Chapter 129 Sophie’s Under the Weather

That night at Carter Manor, after Emily fetched Molly, without delay, Molly scurried into the kitchen to reheat the omelet she’d whipped up earlier.

Once plated, she placed it before Emily, anticipation lighting up her eyes.

The omelet, to put it mildly, wasn’t a culinary masterpiece. But Emily polished it off. She heaped on the compliments and then, in a gentle tone, offered some constructive pointers.

Molly, all ears, nodded and vowed to perfect it next time.

After the meal, the family settled in for a cozy chat, sharing stories and laughter.

Upstairs, as Emily finished her nightly routine and reached for her phone, her eyes widened at the sight of over a dozen missed calls from Ethan.

Just then, the phone buzzed again with his incoming call.

Emily’s gut feeling told her that he must have been facing some urgent matter. So, without any hesitation, she answered the phone right away.

Emily bristled at the tone. Ethan, my business is my own. What’s it to you?she shot back.

Sophie’s under the weather. Get back here and have a look at her,Ethan said, trying to rein in his temper.

At the mention of Sophia’s illness, Emily’s heart skipped a beat. She sprang up from the bed, not even bothering to change out of her pajamas, and dashed out of the room.

What’s going on? She was fine this afternoon,Emily asked as she rushed downstairs.

Ethan regained his composure and spoke in a much gentler tone. Rebecca told me that after dinner, Sophie went up to her room. But then she started whining about a bad tummy. It wasn’t long before she barfed up all her dinner,he said.

This news made Emily even more frantic. She dashed downstairs in a hurry.

It was late, and she didn’t want to rouse the family. So, Emily slipped out quietly and hopped in the car, driving straight to Joy Gardens.

As she pulled up, she could see Rebecca pacing the living room, Sophia in her arms, worry etched across her face.

her voice on the verge of breaking.

Outside, the rain had let up a bit but still pattered down.

Emily, in her haste, didn’t grab an umbrella, and her pajamas. were soon damp.

She tossed the car keys aside and, without bothering to kick off her shoes, rushed over to Rebecca and took Sophia into her embrace.

Sophia was dozing lightly. At the sight of Emily, she mumbled, Mommy.”

Emily pressed her lips to Sophia’s forehead. It wasn’t warm, so a fever was off the table. Sophie, tell me where it hurts, she said softly.

As a pediatric surgeon, Emily knew the ropes.

Sophia, too weak to be her usual feisty self, leaned into her

mom.

When one was feeling lousy, there was nothing like the comfort of a loved one.

Right now, seeing her mom was like a breath of fresh air to Sophia, just as a hungry person would feel when they spot a delicious meal.

questions along the way.

After a thorough check, she suspected it was a digestive problem.

But without proper tests, she wasn’t about to jump to conclusions.

Let’s go to the hospital, honey. We’ll get an abdominal ultrasound,Emily said, scooping Sophia up.

Sophia’s eyes welled up at the mention of the hospital. Mommy, I’m scared, she whimpered.

Emily stroked her hair. Don’t be scared. Mommy’s right here with you.”

No matter what had happened between them, Sophia’s wellbeing was Emily’s top priority.

Swiftly, Emily gathered Sophia in her arms and rushed out of Joy Gardens. Rebecca followed closely, holding an umbrella to shield them from the rain.

Together, they made their way to the hospital. Once there, Emily accompanied Sophia for an abdominal ultrasound. The results showed that Sophia was suffering from indigestion along with some issues related to her abdominal lymph nodes.

sophia looked dreadful, her complexion as pale as a ghost.

The doctor prescribed some digestive pills and probiotics. Rebecca went to get hot water, and Emily carefully helped Sophia take the medicine.

After taking the meds, instead of dozing off, Sophia propped herself against the bedrail. In a weak voice, she said to Emily, Mommy, I’m starving.”

It made sense, considering she’d emptied her stomach earlier.

Emily tenderly stroked Sophia’s forehead and asked, What do you fancy? I’ll go get it for you.”

I could really go for some soup,Sophia replied.

Emily gave a soft smile. Alright.”

Leaving Rebecca to keep an eye on Sophia, Emily grabbed the umbrella and stepped out of the hospital.

Only then did she realize how disheveled she looked, still in her pajamas with her hair all over the place. She must have looked like a mess to passersby.

As she walked about 500 yards from the hospital, the rain suddenly picked up. Despite the umbrella, her shoes and the bottom of her pants got soaked.

But the thought of Sophia’s empty stomach spurred her on. Emily pressed on through the rain until she reached a 24hour

served soup.

She left the umbrella by the door and pushed open the diner’s door. To her surprise, she bumped right into Lucas.

Lucas did a doubletake when he saw Emily in her pajamas. Frowning slightly, he blurted out, Mrs. Wilson?”
