!

Jacelyn nearly collapsed on the floor, her voice trembling with panic. None of what you’re saying means anything. There’s no evidence! I’m innocent!”

Edwina, who hadn’t said a word this whole time, shot a glance at the security monitor, just one look and she caught it. Something’s not right here, she doubted.

This footage has been spliced. Hand me a laptop. Five minutes, tops, she said, her voice cool and assured.

Kelvin handed her the laptop with such perfect timing. It was almost like they were an old married couple, no words needed, just pure instinct.

O

She grabbed the laptop, fired up the security software, and hacked into the system effortlessly. Sure enough, she spotted all the signs that the footage had been cut and tampered with.

Stuff like this was a total joke to her.

She moved lightningfast, three minutes flat, and the deleted video of Jacelyn swapping out the meds was back.

Kelvin shoved the restored video right in Jacelyn’s face. The evidence is right here. Got anything left to say?”

She froze, looking like she’d seen a ghost, completely lifeless.

It’s over. Everything’s ruined,Jacelyn feared, her heart sinking into the abyss.

Edwina, you fucking bitch! I’ll kill you! I swear I’ll kill you!she shrieked with fury and desperation.

Scrambling up from the floor, she grabbed a fruit knife from the nightstand, and lunged at Edwina like a maniac.

Screams broke out around them.

Imelda was the loudest, yelling, Edwina! Edwina! Watch out!”
