Clutching Alexander’s sleeve, Emily peeked through every gap to keep an eye on where Ryan was. 

Not until she saw him get in the car did she try to pull away from Alexander’s arms. 

Quick as a flash, he caught her hand, pressing it against his chest muscles, and leaned down to stare at her flushed cheeks. “Babe, your body still smells as sweet as ever. Drives me crazy.” 

Emily swung her free hand at Alexander, but he caught it with ease. He lowered his head to lick her fingertips lightly. 

“Babe, your hands are soft, too,” he said, smiling mischievously. 

Unable to bear it any longer, Emily bit down hard on his chest. The second she heard his muffled groan, she pushed him away and ran back to the Carter Manor.

Emily didn’t know how long she’d sat there when her phone rang a message popped up.

Emily threw the phone aside, his smiling face stuck in her head, impossible to shake off. 

Unsurprisingly, she was late for work. Lucky for her, Shirley noticed her listlessness and didn’t scold her. 

That afternoon, Emily had just reached the parking lot after work when Ethan called. 

She didn’t want to answer, but he kept dialing. Eventually, she gave in. “Speak.” Her tone was clearly annoyed. 

Ethan’s voice, though, was even more urgent. “Sophie’s in the hospital.” 

Panic–stricken, Emily asked about the address and sped aff in her car.

She practically bolted into the emergency room and spotted Ethan slumped on a blue chair from afar. 

As she approached, Emily took in Ethan’s haggard state and blurted out, “What’s going on? Did Sophie’s stomach act up again?” 

Ethan lifted his head, his bloodshot eyes a clear sign of his distress. “Sophie got bitten by a wild bug during the school hike. The doctor just checked her out. Said it’s nothing serious, just mild poisoning. She’ll need a couple of days of IVs and some meds. She’ll be good.” 

“Thank goodness.” Emily let out a sigh of relief. 

Ethan had accompanied Sophia on a long–distance hiking event. After a whole day on the move, he was utterly spent. But Emily, standing beside him, looked even more fatigued. 

Unable to hold his tongue, Ethan turned to her and asked, “How’re you doing?” 

Emily, about to take her leave, gave him a quizzical look. “What do you mean?”

Ethan explained, “Is your cold any better? Still got a fever?” 

It dawned on Emily then, and she simply responded with a curt “Yeah.” 

Her lack of enthusiasm in that single word left Ethan scratching his head, wondering which question she was answering. 

He kept his eyes on Emily, and the unfamiliar sense of distance and coldness she exuded made his chest tighten. 

Sophia’s hospitalization was a major deal, yet Emily seemed eerily calm. 

As his eyes wandered down, he spotted a bracelet on her 

wrist. 

Ethan was pretty sure it was the one Alexander had snapped up at an auction. 

Just as he was about to ponder further, Nancy’s call broke his train of thought.

He picked up the phone, and Nancy’s worried voice came out. “Hey, Ethan, how’s Sophie?” 

“She’s fine. No need to come here. I’ll bring her home after the drip,” Ethan reassured her. 

Nancy let out a sigh of relief. “Okay then. I’ll whip up a nice meal with Rebecca. It’ll be waiting for you guys when you get back.” 

Ethan murmured an affirmative. When he looked up, he saw Emily watching him intently. 

After he ended the call, Emily said, “I’m gonna head back.” 

Ethan was taken aback. “Not going in to see Sophie?” 

“Got some stuff to take care of. You stay with her. I’ll pass,” Emily replied, then spun around and started walking towards the hospital exit. 

However, she only made it a couple of steps before she stopped dead in her tracks. 

Ethan frowned, confused by her sudden halt.

Emily walked back over to him, her eyes fixed on his. “The agreement at Brocade Estates, have you signed it yet?” 

The mention of the agreement jogged Ethan’s memory. He remembered Emily had given Jane something, but it hadn’t reached his hands yet. 

Ethan assumed it was some contract. 

After a brief pause, he replied, “I’ll find some time to head back and sign it in the next few days. And I’ll get someone to courier it to you asap.” 

Emily wasn’t fully convinced and gave him a gentle nudge. “Make it soon.” 

Ethan nodded. “Sure.” 

As Emily stepped out of the hospital, a gust of cold wind blew, sending a shiver down her spine. 

The thought of Ethan’s unhesitant attitude hit her like a ton of bricks. Even though she’d always known he wanted a divorce, his casual attitude still felt like a knife to the
