Chapter 178

Chloe nodded in satisfaction.

Even though everyone had their own agenda, they knew when to play along.

She didn’t mind sharing some food with folks like that.

She walked into the gas station’s convenience store and cleared out every last bit of supplies in an instant; even the shelves were gone.

The refugees kept sneaking glances toward the gas station, their eyes full of pain. They pressed their lips together, but no one dared to speak up.

They knew just how powerful Chloe was. Sticking close to her was their only shot at surviving and reaching Bluehaven Base.

When Chloe turned to face the crowd, everyone quickly lowered their heads, keeping their eyes down and minding their own business.

It was as if none of them had seen what happened inside the store.

She couldn’t help but smile. Don’t worry. I’m not here to take your stuff. Once we get to the base, I’ll give everything back. Go on, hurry up and pack your things.”

Everyone was thrilled. They dashed off, packed up their things in a hurry, and came running back.

Some had ragged cloth bags, some managed to find backpacks, and a few even had shabby quilts draped over their shoulders.

With their dirty, haggard faces, they looked every bit like refugees on the run.

Just seeing the refugees lugging all their bags and bundles around made Chloe’s head hurt.

Even if they left with nothing, the road ahead was still ridiculously long; she honestly doubted if they could even hold out that far.

Who here can drive?Chloe asked.

Slowly, hands started going up around the group.

Aside from a handful of old folks and kids, pretty much everyone knew how to drive.

Perfect,Chloe said.

She pointed over there. There are plenty of cars. Team up however you like, no more than five in a group, and grab a car.”

Or if you can drive, you can take one on your own, just make sure you take at least one nondriver along,”

Chloe added.

She gestured to the guy in front. You handle dividing everyone up.”

Everyone rubbed their hands together eagerly, hardly believing their luck at actually getting to drive. Yet no one made a move.

Clayton opened his mouth to speak, then thought better of it.

Don’t worry. It’s safe over there. The zombies have already been cleared out,Chloe said.

Everyone lit up and dashed over. That sense of security, not having zombies breathing down their necks, was just incredible.

After that, Chloe called Clayton over.

She paused, then dumped out all the supplies from the convenience store. These are yours. You guys should divvy them up yourselves. That way, even if you get split up while driving, at least you won’t go hungry.”

Clayton was practically in tears. Thank you, Madam. You’re truly goodhearted.”

Chloe’s aura turned icy. I’m not a goodhearted person.”

She just figured they knew how to read the situation, and people like that were easy to manage.

Besides, in this dogeatdog apocalypse, being called goodhearted was basically a putdown. To her, it was as good as being cursed out.

Before long, everyone had picked out a ride they liked, and Clayton made sure everyone got their fair share of supplies. With that settled, they all fell in behind Chloe and set off.

The return trip went by even quicker than the journey out. After all, most of the supplies had already been picked clean on the way there; there just wasn’t much left to collect.

Suddenly, the car slammed on the brakes, coming to a sharp stop as the radio suddenly crackled with breaking news.

It said, A massive earthquake, tsunami, and landslides have struck Hevenseale hard. Countless mutant creatures have emerged from underground, and even the fish in the sea have mutated in horrifying ways.

Citizens are urged to stay away from Hevenseale for your own safety.”

The radio kept reporting, saying Hevenseale was now overrun with all sorts of insanely strong mutant creatures, some flying, some swimming, and even amphibious ones.

The battles between these mutants were ten times, even a hundred times more savage than any human fight.

When Chloe heard the radio say those mutants were tearing each other apart over something, she froze.

She bit down hard on her lower lip, leaving two clear imprints from her teeth.

Hevenseale really is something else,Chloe thought. There’s gotta be something in that city I want. Looks like. I’ll have to head back there when I get the chance.’

Now, Hevenscale had turned into a haven for mutant creatures. The entire city had sunk nearly to sea level, and the earthquake had completely transformed the landscape.

There wasn’t a single living person left in the city,

Chloe kept her foot to the floor the entire ride, not saying a word as she sped down the road.

The mutant cheetah sensed the tense atmosphere and didn’t dare bare its fangs. It just kept licking at the scraps of mutant serpent meat under its paw.

Phantom Zombie, riding shotgun, was totally focused on tearing into a huge chunk of serpent meat.

The mutant serpent’s meat had been scratched up by the mutant cheetah’s claws, and the venom had spread, turning it a dark black.

Honestly, except for the mutant cheetah and the zombie, nobody else could eat it.

Good thing both of them liked it. Phantom Zombie hadn’t tasted fresh meat in ages; if she hadn’t been getting regular core supplements, she’d probably be getting weaker by now.

Her usually blank, delicate face was now drooling as she ate.

The car sped down the road. Thanks to the soldiersearlier cleanup, there was barely anything in the way.

Every now and then, some zombies or mutant creatures with a death wish would stumble out, only to get oneshotted by Phantom Zombie.

Chloe couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw Phantom Zombie’s claws turning jetblack the more serpent meat she devoured.

They gleamed with a toxic shine; anyone could tell they were poisonous as hell.

Whoa, this guy just unlocked a new ability,’ Chloe thought.

The car sped along, stopping for just four hours at night. By the next morning, they had finally arrived outside Bluehaven Base.

The moment they pulled up outside the base, Chloe could tell something was seriously off.

Where the soldiers and powered humans used to stand guard, now all the soldiers were gone, and the gate was totally taken over by powered humans.

Chloe narrowed her eyes, sensing trouble.

Damn, the military must’ve been wiped out,she thought.

Chloe barely had time to react; she’d just shown up at the gate when every powered human there snapped to attention, acting like the final boss had just arrived.

Suddenly, an earthshaking drumbeat echoed out, and four cannons popped up on the base walls, their pitch- black barrels locked right onto Chloe’s ride.

.:.

Up on the wall stood a man with a limp, none other than Felix.

Felix was decked out in custom battle armor, his eyes icy cold as he looked down at the line of cars below.

A whole squad was lined up next to him, cight people in total, counting Felix. Every one of them had a razor- sharp gaze, and you could practically feel the pressure coming off them.

Not a single one of them looked familiar to Chloe.

When they locked eyes on Chloe, their abilities crackled to life, and they looked ready to throw down any second.

Chloe narrowed her eyes. Leon, the man in black standing dead center, was no doubt a fourthlevel powered human. Damn, he’s even stronger than James, she thought.

Having a guy like that show up? No wonder the military got stomped. Nobody could blame them.

At the same time, over twenty thirdlevel powered humans hopped down from the wall, landing as light as feathers.

But none of them came any closer. They just gave the cars a nasty look, clutching remotes in their hands, each one wearing a killer smirk.
