Rebecca went quiet. It was understandable, really. Sophia was always either glued to Nancy or Gloria. 

So having Gloria comfort her was actually a decent option. 

True to the expectation, Sophia seemed to stop sobbing much once she nestled in Gloria’s embrace. After some thought, Rebecca left the bedroom. 

Downstairs, hardly had she rinsed her feet when Gloria appeared. 

Rebecca, a bit puzzled, blurted out, “Gloria, you managed to calm her down?” 

Gloria frowned at the direct address. “Rebecca, I use your name as a sign of respect. But it’s a bit rude of you to do the same to me. I’m Nancy’s mother, and Nancy’s going to be Ethan’s future wife. Is that how you should talk to me?” 

Rebecca was left speechless. 

Given Ethan’s affection for Nancy, Gloria had a valid point. 

Not wanting to get into an argument, she asked, “Okay, then what should I call you?” 

Gloria pondered for a few seconds. “From now on, call me Mrs. Thompson.”

Just as she was about to move on, the thought of Sophia popped up. “By the way, Mrs. Thompson, how’s Sophie doing?” 

Gloria, satisfied with the new address, nodded. “Kids, a little comfort and they’re good as new. 

Rebecca was skeptical. “I see.” 

Sophia had been difficult to console lately, yet Gloria had managed it effortlessly. 

Well, Sophia did have a soft spot for Nancy and Gloria. 

With that realization, Rebecca bid Gloria goodnight.

The next morning, right after Emily’s alarm buzzed, her phone 

rang. 

She was planning to snooze for ten more minutes, but the ringing shattered her hope. 

Without checking who it was, she answered. 

It was Ethan, his voice hoarse and weary. “Take Sophie to school today.” 

This jolted Emily awake.

Assuming he was with Nancy, she instinctively refused. “I’ve got

teaching rounds. No time to drop her off.” 

Both the rounds and her reluctance were real.

Ethan persisted. “I won’t be able to handle her pick–up and drop–off for a couple of days. Could you go to Joy Gardens to watch her in the evenings?” 

“What do you mean by no time? Working late or taking care of your grandpa?” Emily scoffed. 

Ethan didn’t mince words. “Nancy’s in the hospital, not doing great. I need to be with her.” 

Emily let out a sarcastic laugh. “So you’re dumping Sophie for her?” 

“I’m not ignoring her. I’m just swamped,” he tried to explain. 

Emily was furious. “Ethan, the situation is clear. What’s there to explain? Nancy’s your top priority, isn’t she?” 

Ethan seemed about to say more, but Emily had heard enough. “If you’ve got something to say, tell Sophie. I don’t wanna listen.” 

With that, she hung up. 

After hanging up on Ethan, Emily was in a foul mood the entire day. 

Despite insisting she’d stay out of Sophia’s business, she just Wouldn’t shake off the nagging worry. After all, Sophia was her 49

preoccupied with Nancy haunted Emily all day long. 

So, when work wrapped up in the evening, out of sheer habit, she hopped into her car and headed straight for the kindergarten. 

By the time she arrived, most of the kids had already left.

Not seeing Sophia around, Emily approached the security guard at the gate. “Excuse me, has Sophia Wilson been picked up?” 

The security guard sized her up suspiciously. 

Emily was about to blurt out that she was Sophia’s mom, but bit her tongue. 

Since Sophia started at this kindergarten, neither the teachers nor the security guards had ever recognized her. 

A wave of disappointment washed over her. Just as Emily was about to leave, Amanda, Molly’s class teacher, spotted her. “Molly’s aunt?” Amand 

called out. 

Turning around, Emily flashed a smile. “Yeah, it’s me.” 

Amanda walked over and asked, “Here to pick up Molly?” 

Emily shook her head. “Actually, I’m wondering if Sophia’s been picked up.” 

Amanda looked a bit surprised and furrowed her brow slightly. “Sophia? She didn’t come to school today.”

She worried that no one had sent Sophia to school.

Emily was a firm believer in routines, and even though kindergarten wasn’t life–or–death, she didn’t want Sophia to develop bad habits. 

So, her concern grew deeper. 

Just as she was about to take off, Amanda called out again, “Molly’s aunt!” 

Emily looked at her, a bit confused. “What’s up, Ms. Miller?” 

Amanda gushed, “Molly is such a well–behaved girl. She aces her homework and is super popular among her classmates. She’s like a little ray of sunshine. We’re all smitten with her. Having a kid like her at our kindergarten is a real treat.” 

Emily beamed with pride and thanked Amanda. 

Then, she casually asked, “What about Sophia? How’s she doing at school?” 

At the mention of Sophia, Amanda instinctively frowned. 

After a moment’s pause, she said, “Maybe it’s because of her family situation, but Sophia’s a bit bossy. She often spits at her classmates. We’ve tried to teach her right from wrong many times, but she just won’t listen. These days, she hardly has any friends at school.”
