Kelvin fixed his gaze on Edwina, his deep, dark eyes seemed to be swirling with a galaxy,Â
He repeated quietly, “Miss Lennox, I have something important to discuss.”Â
He bit out each word, his tone unwavering and resolute.Â
Darius‘ gentle features hardened with anger. “Kelvin, this is the Simmons family, not the Gibson family. You can’t just throw your weight around here.Â
“You have no right to boss my daughter around!”Â
Kelvin didn’t even glance at Darius. his gaze never left the calm and collected Edwina.Â
He asked, “I’m not giving you orders, Miss Lennox. I’m just asking. Can we talk for a minute?”Â
“Okay,” Edwina said.Â
She knew that secrets would never stay buried for long. Still, she hadn’t expected everything to blow up today.Â
Edwina turned to Darius. “Why don’t you all head downstairs? I’ll talk to him alone.”Â
“I’ll stay here with you. If he tries anything, I’ll be here to protect you,” Gloria said.Â
Darius gently pulled Gloria out of the bedroom. “Come on, let’s not get involved. If Kelvin really meant Edwina harm, he wouldn’t have been so desperate to save her just now.Â
“Do you even realize how solid our bedroom doors are? He busted right through it. He literally threw himself in to save Edwina!”Â
Gloria snorted, clearly not happy. “Darius, are you just trying to cozy up to him for some business secrets? Are you planning to trade our daughter for a deal?”Â
“Honey, that’s not fair. I’ve been wheeling and dealing for decades. There is no way I need tips from some rookie. If anyone’s getting sold, it’s me, not our kid!” Darius said.Â
“Cut it out,” Gloria said, but she couldn’t help laughing. Her mood lightened up a bit.Â
The sun had disappeared beyond the horizon, and a gentle veil of night settled over the world.Â
Kelvin’s voice carried a hint of self–deprecation.Â
He asked, “So, should I call you Edwina, Miss Lennox, or Miss Simmons?”Â
He couldn’t help but mock himself for not seeing through Edwina’s ties to the Simmons family sooner.Â
She’d had him chasing shadows, and it was all right there in front of him, yet he’d missed her true identity for so long.Â

Edwina sat back down at her desk, picked up her pen, and went back to sketching.Â
“So, what did you want to say? I’m listening,” she said, not even looking up.Â
BNILEÂ
Despite his anger, Kelvin found himself chuckling at the way she just shrugged him off, her cool, almost indifferent attitude making it impossible to stay mad.Â
‘She really doesn’t care about a thing. She is just like a stubborn lone wolf, Kelvin thought to himself.Â
“You know who put that signal blocker outside the door, don’t you?” Kelvin asked.Â
“Yeah,” Edwina replied, her pen never stopping. The faster she finished, the faster she could turn it in and get paid.Â
Kelvin guessed right. Knowing how sharp Edwina was, she definitely knew the door was locked and the signal was dead.Â
The only reason she kept quiet was because she was totally fine with being locked in.Â
“Helene did it?” Kelvin asked.Â
Edwina’s pen finally paused. “Smart guess.”Â
Kelvin leaned in a little, stopping right in front of her desk, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “Edwina, you did this on purpose, didn’t you?”Â
She drawled, her voice lazy and unbothered, “Yeah, so what?”Â
“Edwina, you know what happened to the last person who tried to play games with me? They’re already in hell,” Kelvin said, his voice low and dangerous.Â
Edwina finally looked up at him, her eyes still cool and indifferent, with a touch of disdain. “Are you threatening me now? Planning to kill me?Â
“Go ahead, Kelvin. Let’s see if you’re really up to it.”Â
Suddenly, Kelvin bent down, closing the gap between them until they were just inches apart. If he leaned in any further, he could have kissed her.Â
Edwina’s gaze sharpened instantly as she tried to pull away, but Kelvin’s hand caught the back of her neck, his grip firm and unyielding.Â
Their eyes met, and the tension crackled in the air between them.Â
His eyes softened with a genuine smile. “Edwina, you really think I could ever hurt you?Â
“Don’t forget that there’s an engagement between the Gibson family and the Simmons family.”Â
Edwina was alerted. “Aren’t you here to break off the engagement?”Â

Kelvin replied, a playful glint in his eyes, “Yeah, that was the plan. But I changed my mind. Turns out, keeping a stubborn wolf around might be more interesting than I thought.”Â
Edwina didn’t waste time talking and striked. She thought, ‘Unbelievable. Even with a busted arm, this just won’t quit running his mouth.Â
guyÂ
Though Kelvin was injured, he was quick as ever. He jerked back in a split second, but Edwina’s fingers slashed across his collar, yanking off his tie and snapping a button loose.Â
Kelvin said, a playful glint in his eyes, “Not bad, Edwina. You just keep surprising me. You’re getting more and more fun.Â
“Relax, I’m not breaking off the engagement with the Simmons family.Â
“We’ve got plenty of time. We can take our sweet time messing with each other…Â
He raised an eyebrow, his chiseled face the very picture of smug satisfaction.Â
Edwina bit her lip, leaving a faint pink mark. For the first time in ages, her usual cool was rattled, Kelvin had actually managed to get under her skin.Â
‘This is the Simmons family’s house. I can’t just make a move here,‘ she reminded herself.Â
Edwina pulled herself together, refusing to let a guy get to her.Â
Ivan’s voice came from outside the door. “Miss Lennox, are you ready?Â
“Mrs. Simmons wants you downstairs. They’ve found the culprit behind the attack on you.”Â
Edwina set her pen down, shot Kelvin a glance, and headed straight downstairs.Â
The living room was quiet. Every so often, the sound of a woman crying cut through the silence.Â
Lanette was kneeling right in the middle of the room, eyes puffy and wet, a nasty bruise darkening her forehead. She looked totally wrecked.Â
Gloria glared at her, her eyes sharp as knives, nothing like the gentle, loving woman she usually was. “Spill it! Who put you up to this?Â
“You are working for the Simmons family, yet you still dared to pull this kind of dirty trick under my nose. You should count yourself lucky that Miss Lennox is fine.Â
“If anything had happened to her, I’d skin you alive. Yet you will never be enough to make up for the pain my daughter goes through.Â
Kelvin shot a look at Edwina. The Simmons family had taken her in recently. From the way they treated her, it was clear she was their absolute favorite.Â
He’d already gotten on Gloria and Darius’s bad side by talking about breaking off the engagement. If he wanted to marry Edwina now, it was gonna be a nightmare.Â

But Kelvin didn’t even realize how messed up his own logic was. He was already scheming how to marryÂ
Edwina.Â
Lanette was a mess, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe, shaking all over, clutching her shirt like it was her lifeline. The whole time, she didn’t dare glance at Helene once.Â
Lanette stammered, “Mrs. Simmons, it was all me. I got greedy, thinking if Helene married into the Gibson family, I’d get a piece of the good life too.Â
“I totally lost it and tried to lock up Miss Lennox so she couldn’t see Kelvin.Â
“Mrs. Simmons, I am so sorry!”Â
Lanette kept pleading and hitting her head on the ground. The bruise on her forehead was turning a nasty shade of purple.Â
Gloria turned to Helene, her face serious. “Helene, are you honestly saying you had no clue what Lanette was doing?”Â
“I…” Helene looked over at Lanette, her stomach churning. She never imagined Lanette could be so loyal. After a moment, she said, “Mom, I swear, I really didn’t know.Â
“Why would I ever lock Edwina up? No matter how much I like Kelvin, I’d never do something that vicious.” Lanette was putting on a real show, tears streaming down her face like she was the star of a soap opera.Â
Edwina didn’t bother to expose her because she felt that there was no point. Lanette’s stunt hadn’t done her any harm.Â
If anything, it had actually worked in her favor. Lanette just hadn’t expected to end up blowing her cover.Â
