Chapter 66

Beatrice slumped down beside the red carpet, her lips twisting in disdain as she burst into tears in front of everyone,

Edwina, if I hadn’t saved you from those traffickers, would you even be standing here today?she wailed.

She pounded her chest and stomped her feet, acting as if the whole world had wronged her.

She continued, I may not have given birth to you, but I fed you and clothed you. Raising you means more than just giving birth. Why shouldn’t I be called your mother?”

Abby helped Beatrice up, chiming in, Mom, don’t cry. She’s just an ungrateful brat. She’s not worth it.”

The crowd murmured among themselves, shooting Edwina looks of contempt.

They also started whispering about the Gibson family. They felt that a top family in Grindel City should not get involved with someone so coldblooded.

Imelda’s eyes went wide as she gripped Edwina’s hand. She said, Edwina, just ignore these people.

Errol, what are you standing around for? Hurry up and get them all out of here. They are so pathetic.”

Imelda was genuinely furious. Errol rushed to call security, ready to clear everyone out.

Normally, Edwina wouldn’t give this bunch of drama addicts the time of day.

But now, with all this happening right at the gates of the Gibson estate, Beatrice’s story could really damage the Gibson family’s reputation.

If some schemer decided to stir things up and brand Kelvin as ungrateful and disloyal, it would definitely do real damage to the Gibson Group.

Edwina stopped the security guards and stood her ground in front of Beatrice.

She looked at Beatrice casually, but there was a cold edge in her stare. You saved me from those traffickers?

Then why did you pay them? Was it really a rescue, or were you just making a purchase? You know the answer better than anyone.”

Everyone was in an uproar.

Benedict retorted sharply, Don’t talk nonsense and smear our name! We’ve already got a girl in our family. If we were really out to buy a child, why wouldn’t we have bought a boy instead?”

They always have an excuse for everything,Edwina thought.

Edwina let out a mocking laugh. If you really saved me, then why didn’t you hand me over to the police or help me find my real parents?

As for why you wanted a girl, it’s pretty obvious. Abby and I share the exact same birthday.

Didn’t you go to that fortuneteller and decide I should be Abby’s scapegoat for all her misfortune?”

As soon as she said that, the crowd’s whispers turned into a fullblown uproar.

A scapegoat? Is the Lennox family seriously insane, doing something this messed up?someone blurted out.

Seriously, how does she even have the nerve to play the victim? She started all this and now she’s trying to flip the script,”

another person

scoffed,

I’ve always heard Benedict and Beatrice act just like a pair of tacky nouveau riche. They’re so gross, someone else muttered.

Beatrice shricked, That’s all lies!”

Edwina’s voice dropped, almost as if she her old clothes.

was

just listing off someone else’s past. I outgrew Abby, but you still made me wear

You paid for Abby to get tutored after school, but sent me off to a trade school that did not offer a high school diploma, so I had no chance to attend the SAT.

Beatrice, just because I never made a scene about any of this doesn’t mean I forgot. Do you really want me to air all your dirty laundry in front of everyone?”

Kelvin rushed over, his expression grim, but his eyes were filled with a deep ache for Edwina. I can’t believe she had to go through all that as a kid, he thought.

Edwina, that’s enough. Don’t waste your breath them,he said.

He hated seeing Edwina reveal her scars in front of everyone, all for the sake of the Gibson family’s name.

Edwina kept her cool. I’m fine.”

To her, the Lennox family was nothing. From the day she created Ash Wings, nobody could ever push her around or mess with her again.

But I do!Kelvin said, his voice low and intense.

Kelvin’s hand wrapped around hers, warmth spreading through Edwina’s palm.

Edwina looked at him, her eyes clear and untroubled. What’s wrong?she asked.

Kelvin’s heart twisted painfully as he met those gorgeous eyes.

Just how much disappointment and suffering did she have to endure to be able to move past it all so completely?he thought.

It’s nothing. I just want them out of my sight right now!Kelvin’s voice was deadly cold, like he could kill someone at that point.

Errol personally kicked the Lennox family out on the spot.

They’d come hoping to win over Imelda, but ended up making the Gibson family hate them even more. Any hope of the Gibson and Lennox families ever patching things up was gone for good.

Beatrice completely lost it, cursing and screaming as the guards hauled her off.

She shrieked, “Edwina, you pathetic hick, don’t get ahead of yourself. After you hit twentytwo, every bit of misfortune meant for Abby is gonna crash down on you.

That’s heaven’s will. You can’t dodge it. You’ll die a miserable death!”

Kelvin’s fingers curled into tight fists, barely holding back his rage.

Edwina spoke calmly. Beatrice, there’s something you still don’t know.

Back then, those traffickers knew you wanted a scapegoat for Abby’s misfortune, so they faked my birthday to match hers. I was actually born eighty days before Abby.

Chapter 66

Since you put so much faith in heaven, why not see what it has in store for Abby?”

Beatrice’s face twisted into something downright ugly as she cussed up a storm, hurling every filthy insult she could think of.

She kept cursing and screaming until the bodyguards finally dragged her out of sight, and only then did she stop.

Abby was seething. I told you before we even got here that there’s no point trying to cozy up to the Gibson family. We’re nothing like them.

Now we’ve been mocked and humiliated for nothing. Is

by ply what you wanted?”

Beatrice’s face went red with fury as she swung her hand up, ready to smack Abby.

But Abby stood her ground, chin up and defiant. Go on, hit me. Why don’t you just finish me off?

Don’t even think about getting in with the Cole family if I’m dead.”

Beatrice dropped her hand in defeat, her eyes smoldering with frustration and unwilling anger.

On the day Edwina got kicked out of the Lennox family, they never thought that she would end up rubbing shoulders with all the big names in Grindel City since she was despised by everyone.

Beatrice glanced at Abby’s stomach. Abby, you really need to do us proud. Our family’s honor depends on you. Getting pregnant should be your top priority right now!”

At the mention of that, Abby just bit her lip, looking awkward and too embarrassed to say anything.

She’d tried to get Desmond alone plenty of times, setting up all sorts of romantic, dreamy dates, hoping he’d finally give in.

But no matter what, Desmond wouldn’t lay a finger on her. He kept saying he had to protect the baby.

Desmond’s health had always been shaky, so now that he finally had a kid on the way, he wasn’t about to mess things up. If he wanted a woman, he could have any girl he wanted. He didn’t need Abby for that.

But as time passed by, there was no way Abby could keep up the lie anymore.

Beatrice’s eyes hardened with determination. She grabbed Abby, leaned in, and whispered her scheme. Abby’s eyes nearly popped out of her head in disbelief.

Mom, how could we even do that?Abby blurted out.

Beatrice said, Why not? It’s not like you’re some pure and innocent. As long as you get pregnant, does it really matter who the father is?

Just get pregnant and lock down the Cole family first. They’re not stupid, so don’t think you can fool them with a couple of fake reports!”

Abby clenched her jaw, thinking about how the Cole family respected her and how Desmond spoiled her. She nodded fiercely, agreeing to Beatrice’s scheme.

She’d scraped and clawed her way to all this. She couldn’t let it all go down the drain just because of a baby.

She had to get pregnant, no matter what. She had to become Desmond’s rightful wife. Only then could she finally go toeto- toe with Edwina.
