True to expectations, a flicker of panic crossed Ethan’s face. When he finally opened his mouth, his voice came out raspy. “Grandpa, if you’re really itching to see Sophie, I’ll bring her over tomorrow. You’re still on the mend, so no leaving the hospital willy–nilly just yet.” 

While Matthew might’ve been oblivious to the subtext, Emily caught on right away. 

Sure, Ethan’s concern for Matthew’s health was genuine, but there was a bigger elephant in the room–he was terrified of his little secret getting out. 

Matthew wasn’t having it. His brows furrowed, and he barked, “What’s the deal? Can’t I head to Joy Gardens?” 

Ethan played it cool, shrugging slightly. “How about waiting till you’re discharged?” 

This answer only rubbed Matthew the wrong way. His face hardened, and he growled, “You’re getting sick of me or what?” 

“Not at all, Grandpa. Just worried about you,” Ethan quickly explained. 

Fed up with Ethan’s explanations. Matthew switched his attention to Emily. Softening his tone, he asked, “And you, Emily? You’re not keen on me going, either?” 

Emily wasn’t thrown off by the sudden question. Her eyes 17:01 remained steady as she met Matthew’s gaze, about to respond.

But right then, she felt a gentle tug on her sleeve. 

Ethan, trying to nudge her to back him up. 

After a split second of thought, Emily said, “Matthew, your health is the top priority. Joy Gardens will always be there for you when you’re ready.” 

Her words might’ve bailed Ethan out for the moment, but they also sowed the seeds of future trouble. 

With Emily’s say–so, Matthew had no choice but to give in. 

He huffed, “Fine, since Emily’s put it like that. I’ll sneak over later. And Ethan, if you don’t treat Emily right, you’ll face the 

music.” 

Ethan plastered on a smile. “Don’t you worry, Grandpa. You’re always welcome. I’ll treat Emily better than I treat myself, for 

sure.” 

But Emily knew better. She could tell how gritted–teeth that promise was. 

Matthew decided to let it go. He pushed himself up, leaning on his cane. “Let’s take a stroll,” he announced. 

Emily shot a glance at Ethan, who responded with a scathing glare. 

Clearly, he thought she’d said the wrong words,

of the ward. 

Once they reached the hospital’s backyard downstairs, they ran into Aaron, dressed in laid–back casuals. 

Aaron did a double–take when he saw Emily. 

But then his face lit up, and he said, “Emily?” 

That simple utterance made Matthew’s eyes narrow, his expression instantly turning frosty. 

Emily was just as surprised to see Aaron. 

After a brief moment of shock, she flashed a warm smile. “Aaron, what a coincidence! Wasn’t expecting this.” 

Aaron grinned back. “Yeah, funny thing. I was actually gonna call you.” 

Emily, still holding onto Matthew’s arm, was focused on Aaron and didn’t notice the warning in Matthew’s eyes. 

Meanwhile, Ethan took the opportunity to fish his phone out of his pocket. 

He started typing away, probably replying to a work–related message, at least in Matthew’s eyes.

asked him, “Aaron, did you come to me for something?” 

Aaron kept smiling and said, “Professor Jones is having a teaching event this weekend. Are you in?” 

Without hesitation, Emily agreed right away. “Yeah, sure,” she replied. 

Just as she finished speaking, before Aaron could say another word, Matthew suddenly broke in. “This gentleman looks very young. Are you married?” 

Ethan, who’d been busy replying to a text, quickly stuffed his phone into his pocket upon hearing Matthew’s voice. 

Noticing Ethan’s quick move, Emily guessed he was probably chatting with Nancy. 

Maybe they were pouring out their yearning for each other or discussing how Sophia was doing 

Aaron shifted his eyes from Emily to Matthew and simply said, “Not yet.” 

Hearing this, Matthew, with a kind expression, said, “Since you’re Emily’s friend, I can’t be a tightwad. How about I fix you up with someone? What do you think?” 

Without a moment’s thought, Aaron declined. “Thanks, but I’m good. I’ve already got my eye on someone.”

Emily figured that if Aaron married into the Pitts family, with his talent, his fortune would skyrocket. 

But before she could ponder more, Aaron spoke up again, “Thanks for the thought, but I’m set. Really don’t need it.” 

Matthew had assumed that dropping the Pitts family name would make Aaron change his tune. 

However, all he saw in Aaron’s eyes was unwavering resolve. 

Still not willing to let it go, Matthew hinted, “For young fellas, choosing the right path in life is way more important than just picking the right job.”
