Chapter 145 A Rather Unpleasant Morning 

The next day was Monday. 

When Emily woke up, a light rain was falling outside. She put on a coat, took an umbrella, and left Carter Manor. 

Before seven o’clock, she had already arrived at Joy Gardens. 

Ethan had only said that she didn’t need to stay at Joy Gardens, but he had never said she wasn’t allowed to come back to cook for Sophia. 

Besides, Sophia hadn’t fully recovered yet, so Emily planned to come by for a couple more days. 

In the kitchen, she fried eggs, toasted some bread, and warmed up a bit of milk. Seeing that it was getting late, she prepared to go upstairs to wake Sophia. 

As she passed Ethan’s room, the door suddenly opened. 

Ethan was wearing gray pajamas. When he saw Emily, a flash of unmistakable surprise crossed his eyes. 

Emily also looked up at him. Over his shoulder, she saw the bedroom lights on, and the door to the adjoining bathroom haff open. Nancy, dressed in pale blue pajamas, was standing:37 

Once upon a time, that had been the place where she stood. Only back then, Ethan hadn’t been part of that scene. 

As if sensing Emily’s gaze, Ethan instinctively stepped forward, deliberately blocking her line of sight. 

When he spoke, there was a trace of irritation in his voice. “What are you doing here?” 

Emily fixed her gaze on him, her eyes cold. “I came to make breakfast for Sophie. Once her lymph nodes go down, I naturally won’t come anymore.” 

Ethan said, “Sophie is much better already.” 

Emily’s tone hardened. “I’m a doctor. I go by the clinical findings.” 

After that, she didn’t want to say another unnecessary word to him. She turned around and walked straight toward Sophia’s 

room. 

When she pushed the door open, Sophia was still asleep in bed. 

School was almost starting, so Emily called softly, “Sophie, it is time to get up for school.” 

Sophia rolled over and muttered in dissatisfaction, “Mommy, I want to sleep a little longer. Stop bothering me.”

Sophia pulled the blanket over her head. “Can I not take a day off? I took time off last week too.” 

Emily grew irritated and refused decisively. “No. Your stomach doesn’t hurt anymore, so you have to go to school. You need to develop good habits.” 

Sophia felt annoyed. To express her displeasure, she kicked the blanket hard twice before snapping, “I know already, Mommy. You are so long–winded.” 

At that, a sharp pain pierced Emily’s chest. She lifted her face to keep the tears from falling and then let out a quiet sigh. “I’m going to work. Have your dad take you.” 

With that, she stood up. 

Sophia gave an impatient “Mm” and said nothing more. 

Emily glanced back at the bed again and again as she walked away, imagining that Sophia would get up and tell her she was 

sorry. 

But she did not. Sophia did nothing at all. 

Hardening her heart, Emily left Sophia’s room. 

As she passed Ethan’s room, the door was ajar.

Rebecca quickly asked, “Are you not having breakfast?” 

“No. I’m running out of time,” Emily replied. 

She had already wasted too much time waiting for Sophia. 

She had come early that morning, but Sophia didn’t seem to 

need her at all. 

Thinking about it made her feel bitter. 

Just as Emily pulled into the hospital parking lot and parked her car, she heard someone calling her name.

“Emily.” It was Aaron’s voice.

Aaron smiled when he heard that. “Great. I’ll pick you up after 

work.” 

Emily was about to say it wasn’t necessary, but Aaron suddenly added, “There will be one more person coming too.” 

“Who is it?” Emily asked, curious. 

Aaron didn’t answer directly. Instead, he teased, “You will find out tonight.” 

Emily had been in a bad mood, but seeing him like this, 

she couldn’t help laughing softly, “Why are you being so

Aaron smiled and didn’t respond. 

When the elevator arrived, they walked in together. 

On the first floor, many more people got on. Aaron stepped in front of Emily, shielding her with his body. 

It was the morning rush, and the elevator was packed shoulder to shoulder. Emily was standing pressed almost against 

Aaron’s chest. 

As the elevator ascended, Emily could clearly hear Aaron’s heartbeat, fast and forceful, as if it were about to burst out of 

his chest. 

She quietly lifted her eyes and caught sight of his tense jaw. A visible flush crept across his face. 

When Aaron lowered his head, his gaze met Emily’s as she looked up at him. 

In that brief instant, Aaron’s heart skipped a beat.
