Chapter 46Â
Kelvin glanced at his phone screen, a small smile tugging at his lips as he saw the notification. [You have successfully added Wina as a friend.]Â
The satisfaction he felt was no less than closing a multi–billion–dollar deal.Â
“Darius, I’ve already sent the bid documents to Miss Lennox,” Kelvin said.Â
Edwina quickly tapped on her phone, saved the file, and was just about to delete Kelvin from her contacts. His pitch–black profile picture was an eyesore.Â
Kelvin said casually, “Darius, I have a friend in the government. If any new investment policies come up, I’ll send them to Miss Lennox so she can pass the info to you.”Â
“That’s wonderful!” Darius nodded with approval, then said to Edwina, “Edwina, I’m counting on you for this.”Â
Edwina’s expression didn’t change, but a hint of impatience and coldness flickered in her eyes.Â
She just gave a noncommittal response.Â
This way, deleting Kelvin was out of the question.Â
After Kelvin left, Edwina went back to her bedroom. Her phone chimed. It was a message from Kelvin on WhatsApp. [Edwina, goodnight.]Â
Edwina scoffed.Â
She smirked, brushed off his attempt to be caring, muted his notifications, and thought, ‘Out of sight, out of mind.Â
She put away her finished design sketches, gazing out at the night that had turned completely dark.Â
Her mind drifted to Kelvin’s all–black profile picture, and she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of annoyance.Â
There were very few people in this world who could piss him off the way she did.Â
Edwina yanked the curtains shut, determined to shut out every trace of darkness.Â
Beside the Simmons villa was a communal dormitory for the household staff. Lanette had been relegated to washing dishes.Â
Since she was no longer Helene’s personal maid, she wasn’t entitled to a private room in the villa anymore.Â
Her belongings had already been moved out by Ivan’s people and left right at the dormitory entrance.Â
Lanette’s forehead was mottled with bruises, throbbing with pain.Â
The other servants kept sneaking glances at her, whispering among themselves. She felt deeply embarrassed by all theÂ
attention.Â
“That’s enough. Everyone, shut up and get back to work!” Helene showed up and chased off the nosy staff.Â
As soon as she saw Helene, Lanette broke down in tears again. “Miss Simmons, I’m sorry. I was too slow packing up, and ended up causing trouble for you.”Â
Normally, Helene would have lost her temper, but this time, she didn’t.Â
She never expected that, after everything, the one person who truly cared about her would be a maid she used to look downÂ
on the most.Â
Helene said softly, “Lanette, I know it’s tough for you to be here.Â
“Don’t worry. The Simmons family will be mine, and I promise I’ll get you back by my side.”Â
Lanette nodded. “I believe you, Miss Simmons. I’m still around, so if you need anything, just tell me. I can still help you.”Â
Helene slipped some money into Lanette’s hand, telling her to take care of her injuries.Â
She promised to talk to the kitchen manager and make sure Lanette got a few extra days off to rest before she had to go back to work.Â
Night had fallen completely. The cold wind sent a chill straight to Helene’s core.Â
This used to be her turf, the one place she could let loose and be herself.Â
Now, she was walking on eggshells, afraid to make a sound. It was all thanks to Edwina.Â
The sudden ring of her phone sliced through the quiet night. Helene quickly picked up.Â
“Miss Simmons,” a bitter, familiar voice that made Helene shiver involuntarily came from the other end.Â
She lowered her voice, extra tense. “It’s done. You screwed it up. Why are you calling me now?”Â
She’d just been under suspicion, and there was no way she could afford to stir up any more trouble at that moment.Â
Jacelyn Diaz sounded like a walking corpse. “Yeah, it’s over. I’ve got a criminal record now.Â
“I have to report to the police station every month for three years! I’ll never be able to work as a doctor again.Â
“Back then, I let you insult me and pretend we had nothing to do with each other, just so you wouldn’t forget our agreement, Miss Simmons.”Â
Helene frowned. “Don’t worry. I’ll send you the money right now. I’ll arrange for you to go abroad, and I’ll cover your parents‘ nursing home fees too.Â
“Just don’t call me again. This is between you and me. If you breathe a word of this to anyone, we’re both finished!”Â
Helene hung up immediately, her heart pounding. She glanced around nervously, making sure no one had overheard before heading back to her bedroom.Â
She was the one who pushed Jacelyn to set Edwina up with drugs, just to make Kelvin turn against her. But Jacelyn screwed it up, unfortunately.Â
Helene figured that she’d better not make a move on Edwina for a while!Â
Peter had been parked outside the Simmons villa for what felt like forever.Â
With Kelvin still nowhere in sight, Peter’s nerves were shot. He thought, ‘What if the whole thing went sideways? Did a fight. break out in there?‘Â
Kelvin was a monster when it came to hand–to–hand combat, but even he couldn’t take on a whole house full of people by himself. He’d gone in there solo, after all.Â
Just as Peter was wondering if he should rush in, a Kelvin finally walked out.Â
Peter jumped out of the car and walked up quickly. “Mr. Gibson.”Â
Let’s head back,” Kelvin said.Â

Under the streetlights, Peter could’ve sworn he just saw Kelvin crack a smile, a real, genuine smile, with a hint of sweetness he’d never seen before.Â
‘What the hell is going on?‘ Peter wondered.Â
Peter started the car and headed back to Gibson Group. Kelvin still had an international conference to attend later that night.Â
Glancing in the rearview mirror, Peter saw Kelvin still smiling, the corners of his mouth lifted in a gentle, almost happy way.Â
He looked just like a guy who’d just fallen head over heels in love.Â
Peter was startled. He wondered, ‘Why the hell am I even thinking that?Â
“That’s Kelvin Gibson we’re talking about, the ruthless, decisive boss. Love is not even in his vocabulary. So maybe the whole breaking–off–the–engagement talk went off without a hitch?‘Â
Peter asked carefully, “Mr. Gibson, do you want me to let Mrs. Gibson know about calling off the engagement?”Â
Kelvin looked up, his eyes dark and impossible to read. “Who said I was calling off the engagement?”Â
“Wait, weren’t you here today to…” Peter was totally thrown off.Â
“I’m not backing out,” Kelvin said.Â
“Wait, so you’re really going to tie the knot with the Simmons family?” Peter blurted out.Â
“Yeah, having a marriage alliance with the Simmons family isn’t so bad,” Kelvin said with a shrug, almost sounding amused.Â
Actually, it was better than good. Just picturing Edwina by his side had Kelvin feeling thrilled to the core, happiness bubbling up inside him.Â
Peter hesitated, stumbling over his words. “So, you’re going to marry Helene?”Â
Helene wasn’t bad or anything, but Peter just felt she was way out of Kelvin’s league.Â
Kelvin just arched an eyebrow. “No.”Â
‘So he’s marrying other people from Simmons family instead of Helene? Seriously, what’s going on here?‘ Peter thought.Â
He swallowed nervously, voice shaky. “Is Mrs. Simmons having another girl?”Â
Kelvin’s hand paused in the back seat, his face instantly turning icy.Â
“Your bonus for this month is cancelled,” Kelvin said coldly.Â
The next day, Edwina personally dropped off the desiÂ
sketches to Oliver Porter.Â
Oliver was honestly surprised. He could hand in the work way ahead of schedule. He looked at Edwina, shaking his head with a grin. “Boss, you’re basically a rich heiress now.Â
“You could have all the money you want, but you’re still working this hard? That’s seriously motivating for us regular folks!”Â
“Send the money to this card,” Edwina said.Â
“Is this Tristian’s card?” Oliver asked.Â
“Yeah, last time he went out of his way to get a bunch of Lattice Weed to help me with the blood ruby. I can’t just let him pay for all that,” Edwina replied.Â

“Got it,” Oliver said.”Â
Edwina added, “If there’s more work, send it my way. I’m not taking any time off.”Â
“You got it, boss. With you hustling for Ash Wings, the rest of us are practically in tears!” Oliver teased.Â
