After dinner, the staff cleared the table and cleaned everything

Ethan asked them to place the cake on the table. After the candles were lit, the lights were turned off. 

Sitting at the head of the table, Matthew ordered Tyrone, who was slouched in a corner, “Tyrone, get up and sing Happy Birthday for Emily.” 

Tyrone was playing on his phone. Without even looking up, he said sarcastically, “Grandpa, Emily isn’t a kid. What’s the point of singing a birthday song?” 

Matthew immediately grew annoyed. “Fine, then I’ll sing it myself.” 

As soon as he said that, Matthew cleared his throat, ready to begin. 

Julian and Emma seemed to have had an argument. They ignored each other completely, and Matthew didn’t call on either of them.

Ethan sat beside Emily, his head lowered as he tapped away at his phone, fingers moving quickly across the screen. He was clearly sending messages. 

As for who he was messaging, Emily didn’t know. But she had a good guess. It was probably Nancy. 

After turning Matthew down, Tyrone went right back to his phone. 

At the entire table, Matthew was the only one who genuinely wanted to wish her a happy birthday. 

Emily felt her eyes grow warm. 

Every person sitting there was someone she had once tried so hard to please. 

And yet, aside from Matthew, no one had ever truly valued what she had given. 

Seeing how awkward Matthew looked, Emily spoke gently, “I know how you feel. There’s no need to sing the birthday song. When it’s your birthday, I’ll sing for you.” 

Matthew’s eyes reddened at her words. He lowered his head and said hoarsely, “Then let’s cut the cake.” 

Emily knew he felt sorry for her, but she smiled indifferently, 2/5

After cutting the cake, Emily handed the first piece to Matthew. 

Matthew took it and ate slowly. 

Emily glanced at the others. Everyone was busy with their own things, paying no attention to her birthday at all. 

After giving Matthew his slice, she cut one for herself and didn’t cut any for the rest. 

As she sat down to eat, Ethan put away his phone and turned to her. Lowering his voice, he said, “Happy birthday.” 

The cake tasted sweet, but her heart felt bitter. Emily forced a polite smile and replied, “Thank you.” 

Matthew was not fond of overly sweet desserts, but afraid of upsetting Emily, he finished the cake anyway. 

After setting down his utensils, Matthew looked at her and said, “Emily, come with me. I need to talk to you.” 

Emily didn’t know what he wanted to say, but she stood up and replied, “Okay.” 

She supported Matthew as they returned to his bedroom. The

Emily had thought he would ask about her and Ethan. 

But instead, Matthew said, “Lydia had a fight with her mother. Go talk to her. She listens to you.” 

Emily looked confused. “What happened between them?” 

Matthew explained patiently, “Lydia may be studying medicine, but she’s still a daughter of the Wilson family. Her mother doesn’t think medicine should be her only path. She wants her to start looking for someone to marry early. 

“You studied medicine too. Go talk to her. Tell her how hard it really is, how exhausting and demanding it can be.” 

Hearing that, Emily instinctively refused. “I don’t think I can convince Lydia. She might not listen to me.” 

Still uneasy, Matthew insisted, “Whether it works or not, you won’t know until you try. Just consider it a favor to me.” 

Emily could not bring herself to turn him down. After a moment, she nodded. “I’ll try my best.” 

“She’s at a cocktail party right now,” Matthew said. “Go find her and talk to her properly.”
