A soft “Tommy” escaped Emily’s lips, a quick acknowledgment. Then, turning to Alexander, she offered a polite greeting. “Mr. Lessing.” 

Alexander caught sight of Emily. This wasn’t a pre–arranged meeting; it was a genuine chance encounter. 

Still brooding over the afternoon’s events, his mood had been sour all along. And now, face–to–face with the one he held responsible, irritation welled up inside him. 

Without a word, he casually shifted his gaze aside. 

However, Tommy plopped himself down next to Emily. 

Oblivious to the afternoon’s event, he was still dead–set on giving Alexander a shot at some alone time with her. 

So, he bravely took the risk of Molly’s scolding and made himself comfortable. 

Alexander was about to call Tommy back, but it was already too late. The words died in his throat. 

“Come on, Mr. Lessing, join us,” Tommy urged, giving Alexander a little wave.

After jotting down the order, Emily flagged down the waiter. 

Meanwhile, instead of reaching for his wallet, Alexander just sat there, and it was Emily who took care of the bill. 

As they waited for the food, an uncomfortable hush fell over the table. It was as if the air itself was holding its breath. 

When the pizza and burgers finally arrived, Emily noticed Alexander hadn’t ordered anything for himself. 

Looking at him, she couldn’t help but think he seemed like a different person. 

Lately, he’d been as cold as ice towards her. 

Well, it made sense. His interest had waned, and Alexander was no longer the forward–acting guy he used to be.

Molly’s eyes lit up, and she eagerly agreed. 

With the kids off to play, only Emily and Alexander were left at the table. 

After finishing her burger, Emily took a few sips of her juice. 

Alexander sat there in silence, slumped back in his chair, lost in his own thoughts. His quietness made Emily a bit nervous.

Emily looked down and saw a tissue wrapped around his 4/5 finger, soaked through with blood.
