Chapter 182Â
All of these items were controlled by the soldiers. Since there were so few, they kept them for themselves and never got sold outside.Â
This was also a big reason why Chloe was willing to work with these hard–headed soldiers.Â
When Chloe said that, Graham couldn’t hide his smile.Â
“Do you really mean it?” Graham asked.Â
“Absolutely. I’m looking forward to working with you again,” Chloe replied.Â
Graham rubbed his hands together excitedly. “Captain Yates, could I ask you for a favor?”Â
“Go ahead, Graham,” Chloe replied.Â
“Here’s the thing. People from some other major bases are coming over in the next few days to trade supplies. I don’t really know how strong their teams are,” Graham explained.Â
He looked at Chloe with hopeful eyes. “Could you stay a few more days and join us as the deputy leader?”Â
As he said this, Graham gave a sheepish smile.Â
“Honestly, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it, but the powered humans in our team are just too weak. Having you around for a few days would really help us look good,” he added.Â
Chloe smiled, “Sure.”Â
Three days later, on a vast, open stretch of snow, a convoy of a dozen or so green trucks rolled in, with two massive fuel tankers that stood out starkly against the white.Â
A horde of zombies crowded together behind the trucks, howling and chasing after them.Â
Because of the freezing cold, both the green trucks and the zombies were crawling along at a slow pace.Â
The zombies‘ faces looked bluish and purple, probably frozen by the cold. Their clothes were in tatters, their shoes had huge holes, and some only wore one shoe, while the other foot was completely bare.Â
and a few had tiny, beady eyes.Â
Some had their sleeves torn clean off others were missing arms or legs, anÂ
All in all, they seemed to have been through hell.Â
Inside the last truck, someone was firing nonstop at the zombies charging toward them.Â
The zombies were knocked back by the force of the bullets. Some had their hearts shot through. Others had their legs blown off. Yet, they just kept coming, stubborn as hell.Â
Zombies had evolved. Guns no longer worked like before. Taking off the head or destroying the brain’s core was the only sure way to stop them. Bullets alone hardly made a difference.Â
But a sharpshooter was a whole different story. One well–aimed shot could pop the brain core, and the zombie would just drop like a sack of bricks.Â
But there were so many zombies. It was likeÂ
an endless tide.Â
“Shit… Dustin, turn us around. Forget it. Let’s bail. WhÂ
the hell are there so many zombies here?” Nina yelled.Â

When Nina saw that the zombie horde was even bigger than the last one chasing them, her hair stood on end as she shoutedÂ
at Dustin.Â
Before she could finish, the driver up front pulled off a reverse drift, spinning the truck around and cutting straight into the next lane.Â
He made that big rig look like it was in a street race.Â
That move exposed the second–to–last truck, and the powered humans inside instantly grabbed their guns and sprayed bullets at the zombies.Â
Just like before, it only slowed the zombies down for a moment.Â
No one in the truck cared how bad the snow was. They stomped the gas, wishing they could sprout extra legs and just fly out of there. But the wheels just spun on the ice, and the truck crept forward, slower than a snail.Â
Inside the big rig, everyone was white–knuckled and ghostly pale. Not a single word was spoken. They just gripped the handrails for dear life, faces drained of all color.Â
No one knew how long it took, but finally, the convoy came to a stop.Â
Still shaken, the powered humans looked back nervously and froze. The zombies that had been chasing them were now motionless, rooted in place about 160 feet behind.Â
They just stared at the convoy with lifeless eyes and then let out a chorus of chilling, ghastly shrieks.Â
Hendrix Maynard flung open the door, bolted out into the snow, and dropped to his knees, puking his guts out. Every now and then, he’d clutch his chest, still shaken to the core.Â
“Oh my god. I nearly died out here,” he gasped.Â
Just as he got to his feet, a wave of dizziness hit him. He glanced up and locked eyes with that Red–Eye Zombie at the front of the pack, and his scalp tingled with fear.Â
He scrambled back into the truck, yelling at the driver, “Go, go, go.”Â
Someone sharp–eyed noticed that the zombies were just standing there, frozen in place. Their hungry snarls were locked onto the convoy, but not a single one dared to step forward.Â
Dustin’s brow furrowed. “Nina, look at those zombies. Something’s not right. Seriously, this is weird.”Â
Nina, still pale and shaken, shot back, “What’s so weird about it? Just go. We’re almost at Bluehaven Base.”Â
Just then, a man stepped out of the first truck. He was skinny, maybe 5’7” at most.Â
His blazing red hair was unmistakable. Everything about him screamed street–tough arrogance, as if the world owed him a favor.Â
“Hendrix, what’s happening?” Dustin asked, bowing his head a little, trying to sound as respectful as possible.Â
Hendrix shot Dustin a lazy glance and then turned his eyes to the snarling zombie horde nearby. For once, the usual cocky attitude faded, replaced by a rare flash of caution.Â
“Keep your eyes peeled. Something’s not right,” Hendrix warned.Â
They were all veteran zombie hunters. If they got swarmed by zombies, it was a pain, but at least they knew there weren’t any boss monsters lurking nearby.Â
But when the zombie horde reached the hospital and just froze there, that only meant one thing. There was a high–levelÂ

mutant beast in the area.Â
Everyone was so tense. Nobody even dared to breathe.Â
But to their surprise, they made it through the hospital without running into any trouble at all.Â
“Hendrix, look over there. I swear there was a hospital right there. Where did it go?” Dustin blurted out.Â
In its place was just a massive crater.Â
5 vouchers,Â
Dustin was about to go check it out, but Hendrix stopped him. Even someone as fearless as Hendrix, just being here gave him the creeps.Â
Better to get out of here while they still could.Â
The truck sped away from the hospital and rolled into a small town, and everyone was blown away. Every scrap of supplies had been stripped clean.Â
The whole city was nothing but empty houses and bare concrete floors, not a single thing left.Â
“Shit, who the hell did this? Whoever it was, they’re even better at looting than me.” Hendrix spat on the ground.Â
Scarlet Hood beside him brushed a stray lock from her forehead, her voice dripping with temptation. “Hendrix, you can tell right away this was done by a space–powered human. No way a regular scavenger could clean out a place this spotless.” Not even a scrap of paper was left behind.Â
If it was just normal scavengers, they’d only take what they needed and wouldn’t waste time grabbing stuff nobody wanted. Hendrix pulled her in for a deep kiss. “If there really is a space–powered human out here, guess this trip wasn’t a waste after all.”Â
As he glanced at the empty, looted streets on both sides, his eyes gleamed with greed.Â
He thought, “That’s a ton of loot. If we could haul all that back to the base, we’d be rolling in cash.Â
“Scarlet, have you upgraded your space ability yet?” Hendrix asked.Â
Scarlet’s eyes flashed with pure temptation, every glance oozing seduction. Hendrix felt his knees go weak.Â
She giggled behind her hand. “With all the cores you’ve fed me, if my space ability still hasn’t advanced, I’d really be letting you down.”Â
