With her head down, Emily continued peeling the hazelnut. Without even sparing a glance at Alexander, she replied, “Not unhappy. There’s just nothing to get excited about.” 

Noticing her low–key mood, Alexander couldn’t resist asking, “Come on, tell me. What do you like?” 

The hazelnut seemed a tough nut to crack, probably not fully roasted. 

Giving up on it, Emily plopped it onto the table. 

Lifting her head, she looked straight into Alexander’s eyes and said earnestly, “I’m into a plain and simple life.” 

Alexander was caught off guard by such a humble wish. He quickly assured her, “I can make that happen for you.” 

Emily gave a faint smile and quipped, “In the high society like yours, how many can lead a simple life? You’re no exception.” 

Alexander looked down at his own hands and then held them up in front of Emily. “Look, these hands can either rake in the big bucks or grow tulips in the backyard for you,” he said seriously. 

Emily stared at his hands. They were long, with well–defined knuckles. 

For a moment, she was in a daze, but then Emily snapped out of it and smiled, “Like apples and oranges, we belong to different 03 

worlds.”

Alexander got desperate. He was about to say he could ditch his status, but just then, a voice called out from behind, “Alex!” 

It was a woman’s voice. 

Alexander took a deep breath, composed himself, and then turned around. Emily also shifted her gaze to the approaching girl. 

She recognized the girl. 

It was the same one who had accompanied Alexander to a fancy party last time. 

And in the car, she’d seen Alexander put his hand on the girl’s thigh. 

Remembering that scene, Emily lowered her eyes and pressed her lips together. 

It was obvious to her that a guy like Alexander could never truly settle for an ordinary life. 

When he saw it was Megan, Alexander quickly reined in his 

temper. 

Megan twirled around in front of him and asked playfully, “How do I look?” 

Alexander took a quick look and nodded. “Yeah, you look amazing.”

Spotting Emily had put about two feet of distance between them, Alexander scowled. Without a word, he stooped down, seized the edge of her chair, and smoothly pulled her back close. 

Emily had braced herself, gearing up to hold her ground, yet Alexander effortlessly yanked her right back into place. 

Megan, piqued by the commotion, craned her neck. The moment she caught sight of Emily’s face, the cheery grin that had been on her lips faded like a dying star. 

Her mind drifted back to a day at a crossroads. She and Alexander were en route to a swanky dinner event. 

At the traffic lights, a guy hopped into a car, and it was clear there was a heated spat going on inside. Even when the light turned green, the car just sat there, engine idling. 

Rather than zooming off, Alexander unbuckled his seatbelt, Stepped out of the car, and quickly sent the guy packing.

After that little scuffle, he leaned in towards the driver’s window 

and had a few words. 

From the passenger seat, Megan couldn’t catch what was said, but when Alexander slid back into the car, his eyes were all red–rimmed. 

Out of sheer curiosity, Megan stole a glance at the driver. 

It was a woman, not drop–dead gorgeous but definitely easy on the eyes. 

At the time, Megan just assumed Alexander had gotten into a tussle and his red eyes were from the scuffle. 

But then, that night in the car, with a box of tissues sitting beside her legs, she saw Alexander grab one and dab at his eyes. 

Now, as Megan took in Emily’s features, it clicked for her. Maybe Alexander hadn’t been in a fight that day; maybe he’d actually shed tears. 

In all the years she’d known him, she’d never once seen Alexander so emotionally affected by someone. 

If her hunch was right, Emily was the first to ever tug at his heartstrings like that. 

It was plain as day how special this woman was to Alexander. 

The thought settled in Megan’s chest like a heavy weight, making it hard to breathe.

Emily ignored his question and instead turned towards Megan. 

Ever since she’d been hauled back, she’d felt Megan’s eyes boring into her. 

So, with a polite smile, she offered a simple, “Hello.” 

Megan hesitated for a split second before answering, “Hey there, I’m Megan Pitts.” 

Her smile looked forced, more of a polite mask than a genuine expression. 

“I’m Emily Carter.” Emily returned the erecting.
