Chapter 142 She’ll Stay 

The next day was Sunday. Emily took Molly to an amusement park, and they stayed out until a little after five in the afternoon before returning to Carter Manor. 

By the time they arrived home, Chloe and Linda were already in the kitchen preparing dinner. 

After dinner, the family went out for a walk together. 

Emily’s phone rang abruptly. She took it out and saw that it was a call from Vanessa, someone she hadn’t been in contact with for a long time. 

After answering, Vanessa’s voice came through, calm and restrained. “Emily, could you come pick me up?” 

Emily didn’t know what had happened, but if Vanessa asked for help, she would not refuse. 

Without thinking too much about it, she agreed, “Okay. Send me the address.” 

After hanging up, Vanessa sent her a location. It was a bar. 

When Emily arrived and found Vanessa, she was with Derek 

and several of his friends.

After Emily pushed open the private room door and stepped inside, Vanessa stood up. She turned off the blaring music and shut off the constantly shifting, multicolored lights. 

Derek frowned as he looked over, his eyes filled with irritation and anger. “Vanessa, what are you doing now?” 

Just half an hour earlier, when Vanessa had reached the door of the private room, she had overheard the conversation inside. 

Someone asked, “Derek, you and Vanessa have been together for eight years now. When are you planning to get married?” 

“Married?” He laughed outright. “Her parents haven’t even come begging me to marry her. No visit, no call, nothing. If they want a wedding, they know what they’re supposed to do. I’m not the one who should be asking. They are.” 

His voice turned lazy, openly contemptuous. “Until her family comes to me, I’ll act like marriage isn’t even on the table. Ring or no ring doesn’t change a thing. She’ll stay. She always does. Why wouldn’t she?” 

He shrugged, completely at ease. “Maybe one day I’ll decide to marry her. If that happens, she should count herself lucky. And if I don’t, I’ll marry someone younger, obedient, and untouched instead. Either way, I don’t lose.” 

The room erupted in laughter, followed by flattering 2/6

Standing outside the door, Vanessa bit her lip so hard it nearly broke the skin, yet she forced herself not to let a single tear fall. 

After a long while, she knocked on the door and walked in. 

Looking at the smiling faces inside, she felt nothing but disgust. 

Vanessa swallowed her anger and quietly took a seat in the 

corner. 

Derek ignored her the entire time. She didn’t call out to him either. Instead, she sent a message to Emily. 

She thought that perhaps it was time for everything to end. 

Having Emily come was simply to serve as a final witness. 

Sensing that the atmosphere in the room was off, Emily silently moved closer to Vanessa. 

Vanessa’s act of turning off the music and lights completely infuriated Derek, and he lost his temper on the spot. 

The entire room fell silent at once. 

Vanessa stood there, her gaze on Derek, calm and detached.

The friend beside him still tried to reason with him. “That’s harsh, man.” 

Derek lifted his glass and laughed loudly, “Harsh or not, it’s how it is. Drink up. She’ll be back soon enough.” 

The music was deafening, yet that sentence still cut through the beat. Even though Emily and Vanessa were already some distance away, they heard it clearly.
