When Emily got back to Carter Manor, all the lights were still

She walked into the main hall and saw Ryan and Chloe sitting at the dining table. 

Both of them looked over when she came in. 

Emily walked toward them and greeted them. “Ryan. Chloe.” 

Ryan looked Emily over completely and then said, “Have a seat.” 

Emily sat down next to Chloe. 

Chloe looked at her with concern. “Did you eat dinner?” 

Emily nodded. “Yeah, I did.” 

That seemed to put Chloe’s mind at ease. “Molly cried for a long time tonight. She just wore herself out from crying, so I had one of the maids take her to bed.” 

Emily felt guilty but didn’t know what to say. 

Chloe reached under the table and held Emily’s cold fingers. “You worked hard today taking Molly out.”

Emily shook her head and smiled a little, “I wasn’t tired. I was really happy to spend time with Molly. It felt like a blessing.” 

Chloe patted the back of Emily’s hand. She didn’t say anything, but Emily knew that Chloe felt sorry for her. 

As a mother herself, Chloe understood the pain of not being liked by her own daughter. 

While they were talking, Ryan pulled out a bank card from somewhere and placed it on the table. She pushed it toward Emily. “Keep this card. If you can’t work out a good divorce settlement, then stop getting hung up on fighting over money. 

“The Wilson Family has money, but they might not give you much anyway. Instead of waiting around for their handouts, you should just let it go. After the divorce, Chloe and I will take care of you. You won’t have to worry about money.” 

Emily’s eyes went red the moment she heard that. She shook her head and refused. “Ryan, I make enough to support myself. I can’t take this card.” 

She hadn’t told her family the details about the divorce, so it made sense that Ryan would think they hadn’t finished the paperwork yet. 

To be fair, Ethan was being pretty generous about it. He had offered her a billion dollars as compensation.

When Emily tried to refuse, Chloe pressed the bank card into her hand anyway. “Don’t think it’s too little. This is just something from Ryan and me because we care about you.” 

Emily held the card and felt her nose sting. Tears spilled down

She still couldn’t bring herself to tell her family everything 

about the divorce. 

The whole thing had been dragging on for a while now. At this point, they just needed to take their marriage certificate to the courthouse to go through the procedures. 

This moment made her even more determined to tell Matthew 

the truth.

The next day at Joy Gardens, when Sophia woke up, no one was there with her. 

Ethan wasn’t there and Nancy wasn’t there either. 

The room was huge but it felt completely empty and silent. 

Sophia burst into tears right away and started calling out, “Daddy! Nancy!” 

Rebecca heard Sophia crying and rushed upstairs from the first

She came into the bedroom and picked Sophia up. 

Sophia buried her face in Rebecca’s shoulder and asked through her tears, “Rebecca, where’s my daddy and Nancy?” 

Rebecca explained gently, “Ms. Thompson had to go to the research lab at school, so she left early this morning. Your father took Gloria to the hospital for her follow–up appointment.” 

When Sophia heard this, her mood dropped even lower. 

She tried to hold back how upset she felt and leaned against 

Rebecca. 

But for some reason, she suddenly found herself missing Emily. 

If Emily were here, she definitely wouldn’t have left her home all alone like this. 

For as long as Sophia could remember, Emily had always been by her side. 

But now her mom wasn’t with her anymore either. 

Rebecca noticed that Sophia seemed unhappy, so she looked 4/6 down at her and asked with concern, “What’s wrong?”

Sophia shook her head. “Rebecca, I want to call Daddy.” 

She had just woken up and her hair was still a messy nest. She looked sleepy and out of it. 

Rebecca agreed to Sophia’s request and called Ethan for her. 

He picked up quickly, but the background noise was loud. He must have been at the hospital. 

Ethan called out to her from the other end. “Sophie.” 

Hearing her dad say her name, Sophia couldn’t hold it in anymore. Her eyes turned red instantly and tears started falling down her cheeks. She couldn’t stop herself from crying as she said, “Daddy, no one’s here with me.” 

Ethan’s heart twisted when he heard his daughter’s words, but all he could do was try to comfort her gently, “Sophie, be good. Daddy will come home as soon as he’s done here, okay?” 

Sophia asked tentatively, “Can you come home by ten o’clock?” 

It was only a little after eight right now. 

Ethan hesitated for a moment, but he decided to be honest with her. “Sophie, Daddy probably won’t be back until 

tonight.”

The hope in Sophia’s heart died out in that instant. She said reluctantly, “Okay then.” 

After she hung up the phone, Sophia started crying her heart 

out. 

“Rebecca, I want Mommy! Mommy would stay with me! Mommy wouldn’t leave me! Mommy… I want my mommy!” 

Sophia sobbed and hiccupped while Rebecca held her and paced back and forth around the room. 

It took half an hour to calm Sophia down, and she finally stopped crying when she got too tired to keep going.
