The situation was urgent on all fronts, but Sophia was 

still a child. She couldn’t handle trauma well. 

After hesitating, Ethan ultimately decided to take Sophia to the hospital first to get checked out and get her shots. 

As the group rushed away with Sophia, they ran into Vanessa, who had hurried over after hearing the 

commotion. 

Seeing them carrying Sophia and leaving in such a rush, Vanessa was momentarily confused. 

But as she moved forward, she saw Emily being bitten by a dog, with Shawn striking the animal nearby. 

Shawn wasn’t a violent person and couldn’t stomach blood. Even though the dog was viciously biting someone, he still hadn’t used full force to injure it. 

Vanessa, however, was different. When she saw Emily being bitten, she ran over and delivered a hard kick straight to the dog’s head.

Whether the dog was exhausted or finally in pain, it lost the strength to keep biting and collapsed onto the ground, tail hanging down, panting heavily with its mouth open. 

Vanessa reacted quickly, yanking Emily up, while Shawn also stepped in to help steady her. 

Shawn looked at Emily with concern and asked, “Are you 

okay?” 

Emily was completely dazed. She couldn’t even feel the pain in her arm. She numbly shook her head. “I’m fine.” 

Seeing her arm covered in blood and her face drained of color, Shawn couldn’t help suggesting, “Let me take you to the hospital.” 

Before Emily could respond, Vanessa shot Shawn an angry look and snapped, “Get lost. I have a car.” 

Vanessa knew Shawn was part of Ethan’s circle. She also guessed that Ethan and the others hadn’t bothered with Emily at all, which only fueled her anger.

Caught off guard by Vanessa’s hostility, Shawn was momentarily at a loss for words. 

Vanessa supported Emily and said bitterly, “They’re all jerks.” 

Emily felt as if her feet were floating. Every step she took felt weak and unsteady. 

Vanessa hurled a stream of curses, railing against Ethan and Nancy, but Emily barely registered any of it. 

She felt powerless, not because of the pain, but because she was dizzy at the sight of blood. 

It was almost laughable. She was a surgeon, yet she fainted at the sight of blood. 

Her condition wasn’t congenital. It was a lingering side 

effect from childbirth. 

Even so, Emily had still chosen medicine without hesitation. She believed she could overcome that psychological barrier. 

And she had, for the most part. But tonight, that familjar 

sense of fear had returned.

As Vanessa helped Emily out through the main doors of the venue, Emily finally couldn’t stay upright. Her body pitched forward. 

“Emily,” Vanessa cried out urgently. 

At the moment she fell, the pain she expected never came. In her haze, Emily sensed someone moving toward her. 

The scent was familiar, a faint mix of tobacco and cologne. 

She felt herself lifted into the air, cradled in someone’s arms. She also felt a burning gaze on her–intense enough to make her feel consumed. 

Then she felt motion. She was being carried. 

At the same time, a voice filled her ears, layered with emotions that tangled together. 

There was resentment, guilt, heartache, and restraint. 

“Why is it that every time you’re with him, you end up in such a mess? I was gone for less than an hour, and you were already hurt like this. If you had chosen to marry me

Vanessa was sitting by the bed. When she saw Emily wake up, relief flooded her face. “Thank God.” 

Emily parted her lips. Her voice was hoarse and low. “Yeah.” 

Vanessa gripped her hand, tears slipping out as she said, “Do you have any idea how badly you freaked me out?” 

Emily gently rubbed the back of Vanessa’s hand with her thumb. “I’m fine.”

Emily had already expected it would be Alexander.

After thinking for a moment, Emily asked, “Where is he now?” 

Vanessa peeled an apple as she replied, “After he brought you to the hospital and the doctor gave the diagnosis, he left. A woman came to pick him up.” 

Emily simply responded, “I see.” 

Vanessa handed her a small piece of the peeled apple. “I really didn’t expect this. I had just said that men like him were the kind you should stay away from, and then he helped us out.” 

Emily smiled faintly but said nothing more. 

Vanessa’s thoughts jumped quickly from one thing to another. After Alexander, she turned her anger pack to4:25 Ethan. “That bastard really is heartless,” she snapped.
