Chapter 205

By now, Briana saw no point in hiding anything anymore.

She stared straight into Shepard’s eyes.

She wanted him to truly experience the pain she’d been through.

No, that was not enough.

He had to hurt more than she ever did.

“Shepard, you only knew I was pregnant, but you had no idea that when I went for the checkup, the doctor told me I was carrying twins,” Briana said, her voice steady but her eyes burning.

It left Shepard completely speechless for ages.

Just being able to have a child with Briana already made him feel incredibly lucky and happy.

Now she was telling him that she was carrying twins.

His heart just shot straight up to cloud nine.

He was going to be a dad to two kids.

“But then the doctor told me that one of the twins didn’t have a heartbeat. It couldn’t make it. I had to let it go. I could only save one baby,” Briana said, her voice trembling.

Just remembering it made Briana’s heart ache all over again.

She said, “I just couldn’t figure out why there was no heartbeat. I kept pestering the doctor for answers, and at first, he just said it could be all sorts of reasons…

“But finally, he admitted that it was because I was so down, so emotionally wrecked, that it took such a toll on my body, and that’s why one of the embryos couldn’t survive.

“Honestly, being able to keep even one baby was already a stroke of luck.”

Briana blinked, her gaze locked on Shepard’s hard, unyielding face. “This marriage brought me nothing but endless pain. It hurt me, and it hurt that baby… It was gone before it even had a chance to exist in this world.

“Shepard, I had to have surgery to remove the embryo without a heartbeat, just to protect the other one. But… I was married, and the surgery required my spouse’s signature.”

She let out a bitter laugh. “You already know the rest.”

Shepard finally got it.

The truth hit him like a truck.

No wonder she tucked that surgery consent form in with the divorce agreement and got him to sign without him even realizing,

No wonder he thought she’d lost the baby.

Yeah, one was gone, but there was still another.

Shepard had no idea what kind of hell Briana had endured during that time.

On one hand, a marriage was shattered beyond fixing.

On the other hand, one of the babies she was carrying had to be gone.

She was shouldering an unbearable burden, fighting through it all by herself, barely keeping it together.

“Are you satisfied now?” Briana asked, her voice trembling. “Shepard, that’s everything. That’s the truth you wanted. And Henry knew it all.

“He claimed the baby as his own, just to help me out… Even if it meant facing your wrath or risking the Parker Group, he never flinched.

“He even wrote this letter in secret, hoping that one day, if we ever had a shot, we could truly be together, and that the lie about the baby wouldn’t mess up what we had.

“He’s that amazing. And you? Can you even measure up to him in any way?

“Shepard, why couldn’t it have been you who died?”

Briana’s emotions finally shattered.

She crouched on the floor, sobbing uncontrollably, clutching her knees and burying her face in them.

Her cries echoed through the studio.

She let it all out.

Briana had always put on a strong front in front of others, hardly ever shedding a tear, and she’d never broken down crying her heart out like this before.

But right now, she just couldn’t hold it in anymore.

All her grievances, her past, and her struggles replayed in her mind, scene after scene.

Briana was just a person, with a heart, with feelings, with flesh and blood. She could hurt, too.

Briana didn’t want to put on a brave face anymore.

She just needed to let it all out.

After all those years, spending her life chasing after love, she ended up getting nothing.

Just a body covered in scars, and she’d lost the ability to love anyone at all.

She said, “When I needed you the most, Shepard, where were you? You were busy with Vivian…

“I came back from the hospital with the ultrasound report, wanting to tell you I was pregnant, and that only one of our babies made it. And you? Where were you?

“Vivian came back to town, and the moment she called, you dropped everything and went to pick her up at the airport. You didn’t even bother coming home that night.

“You keep calling me heartless, Shepard. But did you ever think about how much you hurt me? Did you even care?”

Briana was losing it, her voice raw and hoarse from all the crying.

Shepard looked down at her, and then crouched down beside her, his knees bent, barely touching the ground.

He reached out and gently stroked her long hair.

“Briana, let’s forget the past and move forward. Let’s start over, okay?” he said softly. “For the sake of our child… and for Henry, who went out of his way to get us back together.”

Before, Shepard wouldn’t even mention getting back together, not a single word.

He knew for sure she’d reject him.

And honestly, he didn’t even deserve to ask.

Back when he didn’t care, he acted like she didn’t exist. Now he was sorry, and she wouldn’t just get back to him that easily.

Not a chance.

So, Shepard was busy negotiating the details of the divorce.

Even when the Carter family urged him to delay things, to try and patch things up with Briana, to coax her back gently, he refused.

He was just too ashamed to even try.

But now that he knew he and Briana had a child together, there was just no way he could walk away.

No matter what, a man who had any backbone should always look after his woman and his children.

“Briana, I can’t just stand by and watch you raise our child all on your own,” Shepard said, his voice thick with emotion. “And I could never take our child and leave you with no one to lean on…

“So, can we try again? Just give us another shot, okay?

“Give me a chance. Give us a chance.”

Briana just kept shaking her head, refusing him again and again.

When Shepard reached out to touch her, she knocked his hand away.

He wouldn’t give up and tried again, but she pushed his hand aside once more.

After several attempts, Shepard’s hand was left red from her repeated rejections.

He let out a quiet sigh and just crouched there in front of her, quietly keeping her company, staying by her side no matter

what.

He waited patiently for her to settle down, never rushing her.

“Just go,” Briana said, lifting her tear–streaked face. “Shepard, get out of here right now. I never, ever want to see you again!”

“I was ready to leave, to stay behind you and quietly watch over you for the rest of my life. But Briana, now that I know we have a child together, I just can’t bring myself to do that anymore,” Shepard said.
