Chapter 225 You’re Just Being SelfishÂ

Upon hearing the words, Aaron remained as unmoved as a statue. With a nonchalant shrug, he drawled, “Some things are never gonna be mine. Why bust my gut for them?”Â
Matthew, seeing Aaron so dead–set, heaved another sigh. “Kid, you’re still green behind the ears,” he chided.Â
Aaron shot back with a faint smile, “The road you’re peddling? It isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.”Â
Matthew just sneered in response, his lips curling in disdain.Â
Noticing Matthew’s sudden loss of enthusiasm, Ethan spoke up, “Grandpa, let’s go.”Â
Emily released Matthew’s arm. After watching Ethan lead the old man away, she turned to Aaron. “Aaron, don’t let what he said get to you. Just be you.”Â
Aaron was well aware that Matthew was trying to rub his nose in it and dangle the carrot of an easy path to success.Â
But in Aaron’s book, all that fame bought with bucks was just a bunch of hot air. And he sure as hell wasn’t the type to use a woman to get ahead.Â
So, he’d given a flat–out no.Â
After that brief run–in, Aaron could tell Matthew was tough7:01Â

After a moment’s pause, he asked Emily, “I thought you were filing for divorce?”Â
“Yeah, we’re in the cooling–off period,” Emily replied.Â
Aaron let out a sigh of relief. “The Wilsons are all merchants, and merchants are all driven by profit. Don’t count on that old man too much.”Â
Emily nodded. “I got it,” she said.Â
From the way Matthew had tried to tempt Aaron, she could tell he was no saint.Â
Maybe it was because she was his grandson’s wife that he hadn’t been too rough on her.Â
Matthew, who’d walked a good 10 feet or so, looked back when he realized Emily wasn’t with them.Â
As he saw her still chatting with Aaron, his face clouded over. “Emily, what are you waiting for?” he bellowed.Â
“Coming,” Emily called back.Â
Then, she looked at Aaron again. “Once the divorce is done, I’ll steer clear of the Wilsons, even Sir Wilson.”Â
Hearing that, Aaron felt better. “I’ll all work out. You go on,” he said.Â
Emily nodded and took off. 2/4Â

After catching up with Ethan and Matthew, she clammed up.Â
Matthew didn’t pry, either. He just wandered around the backyard. When he got pooped, he plopped down in the gazebo.Â
After about half an hour of moseying around, Matthew said it was time to rest.Â
In the tight elevator on the way up, Emily caught a glimpse of Matthew’s reflection on the wall. His face was stone–cold, and his voice dripped with irritation. “Emily, what’s the relationship with you and that guy?” he demanded.Â
Ethan, standing nearby, glanced at Emily, ready to jump in and help, but Emily didn’t give him the chance.Â
“Aaron’s my college senior. We’re good friends,” she explained straight up.Â
Matthew nodded in understanding. Then he started sharing, “My wife was a really smart and talented woman. Before she married me, she was into writing. She had loads of physical books published, and there were tons of folks who read her work and admired her.Â
“But after she tied the knot with me, she quit writing. And as for male friends, well, she didn’t have any.”Â
As he talked about his wife, Matthew’s face softened with a gentle smile and a touch of pride.Â
Emily immediately got what he was driving at. 3/4Â

But Emily thought his point was off–base. Instead of calling him out directly, she said, “She was amazing. She sacrificed her own pursuits for love.”Â
Matthew quickly shot back, “It wasn’t really a sacrifice. I made sure she had everything she needed. And let’s face it, she wasn’t making much from her writing anyway.”Â
Hearing him dismiss his wife like that, Emily felt a twinge of sadness. “Maybe what she really wanted wasn’t money at all,” she murmured.Â
That got Matthew thinking.Â
Just as the elevator doors slid open, he huffed, “Forget it. I can’t get through to you young folks!”Â
As Emily stepped out of the elevator, she watched Matthew’s retreating back and whispered, “It’s not that you can’t explain. You’re just being selfish.”Â
Matthew was too far away to hear, but Ethan caught every word.Â
Instead of confronting her right then, he just stored it in hisÂ
memory.Â
