“You are the father to more than one person at this table and yet you forget the basic rule of parenting.”
“Oh, this should be interesting from the man who has been a father for a day.” Avner snorted. “By all means. Tell me what this basic rule is that I’m forgetting.”
“To protect your children.” He looked at January, “the day I found out about Kaylee we learned one of the federal agents associated with Davis was harassing Kaylee at school, terrorizing her, and making her think she’d go to jail if she didn’t tell them everyone who was ever in her house. Do you know what my wife did?”
Bette shook her head, “what could she do?”

“My wife who comes to my shoulder beat him up in a public setting, in a restaurant and made sure that prick knew she was gunning for him. I barely was able to hold her back and even with lifting her clear off the ground, she still managed to get a kick in which likely ruined his ability to procreate.” He pointed at his wife, “she protects her baby. There is a reason why they call it mama bear. A parent does everything they can to make sure their child survives, is healthy, happy, loved. Your parenting style is more aligned with what and how it benefits you. That’s not going to work for this family anymore, Dad. You need to take a very long hard look at why all three of your children are at odds with you. None of enjoy being in your presence. None of us want to be part of your organization. He,” he motioned to his grandfather, “runs a fucking Greek mafia. He’s brutal, murderous, and dangerous and yet, we prefer his company to yours because he loves us first, demands of us second.”
“That’s not true. He demanded you marry Duchess.”
“He did because he thought it was what was best for me but more importantly, when he realized how wrong he was, he apologized and he’s spent the last several years making it up to me. He owned his mistakes and he has made restitution. You questioned lineage of a child and never, not once, have you admitted the error of your ways and within minutes of arriving here to this room this evening cracked jokes about it.”

Gulliver seemed surprised to realize his daughter was there, clearly lost in the conversation with his father as if nobody else was present. “Hey, sweetheart. I’m sorry. This conversation is a lot for a little girl.”
“I have a question.”
“Sure. What is your question?”
“Did you lie to me?”
January frowned at him and then closed her eyes and shook her head. She knew where Kaylee was going with this and January felt a flurry of nerves. How much would he tell Kaylee?
“About what, Kaylee?”
“Are you a bad guy?”
“Come here,” he pushed his chair back and patted his lap, and Kaylee rounded the table and crawled up on his lap. “You never have to worry about anything I do. My job is to work as an engineer. I went to college and got my education, and I run a big company, and my work is all you need to know right now.”

people up? Like when the men were following us around at the zoo and some of them have guns, can you shoot guns too?”
“I can.” He nodded, “but you never have to fear me, Kaylee. You are safe with me. Always and forever.”
“Well, I know that!” she rolled her eyes. “I know you won’t hurt
me.”
“Then what is the problem.”
“The officers said bad guys go to jail. I don’t want you to go to jail. I don’t care if you do bad stuff. You’re my dad and I love you anyway. Just like Mom always loves me even when I get into trouble at school, I love you. I,” she sniffed a bit, “am worried you found us, but the police found you and they may take you away from me.”
He hugged her tight to his chest, “oh Kaylee, my little love, you never need to worry about such things. Nobody is taking me from you.”
“But bad guys go to jail.”
Gulliver pointed to his grandfather, “see that man over there?”
“Yes.”
“The police think he’s one of the worst in terms of bad guys?” 4/6

“Grandfather?” she made a face clearly showing she did not believe him. “He’s very nice.”
“He beats people up with that cane of his.”
“You do?” Kaylee asked with excitement. “Why?”
“Because he is the head of our very big family and he has to do things which is necessary to keep our family safe. Those things are secret and you can never tell anyone any of the things you see. Someday, Grandfather is going to let me be the leader of our family.”
“Will you beat people up with your cane?”
“No. I’ll use my fists.”
“Gulliver!” January snapped. “She’s still only seven.”
Gulliver ignored her, “Kaylee. The way it works is that we have a big family. Your dad is going to do everything he can to keep this family safe and if it means I have to beat up people to do that, I’m going to do that.”
“What if you get in trouble and go to jail?”
“I won’t. I have a lot of people who know how to keep me out of jail. Grandfather,” he looked at him, “how many times have
