Chapter 136 She’s the One Ethan LovesÂ
Letting out a puff of air, Melissa piped up, “Emily, while I was over at the gynecology inpatient unit earlier, I’m pretty sure I spotted Ethan.”Â
There was a brief hesitation from Emily before she responded flatly, “Mhm.”Â
Unable to keep it bottled up any longer, Melissa blurted out, “But he was with a woman. They were all chummy, chatting and laughing away like they were a couple.”Â
Emily immediately knew who the woman was. Still, she kept her cool and simply said, “Got it, Melissa.”Â
Noticing Emily’s unruffled demeanor, Melissa couldn’t help but voice her concern, “Emily, are you seriously okay?”Â
Emily replied, “Her name’s Nancy Thompson. She’s the one Ethan loves. Melissa, the one not loved is the real loser here.”Â
Indignant, Melissa retorted, “But come on, you’re the one legally hitched to him. What’s that woman if not a homewrecker?”Â
With a bitter laugh, Emily said, “In Ethan’s eyes, I’m the interloper, I guess.”Â

Trying to change the subject to something more positive, Melissa asked, “How’s your health? All better now?”Â

Emily nodded with a small smile. “Yeah, I’m back on my feet.”Â
Melissa sighed in relief, “Good. Don’t go hurting yourself over that jerk. It ain’t worth it.”Â
With a faint smile, Emily chose to stay silent.Â
After lunch, Emily took care of her daughter Sophia’s nap time. Once the little one woke up, they headed to the amusement park for some fun.Â
Around five o’clock, Melissa called to say she was close by.Â
After dropping Sophia off at home, Emily freshened up and stepped out.Â
She took Melissa to a swanky French bistro.Â
During the meal, Melissa ranted nonstop about Ethan, but Emily just listened with a half–smile, not really in the mood.Â
After the delicious French cuisine, they strolled into the mall.Â
After helping Melissa pick out a couple of trendy outfits, Emily found herself drawn to the children’s section.Â

Despite Sophia’s apparent dislike for her, Emily wandered in, thinking about getting some clothes for her daughter.Â
Inside, she quickly filled her arms with all sorts of cute stuff for Sophia.Â
Melissa shook her head. “You’re spoiling her, girl. You should treat yourself more often instead.”Â
Emily gave a sad smile. “This might be the last time. Who knows when I’ll get to do this again?”Â
With no other choice, Melissa tagged along patiently.Â
After piling up several shopping bags, Emily decided it was time to pay.Â
The clerk rang up the total and said, “Eighty–eight thousand dollars.”Â
Emily was a bit taken aback but quickly composed herself.Â
This was a high–end kids‘ brand, so the prices were steep.Â
Over the years, she’d been here many times to shop for Sophia, and the bills always ranged from a few thousand to over 10 thousand dollars.Â
Emily didn’t question the price.Â

After all, Ethan had given her a credit card and loaded it with money every month for Sophia’s expenses.Â
At first, she’d been careful about checking the balance, but Ethan was so generous, putting in a million at a time.Â
She never spent it all, so eventually, she stopped bothering to check.Â
The hefty price tag gave Melissa quite a jolt. But then it dawned on her: these were Ethan’s wife and daughter. Naturally, they’d splurge on top–notch stuff.Â
After all, Ethan was rolling in dough.Â
Emily dug into her purse, pulled out the bank card, and handed it over to the sales clerk. “The PIN’s 990824,” she said.Â
The clerk swiped the card through the card reader, and a dreaded message flashed up. “Payment declined.”Â
The words hung in the air, and Emily stood there, rooted to the spot, her mind going blank.Â
The clerk knew Emily well, aware of her spending habits. But this failed payment? It caught her off guard, too.Â
Melissa was left scratching her head. “What’s going on?” she exclaimed.Â

looks like your card’s been frozen.”Â
Emily’s brows knitted together. “No way. How could that happen?”Â
The clerk double–checked and then said with certainty, “Ms. Carter, it’s definitely frozen.”Â
Emily just stood there, lost in a daze for what felt like an eternity. Finally, she managed to say, “Could you please set these items aside? I need to step out and make a call.”Â
With that, she grabbed Melissa’s hand and hightailed it out of the kids’ section.Â
Once they reached the stairwell, Emily didn’t waste a second. She pulled out her phone and punched in Ethan’s number.Â
She’d braced herself for a long wait or maybe even voicemail, but to her surprise, the call connected right away.Â
“Everything okay? Is Sophie feeling sick again?” Ethan’s voice crackled through the phone, laced with worry.Â
Instead of answering, Emily cut straight to the chase. “Ethan, the bank card you gave me? It’s frozen.”Â
