Fortunately, the elevator stopped at Emily’s department in time. She lowered her voice and reminded him, “Aaron, this is my floor.” 

“Oh, right,” Aaron said, hurriedly stepping aside to make room. 

At five thirty in the afternoon, Aaron came to Emily’s department. 

Emily hadn’t gotten off work yet. She was busy writing medical records when a patient’s family member called out, asking for a doctor to take a look. 

Without hesitation, Aaron casually grabbed a white coat and said, “I’ll check on the patient. You finish the chart.” 

With Aaron helping out, Emily only worked about ten extra minutes before everything was done. 

By the time they arrived at the restaurant Aaron had reserved, it was six thirty in the evening. 

Seeing that the other person hadn’t arrived yet, Aaron suggested, “Let’s wait in the main dining area.” 

From his careful manner, Emily guessed the person he mentioned must be someone of considerable stature_

When she looked toward the entrance, Emily recognized Oliver. 

He carried a briefcase and wore a tailored jacket. As the hostess stepped aside to let him through, he gave a polite nod and murmured his thanks.

Yet after stepping inside, Oliver didn’t glance at Aaron or Emily at all. Instead, under the server’s guidance, he headed straight toward a private room. 

As he passed their table, Aaron started to say, “Pro-,” but before he could finish, Oliver followed the server away. 

He didn’t acknowledge them at all, which left both Emily and Aaron puzzled. 

Their gazes followed Oliver. When the private room door opened, they saw Ethan, Andrew, and Nancy seated inside. 

Nancy was the one who opened the door. The moment she saw Oliver, she quickly lowered her head and addressed him respectfully. “Professor Jones.” 

Oliver merely responded with a brief “Mm” before stepping into the room.

Aaron noticed that although Emily was smiling, the expression didn’t quite reach her eyes. He couldn’t help saying, “Professor Jones often mentions you to me. He says it’s been a long time since he’s wanted to take on a student this badly. He’s been looking forward to the day you finish your master’s and apply for his doctoral program.” 

Emily nodded. “I’ll work hard.” 

“I believe you will,” Aaron said. 

Emily smiled faintly and didn’t add anything else. 

Aaron understood how she felt. Her husband was dining with another woman, and had even intercepted the person who was supposed to have dinner with them.

Oliver ignored her and sat down directly. 

At that point, Ethan signaled the server to refresh their drinks. 

At the same time, Oliver looked at Ethan and added, “By the way, I don’t have much time. Twenty minutes at most. If you have something to say, say it directly. I have other engagements, and it wouldn’t be appropriate to keep people waiting.”

Nancy raised her head and timidly met his eyes. “Professor Jones, I’ve reviewed a large body of literature, but I still haven’t identified a research topic that is both meaningful and feasible. I would appreciate it if you could offer some guidance.”
