Emily looked at Alexander, couldn’t tell if he was being sincere or just acting on impulse. For a moment, she felt disoriented.

After a brief pause, she still chose to tell him plainly, “Alexander, I’m a woman who has been married and has

had a child.”

Maybe it sounded self–important. She simply didn’t want him to take her the wrong way.

Even if he had never meant anything by it, there were still things she felt she needed to say.

Alexander looked at her serious expression and shrugged indifferently before asking in return, “So? What does that change?”

Emily tried her best to avoid his gaze. She couldn’t read him, nor could she figure him out.

She only said, “I’m not a naive young girl anymore. Don’t play games with me.”

Alexander had too many women around him. Emily was well aware of that. How could someone like him possibly

be interested in her?

She bent down, picked up Aaron’s jacket, and was about to head for the bathroom, but as she passed Alexander, he suddenly grabbed her arm. “Emily,” he said, “I’ve never joked with you about anything I’ve said.”

This time, he didn’t call her babe. He called her by name, as if to make his words sound more serious.

A smile returned to Alexander’s face. He reached out and lightly touched the top of her head, his voice gentle. “Go to sleep. I’m leaving.”

Emily gave a soft “Mm” and said nothing more.

Seeing her detached reaction, Alexander couldn’t resist teasing her again, “Next time I walk into your bedroom, I hope it’s through the front door.”

As he finished speaking, he took advantage of her inattention to snatch Aaron’s jacket from her hands. He walked over to the window, where a rope hung down from above. The moment he grasped it, he climbed out through the window.

That evening, after getting off work, Emily drove to Joy Gardens.

When she arrived, Sophia was already packed. She had a backpack on her shoulders and was holding two small bags.

Emily didn’t ask what was inside the backpack or the bags.

Ethan carried the backpack and bags and helped Sophia into Emily’s car. Before closing the door, he reminded- Sophia, “When you’re here, listen to your mom. Your great–grandpa is getting old. Spend more time talking to him and playing with him.”
