Emily shook her head and answered quickly, “No. I’m not unhappy.” 

Aaron lifted his hand slightly, as if testing something, and then smiled. “My hand seems to be able to hold a scalpel again.” 

There was an obvious implication beneath his words, but Emily deliberately pretended not to understand. She only smiled and said, “That’s good. In a few more days, you’ll be discharged. When that happens, you can-” 

Before she could finish, Aaron suddenly grew serious and looked at her. “I’ll perform the surgery for Ruth.” 

Emily froze and asked instinctively, “What?” 

Aaron looked up at her, his tone steady. “I don’t want you to be dragged into this anymore.” He paused and then added, “The most important thing for you right now is preparing for your exams. You shouldn’t be trapped in all this mess.” 

Emily’s eyes instantly reddened. “Then what about the injustice you’ve suffered? You’re just going to let it go?” 

Aaron lowered his gaze and smiled faintly. “Yes. That doesn’t really count for much.”

Emily felt overwhelmed with guilt. She pressed her lips together and said, “Aaron, I’m sorry.” 

“Emily,” Aaron said calmly, “I’m a doctor. I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do. You don’t need to blame yourself, and you shouldn’t think that I’ve suffered some great humiliation. I’m really fine.” 

That was what he said, but whether he was truly fine was something only Aaron himself knew. 

He was not like Ethan or Andrew. He came from an ordinary family, and he was the only one who had made it this far. 

The path he had struggled so hard to walk had been cut off so easily by others. 

He said he was fine, but how could he truly be fine? 

Emily wanted to say more. She wanted to persuade Aaron to think it over again, to not gamble his future on this matter. But just as she opened her mouth, Aaron interrupted her first. “Forget it,” he said softly. “Can you stop bringing that bland broth tomorrow? If this keeps up, I’m afraid my sense of taste will completely deteriorate.” 

The remark was not heavy–handed or deliberate, but it landed at exactly the point where the weight of the moment could no longer continue.

Emily looked at him, and the tension at the corner of her mouth finally eased. Her smile was faint, but genuine. 

Only after noticing it did Aaron continue, his tone returning to its usual calm. “You don’t need to take responsibility for everyone.” He looked at her, his voice quiet but resolute. “Finishing your own path matters more than anything else.” 

Emily gave a soft “Mm.” She stayed with Aaron for a while longer before leaving the room. 

As soon as she stepped out, she noticed Ethan standing against the wall. 

Emily was startled and raised a hand to steady her wildly pounding heart. 

She intended to leave, but Ethan spoke first. “I heard your conversation.” 

Emily thought for a moment and then said to him, “Good. I have something I want to talk to you about too.” 

Ethan replied, “All right.” 

A minute later, the two of them were in the stairwell.

Ethan said, “Once the situation is clarified, I’ll restore his 

reputation.” 

Emily was dissatisfied with that response and raised her voice. “Is restoring his reputation enough? What I want is Andrew to apologize to Aaron.” 

Looking at Emily’s face, twisted with anger, Ethan spoke calmly, “Just like you, I can’t make decisions for other people.” 

Hearing this, Emily was furious. She said sarcastically, “Then go pressure him. Go bother him. You go, Lydia goes, and Tyrone goes. You can even bring Matthew along.” 

Ethan ignored her anger. “Andrew is proud by nature. I’m afraid he won’t bow easily.” 

Emily found it even more absurd. “Does his pride really matter that much?” 

“I don’t know,” Ethan said quietly. 

Emily was beside herself with anger, her voice rising. “Then if Aaron had refused to do the surgery, would Andrew have clung to his pride and watched his mother die?”

Ethan fell silent and didn’t answer. 

Seeing him like this only made Emily angrier. 

She never should have come to talk to someone like him about 

these things. 

After calming herself, Emily said with a weary sigh, “Forget it.” 

With that, she reached out to push open the stairwell door and leave. 

At that moment, Ethan spoke. “I’ll talk to Andrew.” 

Emily didn’t respond. She pushed the door open and walked 

out. 

Two days later, Andrew posted a public apology on social media. That same afternoon, Aaron performed cranial surgery on Ruth at Keck Medical Center. 

The operation lasted a full seven hours and was a complete 

success. 

The following day, Aaron returned to work at Keck Medical Center.
