Chapter 177 Talking BackÂ
When Emma heard Emily laughing, her expression darkened immediately. She snapped, “What are you laughing at?”Â
Emily looked at her calmly and said, “The two sons you took so much pride in are just like this. One took no responsibility for his relationships, and the other could not even tell right from wrong. Yet you still treated them as your greatest achievement. That says it all. No matter how successful they may become in the future, they mean nothing to me from this moment on.”Â
After speaking, she turned her gaze to Tyrone, her eyes so cold they seemed devoid of warmth. “Hitting a woman?” she said evenly. “What kind of man does that make you? A weak man, if you ask me.”Â
The short sentence cut deep. Tyrone’s expression twisted instantly.Â
“How dare you judge me like that?” he roared. “You’re asking for it.”Â
What he could never tolerate wasn’t criticism itself, but being denied as a man.Â
He could hold back his anger if it came from someone else, but coming from Emily, it was an absolute humiliation. In his eyes, she had no right to stand so upright, much less to spot to himÂ
in that tone.Â
After saying her piece, Emily paid no attention to Tyrone’s shouting, nor did she care about the way Emma looked as if she wanted to tear her apart.Â
She still had to go to work. She couldn’t afford to waste her energy on people and matters that weren’t worth it.Â
Worried that Tyrone might cause a scene and draw Matthew’s attention, Emma stopped him from going after Emily. “I’m here,” she said quietly. “Leave it to me.”Â
Tyrone’s jaw tightened. “And what about the last time she hit me?”Â
Emma’s expression didn’t change. “I haven’t forgotten.”Â
*****Â
After arriving at the hospital, Emily asked a colleague from her department to help treat her wound.Â
The skin on her arm was scraped, so her colleague disinfected it and applied a simple dressing.Â
It wasn’t serious, but it still affected her work progress.Â
That evening, because she had medical records to finish, she 2/6Â
stayed an extra hour before leaving the hospital.Â
By then, it was already past seven. Emily didn’t dare go back to Carter Manor–she was afraid her family would worry, and even more afraid that Ryan might act on impulse.Â
The Carter family and the Wilson family weren’t on the same level. If the Wilson family were truly offended, the Carter family would gain nothing from it.Â
For her family’s safety, Emily chose to endure it in silence.Â
She lied to Ryan, saying that she was studying at the library and would be home late, telling them not to wait for her toÂ
have dinner.Â
Ryan knew she was preparing for the grad school entrance exam, so he didn’t doubt her excuse.Â
After work, Emily wandered along the street.Â
She had no destination.Â
Without realizing it, she stopped in front of an upscale café.Â
Through the large glass windows, she saw Ethan, Sophia, and Nancy inside.Â
Ethan was sitting alone at a table, typing on his laptop, 3/6Â
17:47Â
apparently busy with work. Across from him, Sophia was sitting face–to–face with Nancy on a sofa. The two of them seemed to be playing some sort of game, laughing and chatting, occasionally leaning in to kiss each other.Â
From time to time, Ethan would look up at them, his eyes filled with warmth.Â
Emily stood on the crowded street, her right arm hanging stiffly at her side. She couldn’t move it at all.Â
The warmth inside the café, in contrast to her own disheveled state, filled her with nothing but bitterness and sorrow.Â
After a moment’s thought, she took out her phone and struggled to type with her left hand.Â
Emily: [Have you finished the divorce agreement?]Â
After sending the message, Emily looked back into the café.Â
Ethan didn’t check his phone, nor did he look at his computer. His attention was entirely on Sophia and Nancy. His gaze was gentle, and the smile at the corner of his mouth was deep and sincere.Â
At that moment, they truly looked like a family of three.Â
Ethan didn’t reply for a long time. Emily lost her patience and 4/6Â
decided to go to Brocade Estates to retrieve the divorce agreement she had drafted.Â
Since they were divorcing anyway, the agreement she had written herself should make no difference.Â
When she arrived at Brocade Estates by taxi, Jane was surprised to see her and exclaimed, “Ma’am? What happened?”Â
Emily didn’t waste a word and went straight to the point. “Jane, the document I gave you before. Where did you put it?”Â
Hearing this, Jane hurriedly replied, “Mr. Wilson asked about that agreement a couple of days ago too. I’m getting old, my memory isn’t good, and I’m always misplacing things. When you gave it to me, I accidentally put it somewhere and couldn’t find it. But Mr. Wilson told me to look for it again, and I’ve already found it. I’ll go get it for you now.”Â
Only then did Emily understand why Ethan had never signedÂ
- it.Â
If Jane hadn’t been so forgetful, they probably would have completed the divorce procedures long ago.Â
Before long, Jane brought out the agreement. The folder was already coated with a layer of dust.Â
Jane said apologetically, “Mr. Wilson kept asking me to deliver 5/6Â
it, but I always forgot, so I never did.”Â
Emily took the document and said, “Jane, I’ll deliver it myself.”Â
