 is your husband abusing you? 

There was a moment of silence between us. I continued to feel his gaze on me. 

I still couldn’t bring myself to look at him. I was scared to see the judgement in his face. In the socialite world I was viewed as a woman so crazy and jealous her husband kicked her out of the house. It’s probably how he saw me as well. 

I began to think of all the possible reasons he had come to see me. Was he going to say he had a problem with me working at the company? 

“Jasmine…,” he started. My body froze when he said my name. I knew he was going to ask the questions I feared he would ask. “May I ask where you’re headed now?” he then asked me. 

“I have to pick up my son from school and then go home,” I informed him. 3 

“You’re going to pick him up on your own?” He asked me in disbelief. 

“Yes,” I slowly responded. Now he knew I didn’t have a driver. I was feeling more and 

more embarrassed the more I talked to him. 

An expression I couldn’t quite understand appeared on his face. He seemed to be contemplating. He then held out his hand. 

“Well then, may I offer to help you collect your child and giving you a ride home?” He 

then asked. 

My eyes widened in surprise. He surely couldn’t have come all this way just to give me a ride. He wasn’t going to ask me any of the blatantly obvious questions I’m sure 

wanted to ask. 

“Mr Carrington you are technically my boss I don’t want to impose,” I started. Why would he offer a rumoured crazy woman a ride home? 

“Nonsense, we’re both off the clock right now and no one from the restaurant can see us right now, so think of it as reconnecting with an old family friend,” he said to me. 

I looked at him skeptically unsure of what to say. 

“If you do, I just might turn a complete blind eye to today’s incident,” he then said to 

me with a mischievous smile. 

I turned red as I remembered spilling the drink on him. I thought he said he forgave

me so why was he mentioning it again? I felt I was being bullied by Louis. 

“Well then, if you don’t have an issue with it then I accept your offer, I told him seeing no other way out of it. 

“Excellent,” he answered. He took my hand and lead me to his car. He opened the passenger door for me and helped me inside, then went to the other side and got in himself. What a gentleman, I thought to myself. 

I was worried about riding with him and spending more time with him because inevitably I would have to explain my situation to him. However, Louis kept our conversation light and easy going in the car, surprisingly. I felt a little relieved. He told me about his life and the things that happened after the last time we saw each other. 

“…So I finished finished went to university and got a degree in Finance and business,” he told me. “I graduated just last year.” 

“Congratulations,” I said to him. 

“Thank you,” he said. 

“And now you’re the CEO of the Garden House?” I asked him. 

“Yes, my father appointed me less than a year ago,” he told me. 

It made sense that with the Robert jnr., his older brother, set become the heir of the company that their father would still incorporate them into the company somehow 

I hadn’t paid attention to either Elizabeth or Louis in my past life so I didn’t know what they did with their lives. 

“And your sister is in the business too?” I asked. 

“Yeah, she’s the CEO of one of the other subsidiary companies,” he explained to me. 

I internally scoffed at that. At least Louis‘ family was nice enough to let Elizabeth joining the business. My father unfortunately was misogynistic and believed women’s place was in the home. My mother was a stay at home wife and hence why he raised me to become one in future to marry off in a business deal. It was nice to know all members of the family were taking part in the business. 

Upon arriving at Tony’s school I got out of the car to get him. 

Once I collected him I explained to him that a colleague from my work had offered to us home. So as not to spook him when he met Louis.

On the way home Louis was polite and kind to Tony. He asked him questions about school and things he liked. I smiled at how friendly he was to him. I was feeling comfortable now. The anxiety I had had earlier was long gone. 

Upon arriving at my house. Louis helped us out of the car and lead us to the front door. I told Tony to go inside, clean up and get started on his homework. 

“…I’ll get started on dinner soon,” I told him. 

“Alright, mum,” he said and went inside. 

Although, I was dreading Louis asking me about my situation, it felt worse not saying anything. He had been kind to me this evening made me feel comfortable and even took me home. I’m sure he was curious about it. I had to explain to him what was going on. I was working at his company after all. I would explain to him before he left. 

With the sound of Tony’s footsteps disappearing in the background, I turned my attention to Louis who stood behind me. 

I was about to open my mouth to speak when he suddenly drew closer to me. I gasped wondering why. 

“Jasmine,” he said to me. “Are you okay?” he asked me 

“What?” I said in surprise at his question. 

“Is your husband abusing you?” He asked me. 

My eyes widened in horror. I looked into his eyes that had a serious expression.
