After a long stretch of silence, Ethan finally pulled out his phone and dialed Jane. 

When she picked up, her voice carried a note of confusion. “Mr. Wilson, are you coming home tonight?” 

Ethan paused, suddenly remembering–it was the fifteenth, Emily’s ovulation day. 

They’d been trying for a second child, timing things carefully for months on end, but somehow, somewhere along the line, the plan had just fizzled out without anyone saying a word. 

“Mr. Wilson?” Jane prompted again. 

Snapping back, Ethan cut straight to it. “Did you manage to find the document Emily left with you?” 

Jane sounded taken aback. “Document?” 

Ethan rubbed his temples, feeling a twinge of heplessness at her failing memory.

Stepping back inside, he and Nancy carefully lifted Gloria from the floor and settled her onto the sofa.

Gloria watched her with genuine remorse. “Sophie, I’m so sorry. This is all my fault–your toy got broken because of me.”
