Alexander wore an arrogant look, his gaze lowered as he looked down at Penelope, watching her humiliation and pain coldly. 

The harder she cried, the deeper the curve of his smile became. 

A low stir rippled through the crowd, whispers rising one after another. 

“What’s wrong with Mr. Lessing today? Isn’t he usually so graceful? Even if that woman really offended him, this feels excessive.” 

“And the Harrington family only runs a chain of restaurants. They’re not even in his circle.” 

“Exactly. He doesn’t look like himself at all tonight.” 

The murmurs continued, but Alexander ignored them completely. He finished wiping his hands at an unhurried pace and then flicked the handkerchief aside. It landed 

quarely on Penelope’s face.

“Ms. Harrington, women who provoke this level of disgust in me,” he said evenly, “you’re the third.” 

With that, Alexander turned away. His cold expression caused the people around him to instinctively part, clearing a path. 

Wild and arrogant, he could easily see over the crowd thanks to his height, his gaze finally settling on Ethan. 

Something complex flickered in his eyes, impossible to define. 

But Ethan, Andrew, and Shawn all caught that look. 

There was no mistaking the look in his eyes. It was cold, dismissive, and meant to ridicule. 

Andrew, sensing the hostility, asked in confusion, “Is he openly provoking us now?” 

Ethan held his wineglass, his voice lowered. “When has he ever stopped provoking?” 

Shawn straightened, his brow furrowing. “Something’s off–about Alexander tonight. He’s usually the best at pleasing women. Why would he deliberately offend one?”

Ethan lifted his glass and took a sip, his gaze suddenly shifting toward Emily in the distance.

The more indifferent she appeared, the more unsettled Ethan felt. 

Was this deliberate emotional distancing? Or had she anticipated this outcome from the start? 

Was that why, in the restroom, when he asked whether she had offended anyone, she answered the way she did? Because she knew Alexander would step in? 

Thoughts churned in Ethan’s mind, but he still answered Shawn. “Maybe,” he said, “someone already knows the answer.” 

Shawn followed Ethan’s gaze and saw Emily. He said nothing.

Andrew’s expression darkened. “Even if Alexander did this for her,” he scoffed, “it’s just a phase. Men like him don’t commit. When it’s over, she’ll realize she threw Ethan away for nothing.” 

Neither Ethan nor Shawn responded. But silence didn’t 

mean agreement. 

What if it wasn’t just a phase? 

On the other side of the room, Emily picked up several plates of food and handed them to Vanessa. Vanessa glanced at them and clicked her tongue softly. 

“Emily, you saw what just happened,” she said in a low but firm voice. “Men like Alexander are the kind you should stay as far away from as possible. All the stories about him talk about charm and romance.” 

She paused, her tone turning colder. “But when he actually decides to act, he shows women absolutely no mercy. If you ever run into someone like that, the only right choice is to avoid him.”

She was smiling, but her heart felt heavy.

The only explanation she could come up with was that she possessed some kind of value Alexander wanted.

Nancy’s shrill cry instantly silenced all the discussion about Alexander. 

Ethan, Andrew, and Shawn immediately rushed toward the back of the venue.

She scanned frantically as she ran, calling out in desperation, “Sophie, where are you? Please answer me.” 

She passed the playground. She passed the swimming pool. There was still no sign of Sophia. 

Panic overwhelmed her, tears and sweat streaming down together. 

Ethan arrived in the same area shortly after. When he saw Emily, he froze for a brief moment.
