Chapter 160 She Never Would Have Said Yes

After a long stretch of silence, Ethan finally pulled out his phone and dialed Jane.

When she picked up, her voice carried a note of confusion. Mr. Wilson, are you coming home tonight?”

Ethan paused, suddenly rememberingit was the fifteenth, Emily’s ovulation day.

They’d been trying for a second child, timing things carefully for months on end, but somehow, somewhere along the line, the plan had just fizzled out without anyone saying a word.

Mr. Wilson?Jane prompted again.

Snapping back, Ethan cut straight to it. Did you manage to find the document Emily left with you?”

Jane sounded taken aback. Document?”

Ethan rubbed his temples, feeling a twinge of heplessness at her failing memory.

Jane had been with the family since he was a boy. Even though age had slowed her down, he’d never had the heart to let her gohe wanted her to spend her later years comfortably in their home.

Lately, though, she wasn’t as sharp as she used to be.

She’d been looking for that document for over a month and still hadn’t found it. For all he knew, she might have forgotten about it entirely.

But then, something clicked for her. Oh, right—Mrs. Wilson did give me some papers. I tucked them away somewhere safe, but heaven knows where. I haven’t been able to lay hands on them.”

Ethan didn’t scold her; he just asked patiently, Did you get a good look at what it was?”

Mr. Wilson, you know I don’t read so well these days. Couldn’t make heads or tails of it.”

He let out a weary sigh. Alright, I got it. I’ll swing by

tomorrow.”

With that, he ended the call.

Just then, Nancy’s voice echoed from the hall, Ethan, could you help me get Mom up?”

Ethan pocketed his phone, Emily’s words still nagging at the back of his mind. He didn’t truly believe she’d go through with a divorce, but a faint unease gnawed at him all the same.

For now, though, the priority was Gloria who’d taken a tumble in the living room.

Stepping back inside, he and Nancy carefully lifted Gloria from the floor and settled her onto the sofa.

Sophia was crouched nearby, gathering the scattered pieces of her Superman toy, tears streaming down her cheeks as she worked.

Gloria watched her with genuine remorse. Sophie, I’m so sorry. This is all my faultyour toy got broken because of me.”

Sophia wiped her eyes and looked up at her earnestly.

g, it wasn’t you, Granny Gloria. It was Mommy wh95:02

smashed it. This has nothing to do with you.”

Gloria softened. How about I buy you a new one, hmm?”

Sophia shook her head stubbornly. No, thank you. I only

loved that one.”

Gloria’s eyes brimmed with tears. She glanced up at Ethan. Ethan, maybe I should just go home. Staying hereI’m only causing trouble for everyone.”

Ethan pulled himself from his thoughts and met her gaze with a calm reassurance. Gloria, don’t blame yourself. What happened today wasn’t your fault.”

After returning to Carter Manor, Emily went straight to

the shower.

When she emerged, she checked her phonenothing from Ethan. Not a single text or call.

She wondered if her words had even registered with him, if he’d bother signing those papers at all.

But one thing was certain: she couldn’t let this divorce

drag

on any longer.

If today yielded nothing, she’d push him tomorrow. If he was too busy then, she’d track him down the day after.

She’d bug him every day until it was finalized.

The next morning, Emily rang him several times, but he let it go to voicemail.

She had to rush off to work, so she stopped trying.

At noon, she called againhis phone was powered off.

That evening, she tried once more. This time he answered, but the background was a chaotic roar of laughter and clinking glasses. She could tell he was out with Andrew, Shawn, and the usual crew.

Ma

Since he’d picked up, she dove right in. Have you signed yet?”

It was too loud on his end; he cupped the phone and shouted, Hey, it’s crazy here. I’ll call you back in a bit.”

Emily wanted to say more, but the line went dead.

Staring at the ended call, Emily let out a frustrated sigh.

Back when they’d gotten married, Matthew had practically dragged Ethan to the registry office.

The ceremony had taken mere minutes. But divorce? It felt like an endless maze of paperwork and waiting.

If she’d known it would trap her like this, she never would have said yes.

Predictably, she fell asleep waiting, and Ethan never

called back.

The following day was Friday, one of Emily’s comp days off. First thing in the morning, she texted him about the papers. Still, there was no reply.

With grad school entrance exams looming, she couldn’t afford distractions. She grabbed her books and headed to the library.

On the way, her phone lit up. For a split second, she hoped it was Ethanbut no, it was Melissa.

Emily went to the restroom to answer the call. Melissa5:02

bubbled with excitement, Emily! Tomorrow’s your birthdaycome up to Berkeley and celebrate with me!”

Thanks, Melissa, but I’ve got grad school entrance exams to prep for and this whole divorce mess. I’m gonna pass this time.”

Melissa let out a delighted squeal at the news. You’re serious? Divorce and grad school?”

Yeah,Emily replied, a quiet resolve in her voice. It’s time I started living for myself.”

Melissa’s joy was palpable. God, yesfinally! You’re way too talented to be chained to everyday drudgery, let alone wasting your heart on family ties or love that doesn’t deserve you.”
