Because I Was an and He Threw Away 176

At Wilson Manor, just as dawn was breaking, Emily heard the sound of an argument coming from downstairs.

After getting up and getting washed, she opened her bedroom door and called a maid inside.

What’s going on downstairs?”

The maid stood in the room with her head lowered and replied, It’s Ms. Lydia Wilson and Mrs. Emma Wilson. They’re arguing.”

Emily frowned and asked, Lydia is here?”

Yes,the maid said. She came last night.”

Emily continued, Where’s Matthew?”

If Matthew were around, Emma would not be acting so unrestrained.

The maid replied, Sir Wilson went out for a morning walk early.”

Emily understood immediately. Emma was taking advantage of Matthew’s absence to throw her weight around at Wilson Manor.

Still, none of this was worth Emily’s concern.

After getting herself ready, she went downstairs.

When she reached the lower floor, Emma was sitting on the sofa in a fury, her expression dark and unpleasant.

Hearing footsteps, Emma lifted her head slightly. When she saw that it was Emily, her expression worsened even further.

Emily didn’t acknowledge her at all and headed straight for the exit of the main hall.

She had work to get to and no time to worry about other people.

Especially not a socalled family who had never appreciated her efforts in the first place.

Seeing that Emily ignored her, Emma grew even angrier and suddenly barked, Stop right there.”

Emily acted as if she hadn’t heard and continued walking.

Just as she was about to step out of the hall, a tall, solid figure blocked her path and forced her back.

The figure emerged from the shadows. Emily gradually saw his

face. It was Tyrone.

He forced Emily back into the hall and demanded in a low voice, What did you say to Lydia?”

Emily looked at him and replied coldly, That’s none of your business.”

Tyrone’s temper flared, and his tone turned hostile. Lydia is a Wilson. She’s not like you. She has a bright future ahead of her. If you want to slave away as an overworked doctor, go ahead, but Lydia can’t afford to.”

Emily looked at Tyrone’s angry face and said calmly, I can’t control anyone’s life. Neither can you.”

With that, she walked around Tyrone and headed toward the

exit.

Watching herno longer meek and submissiveTyrone felt confused.

The woman who had once revolved her entire life around their family now dared to speak to him like this.

The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. Turning his head, he saw Emily about to step outside. Instinctively, he stuck out his leg to trip her up.

Emily didn’t notice Tyrone’s petty move. She stumbled forward.

Just outside the hall were the stairs. She staggered two steps and fell straight down them, her entire right arm scraping hard against the pebblestrewn ground.

Emily curled up in pain, her brows furrowed, her face contorted with agony.

Meanwhile, the culprit stood at the top of the stairs, looking down at her from above, dominating the scene.

Emma also walked out of the hall and stood beside Tyrone. Dressed in custommade couture, elegant and imposing, she looked down at Emily lying on the ground with eyes full of

contempt.

You’d better remember your place, she said calmly, her tone carrying an unquestionable pressure. In front of the Wilson family, you will never be qualified to hold your head up. What happened today is simply a reminder of where you belong.”

After speaking, Emma didn’t forget to kick the book Emily had dropped on the steps.

The book fell beside Emily’s feet, smeared with dirt.

Tyrone raised an arm and draped it over Emma’s shoulder, 4/6

letting out a cold laugh as he looked down from above. Mom, why waste your emotions on her? To us, she barely even exists.”

Emma patted Tyrone’s hand and said, Exactly. If she hadn’t gotten pregnant with Ethan’s child, she wouldn’t even be qualified to work as a maid for our family.”

The two of them laughed loudly, without the slightest restraint.

Emily lay on the ground, her arm scraped raw, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the sting of their words.

For years, she had worked diligently, treated Emma with respect, and, out of regard for Ethan, treated Tyrone like a real brother.

Whatever Tyrone liked to eat, she would go out of her way to make.

Even dishes she didn’t know how to cook, she would secretly ask the chef for lessons and learn them herself.

Yet in their eyes, she had never been family, not even someone worth treating seriously.

She held the title of Ethan’s wife, but did the work of a servant.

The Emily of the past had taken pride in all of it. She would not

anymore.

Emily forced herself upright and moved her arm. Realizing it wasn’t broken, she picked up the book lying near her feet. It was her exam prep book.

After brushing off the dirt, she carefully put it away.

Looking at Emma and Tyrone standing high above her on the steps, Emily couldn’t help but laugh.

The sound carried mockery, sarcasm, and utter disregard.
