Chapter 241 Sophia’s Temper 

Amanda’s words sent a chill down Emily’s spine. 

Luck had it that Amanda was pressed for time, so their conversation ended quickly after a few short minutes.

After much deliberation, Emily decided to head to Joy Gardens to see Sophia. 

On the drive over, Amanda’s words replayed in her mind on a loop. 

Sophia had always been such a good girl. So, when had everything changed? 

Before Emily started working, Sophia was just four years old- polite, lively, and cheerful. When Emily took her out for walks, many other moms would stop to ask her age and praise her for being so cute. 

Now, though, Sophia couldn’t even make a single friend. 

Not even Molly seemed to like her. 

Arriving at Joy Gardens, Emily didn’t spot Sophia in the lobby. Rebecca was busy in the kitchen, and only Gloria sat on the sofa, watching TV and munching on desserts. 

Hearing footsteps at the door, Gloria looked up. Her eyes filled with disgust the second she saw Emily. Ignoring the look, Emily walked straight toward the kitchen.

“Where’s Sophie?” Emily cut to the chase. 

“Ms. Sophia Wilson’s upstairs,” Rebecca replied. 

“Why didn’t she go to school today?” Emily pressed.

Rebecca paused, thinking back. “Mr. Wilson called this morning, asking me to drop her off. But when I got ready, Sophie said her stomach hurt, so she stayed home.” 

A bad feeling twisted in Emily’s chest. 

Could it be that Sophia didn’t want to go to school because she was doing poorly there, because no one liked her? 

The thought made her heart ache 

Noticing Emily’s worry, Rebecca started to say something, but stopped short. “Will you be staying for dinner at Joy Gardens, Mrs. Wilson?” 

Pulling herself together, Emily nodded. “Yes, make enough for me. I’ll go upstairs to check on Sophie.” 

“Of course,” Rebecca said. 

Heading upstairs, Emily approached Sophia’s bedroom door cautiously. Instead of going in right away, she peeked her head around the frame. 

Sophia sat at the coffee table, playing with toys alone–no smile on her face, looking far from happy.

As Emily saw Sophia like that, an unexplained sadness washed over her. 

After a moment’s hesitation, she knocked on the door. 

Sophia spun around at the sound, a word escaping her lips before she could stop it. “Nan-” She cut herself off mid–syllable, her smile vanishing in an instant. 

Clear disappointment crossed the little girl’s face, stabbing Emily’s heart without warning. 

Even so, she stepped into the room. 

Sitting down beside the sofa, Emily looked at Sophia gently. “Sophia, tell Mommy–why didn’t you go to school today?” 

Sophia had avoided looking at Emily since she walked in, not even greeting her. 

But she froze when asked the question. 

She didn’t answer, though. 

Letting out a long sigh at the silence, Emily called again, patience thinning, “Sophie?” 

Sophia kept playing with her toys, still refusing to respond. 

Her voice rising without thinking, Emily snapped, “Sophia Wilson!”

Even that didn’t get Sophia’s attention. 

Emily stood up, ready to scold her, but the complete lack of response made her drop the idea. 

So Sophia went on playing, and Emily watched, the two of them sitting in silence, ignoring each other entirely. 

When Rebecca finished cooking and went upstairs, she’d expected to see a warm mother–daughter moment. Instead, she found them not speaking a word. 

Standing at the door, she knocked softly. “Mrs. Wilson, Ms. Sophia Wilson, dinner’s ready.” 

Emily stood up and looked down at Sophia. “Sophie, let’s go downstairs for dinner.” 

Sophia finally put down her toys. She walked past Emily, running straight to Rebecca, taking her hand, and looking 

with a smile. “Rebecca, what delicious food did you make tonight?”

Glancing at Emily, Rebecca turned back to Sophia. “I made your favorite–shrimp.” 

“Thank you, Rebecca! You’re the best!” Sophia said, grinning. 

Standing in the bedroom, Emily felt as if her whole body had turned to ice.

Downstairs, Sophia and Gloria were already sitting at the dining table, eating. 

When Emily sat down, Gloria even rolled her eyes and muttered quietly under her breath, “Shameless.” 

Her voice was soft, but Emily heard it clearly. 

Gloria didn’t care about setting a good example in front of Sophia–she said whatever she wanted. 

Emily held back her anger. She didn’t want to swear or get into an argument in front of Sophia. 

Kids learned fast; it only took a few days to pick up bad habits. 

Rebecca had just finished placing all the dishes on the table and hadn’t had a chance to rest when Gloria ordered abruptly, “Rebecca, sit down and peel shrimp for Sophie. She loves shrimp.” 

Hearing that, Emily looked up at Sophia across the table, her voice firm. “Sophia, Mommy taught you–get your own food and peel it yourself. No one will take care of you forever. You need to learn to look after yourself.” 

Gloria felt Emily was deliberately going against her, so she raised her voice, demanding, “Rebecca, what are you standing around for? Hurry up!” 

Rebecca looked stuck, glancing back and forth between
