“Have you found Sophie?” Emily looked at Ethan and asked urgently. 

Ethan was just as anxious. He shook his head. “Not yet.” 

Panic surged in Emily. She shouted hoarsely, “If anything happens to Sophie, I won’t let this go.” 

Her entire body trembled with rage, and her legs nearly gave out beneath her. 

Seeing her about to collapse, Ethan reached out to steady her. “Don’t worry. I’ve already sent people to look for her. She should be fine.” 

Emily struggled against his grip. When she couldn’t break free, she went slack and stood there, but tears kept spilling uncontrollably. 

She searched everywhere, desperate for that lively little figure to appear. 

But wherever her gaze landed, there was no sign of Sophia.

Then, from behind and to the side, came the sound of barking, followed by a child’s sobbing cry. “Mommy, Mommy, save me…” 

Emily recognized the voice instantly. It was Sophia.

Without thinking, she bolted toward the source of the sound. 

She didn’t know where the strength came from, but she was running even faster than Ethan. 

Pushing through the flowerbeds beside the pool, Emily saw Sophia running toward them, with a medium–sized dog chasing her and barking wildly. 

Ignoring the danger, Emily ran straight toward Sophia and the dog. As she ran, she called out, trying to calm her down. “Sophie, you’ll be fine. Come to Mommy. Mommy’s here. Mommy won’t let anything happen to you.” 

Sophia saw Emily and ran toward her, but the dog caught up and clamped down on her leg.

Emily used all her strength to choke the dog’s neck, but it refused to release its grip. 

Seeing blood beginning to flow from Sophia’s calf, Emily frantically struck the dog’s head. 

Finally, the dog let go of Sophia’s leg, but it turned and bit hard into Emily’s arm several times.

Her voice was shaking with fear.

But for reasons unknown, the dog refused to let go Emily’s arm.
