With a startled yelp, she erupted into heart–wrenching sobs that pierced through the stillness of the night. 

Downstairs, fresh from her evening routine, Rebecca’s ears perked up at the distant cries. Without a second thought, she bounded up the stairs. 

Once she pushed open the bedroom door, a heart–rending sight greeted her: Sophia, huddled in the middle of the king–sized bed, bawling her eyes out.

Sniffing and burying her face in Rebecca’s chest, Sophia blubbered, “Rebecca, I dreamt Daddy and Nancy left me behind.” 

Rebecca stroked her back gently. “Oh, don’t be silly, sweetie. Mr. Wilson and Ms. Thompson went to a birthday bash. They’ll be home before you know it.” 

With big, tear–filled eyes, Sophia whined, “But it’s so late! Why aren’t they back yet?” 

Rebecca stole a glance at the wall clock. It was already two in the
