After getting the address, Emily shot a message back to Vanessa right away: [Copy that. You keep tabs on things for now. I’m heading over pronto.] 

In her hurry, she couldn’t care less about finishing drying her hair. She just threw on some clothes and dashed out. 

The drive took around twenty minutes. 

When Vanessa caught sight of Emily’s car pulling up, she scurried out of the restaurant to meet her. 

They made their way inside, and Vanessa motioned towards a private room. She informed, “Chloe’s in there.” 

Emily rapped on the door, and a gruff male voice from within 

called out, “No more orders.” 

Then came Andrew’s voice, laced with a sneaky edge. “Hugh, she’s plastered. Go on, take your pick. A night of passion’s not to be wasted.” 

The other guy responded nonchalantly, “Alrighty, I’ll scoop her up then.” 

Those words were all it took for Emily to piece together what was going down. Her temper flared, and she didn’t think twice5

The sudden commotion jolted everyone in the room. Heads whipped around towards the door, faces etched with shock and confusion. 

Stepping in, Emily spotted Chloe slumped over the table. A man standing close by was already reaching out to grab her. 

There were only two men in the room: Andrew and a stranger. 

The man about to grab Chloe scowled at Emily and barked, “What the hell do you think you’re doing? Looking for a fight?” 

Emily had come well–armed, a knife hidden on her. 

Her expression icy, she growled at the man, “Keep your hands 

off her.” 

The man sized her up, his eyes filled with a strange curiosity that made Emily’s skin crawl. 

Seeing Emily crashing the party, Andrew blew his top again. “Emily, you’re such a pain in the ass. Can’t you take a hint?” 

Emily paid no heed to Andrew’s insults. She swiped a plate off the table and spat, “Andrew, don’t get too smug. You got Chloe drunk and tried to pimp her out. You think you’ll get away with this?” 

Just then, Vanessa slipped into the room and stood beside 2/5

The color drained from Andrew and the other man’s faces. They exchanged a panicked look and got up to leave. 

As Andrew passed Emily, he shot her a venomous glare. The other man just smirked and said, “Interesting.” 

Once they were gone, Emily and Vanessa helped Chloe up and made their exit. 

As their car drove off into the night, Andrew and the other man 

lurked in the shadows. 

It was a crisp fall evening, and they each lit a cigarette. 

Andrew let out a mocking laugh. “Shame, you missed out on a good time tonight.” 

The man didn’t rise to the bait. Instead, his eyes were fixed on the direction where Emily’s car had disappeared. “Is that the girl who’s after my sister’s guy?” 

Andrew raised an eyebrow and simply replied, “Yeah.” 

The man was Hugh Thompson, Nancy’s older brother. 

In business, Andrew, out of his affection for Nancy, had lent 3/5 Hugh a hand.

As time went by, their relationship had grown quite chummy. 

At Andrew’s answer, Hugh’s eyes showed a hint of surprise. “Well, I didn’t expect her to have some guts. And not only that, she’s as good–looking as Chloe.” 

Andrew pondered for a moment before chiming in, “True, she’s a looker. But she’s got a screw loose. Just won’t divorce Ethan.” 

Hugh let out a chuckle. “Ethan’s one–in–a–million. Once you’ve got your claws in him, you’re not letting go easily.” 

After he said that, Hugh realized his words might apply to more than just Emily. 

He fell silent for a bit, then his face hardened. “But she messed up my plan tonight and is vying with my sister for a man. She’s asking for trouble.” 

After taking a couple of puffs on his cigarette, Andrew casually said, “Didn’t catch a word of what you just said, though.” 

His meaning was crystal clear; he was giving Hugh the green light to do as he pleased.
