Upon returning to the hospital room, Matthew quickly washed up and then lay down to catch some rest. 

There was a spare cot in there, more than big enough for Emily and Ethan to share a snooze. 

Yet, the mere idea of sharing a bed with Ethan made Emily cringe. 

But in the end, she found herself lying beside him. 

Once Matthew’s breathing turned steady and rhythmic, signaling he’d dozed off, Ethan shifted his position. He slid an arm around Emily’s waist and pulled her snugly into his warm 

embrace. 

Emily’s cool back met Ethan’s toasty chest. 

In that contrast of temperatures, Ethan nuzzled close to Emily’s ear and murmured, “You think Grandpa was wrong?” 

Emily was caught off guard. “Ethan, I’m beat. I just wanna sleep,” she mumbled. 

Ethan pretended not to hear and continued, “Matthew loved his wife. He treated her really well.” 

Hearing this, Emily cracked open an eye and shot Ethan a look. “Love isn’t about locking someone up or making them change,” she–hissed softly.

Emily was stumped for a moment. After a bit of thought, she started. “It’s like how you treat Nan…” 

Just then, Matthew popped his eyes open. “Ethan, I nearly 

forgot. There’s Harvey Pitts‘ birthday bash this weekend. You two should go for me,” he said. 

Ethan thought for a second and asked, “Which day, exactly?” 

“Saturday night,” Matthew replied. 

“Got it,” Ethan said. 

Before long, Matthew was out like a light again. 

Once he was in a deep slumber, Ethan asked Emily, “What were you gonna say?” 

But sleep was getting the better of Emily, and she just kept quiet. 

When Emily woke up the next morning, Ethan was gone. 

Matthew was still catching some Zs, and the maid had already brought in breakfast. 

Realizing she had work, Emily told the maid to stay with Matthew and then left the hospital. 

That evening, Ethan didn’t come to pick up Emily, and she 

didn’t feel like going back to the hospital to be with Matthew. So she headed back to the Carter Manor.

As soon as she stepped inside, Molly came bounding out of the living room like a hyper little squirrel and clung to her. 

“Aunt Emily, I’ve missed you so much! It’s been two days,” Molly whined. 

Emily scooped her up and kissed her chubby cheek. “I missed you, too, sweet pea.” 

Poking Emily’s face with her finger, Molly asked, “Aunt Emily, our school’s having a fall outing next week. Will you come with me?” 

“Fall outing?” Emily was confused. 

It was early winter. Wasn’t that a bit late? 

But Molly just nodded eagerly. “Yeah, that’s what the teacher said.” 

Recalling her work schedule, Emily told Molly, “Honey, I’m on duty that day. How about having your mom and dad accompany you?” 

“Mommy said she’d go with me, but Daddy can’t. So, I really want you to come with me, Aunt Emily.” Molly frowned slightly. 

Emily sighed softly, a bit caught in a bind, but then gave in. “Alright, I’ll try to switch shifts. If it works, I’ll definitely be there with you,” she assured the little girl. 

Molly’s face instantly lit up like a Christmas tree. She jumped up and down, waving her hands in sheer exc”ement.

The next day was Saturday, and Imily indulged in a well–deserved lie–in. 

When she finally woke up, it was already past ten in the morning. 

Just then, her phone rang, and it was Ethan.

“I’m on my way to pick you up. We’ve got a styling appointment this afternoon,” he said over the phone. 

Ethan arrived before noon. After getting Emily on board, they drove straight to the makeup studio. 

Once they arrived, Ethan informed Emily, “I have to swing by the office. I’ll come back for you later.” 

Without a word of inquiry, Emily simply nodded and replied, “Okay.” 

Throughout the afternoon, Emily underwent a complete transformation. 

The stylist carefully selected a stunning black evening dress for her. Her hair was elegantly pulled into a low chignon, with a couple of loose strands framing her face, accentuating her delicate features. 

The makeup artist added the finishing touches with some tasteful jewelry and earrings, making Emily look even more refined and graceful.
