Chapter 260 EmbraceÂ

Having changed the saline bag, Alexander resumed his seat. Her face was flushed an intense red, as if dipped in blood, and he stared at Emily, a jolt of alarm shooting through him.Â
Without hesitation, Alexander reached out to touch her cheek. “Are you running a fever again?” he inquired, his voice laced with concern.Â
Emily averted her face; her ear tips also tinged red. “I… I’m not running a fever,” she stammered.Â
Still skeptical, Alexander rose to his feet and pressed hisÂ
forehead against hers. Once he ascertained there was no heat, he let out a sigh of relief.Â
The moment Alexander leaned in, Emily instinctively drew her body in and squeezed her eyes shut.Â
As he was about to pull back, his cheek brushed against her fluttering eyelashes.Â
In that instant, every muscle in his body went rigid.Â
Bending his head, Alexander fixed his gaze on Emily’s lashes, which were trembling ever so slightly as her eyes were closed. They were like thick, soft feathers, and that ticklish, tingling sensation made his skin break out in goosebumps.Â

Emily’s body was warm, and Alexander knew she hadn’t fully recovered from the fever. Yet, as he looked at her lips and face, he felt himself being drawn in.Â
He half–reclined next to her, reluctant to part.Â
Eyeing those alluring lips, Alexander blurted out, “Emily, can I kiss you?”Â
It was rare for him not to call her “honey” or “babe“, and this time he even asked for her consent.Â
Emily couldn’t shake the feeling that his query was a true reflection of what was on his mind.Â
Emily felt a strange flutter in her chest upon hearing the question. Fear quickly followed, and she opened her eyes, her look full of wariness. “No, Alexander. You can’t,” she said firmly.Â
Hearing her refusal, Alexander forced himself to sit upright.Â
Emily could sense his self–restraint.Â
He shut his bloodshot eyes, sat there for a few seconds, and then slowly reopened them.Â
The two locked eyes, neither uttering a word.Â
After what seemed like ages, Alexander suddenly asked, “Are you hungry?”Â

Emily realized her stomach was growling. She nodded. “Yeah, a bit hungry,” she replied.Â
“I’ll have someone whip up some food and bring it over,” Alexander offered.Â
Emily nodded and closed her eyes again.Â
She felt alternately hot and cold, and overall, just plain miserable.Â
Noticing her discomfort, Alexander shifted from the chair to the bedside. He took her hand in his. ‘Do you want me to come up and hold you while you sleep?” he asked tenderly.Â
Emily was weak all over and in pain, and wasn’t sure if she was cold or hot. She opened her bloodshot eyes to look at Alexander, her voice hoarse. “I’m okay, Alexander,” she murmured.Â
Even though her face was deathly pale, she was still being so stubborn.Â
Ignoring her words, Alexander placed his hand on her neck. There was no sweat; instead, it was cool to the touch.Â
Fevers could be so unpredictable, causing bouts of chills and heat.Â
Deeply worried about her, Alexander didn’t care whether sheÂ

agreed or not. He took off his coat and climbed onto the hospital bed.Â
The bed was quite small, only about 3.3 feet wide.Â
Alexander was tall. When he lay down, his feet didn’t fit onÂ
the bed. So, he curled up at the edge, pulling Emily into his embrace.Â
Half of his body was hanging off the bed, but he didn’t complain at all.Â
He held Emily close to his chest, rested his chin on her shoulder, and whispered in her ear, “Still cold, Emily?”Â
As the warmth seeped into her frigid body, Emily instinctively nuzzled deeper into Alexander’s arms.Â
Only then did the shivering tremors coursing through her frame become apparent.Â
Alexander could feel her snuggling closer, so he tightened his embrace, offering her the heat of his own body.Â
Through the thin layer of their clothes, he became acutely aware of the soft curves of her form, and a rush of blood colored his cheeks bright red.Â
Blissfully unaware of Alexander’s flustered state, EmilyÂ
continued to wriggle closer, mumbling in a half–conscious state,Â

“Alexander, can you hold me a bit tighter?”Â
Her dazed mind didn’t register the intimacy of her words.Â

Without hesitation, Alexander pulled her even closer, as if trying to merge their bodies into one.Â
The warmth emanating from his body enveloped Emily. With her face pressed against his chest, her mind grew hazy, and soon, she drifted off to sleep.Â
When he heard the steady rhythm of her breathing, he loosened his grip slightly.Â
Concerned about her coldness, Alexander tucked the blanket more securely around her.Â
There he stayed, holding her in his arms, not daring to move, even as his arm gradually lost all feeling.Â
Half an hour passed, and Emily shifted in her sleep, slipping out of his embrace.Â
Looking down at her peaceful face, Alexander couldn’t help but smile. She looked so sweet and docile.Â
Overwhelmed by the urge, he bent down and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.Â
Emily didn’t stir, lost in the depths of slumber.Â

Alexander held her tenderly, savoring this stolen moment ofÂ
closeness.Â
The joy he felt was mingled with a deep–seated fear. He was terrified that when she woke up, she’d push him away and be angry with him.Â
This tender moment was but a fleeting dream, destined to end.Â
He wished with all his heart that time would stop, with Emily safely nestled in his arms forever. However, fate had other plans.Â
Half an hour later, the nurse came in to remove the IV.Â
The nurse was as quiet as a mouse, but as soon as she left, Emily’s eyes fluttered open.Â
She stared blankly at Alexander, their faces so close that a mere breath could bring their lips together.Â
As he saw her awake, a touch of sadness clouded Alexander’s eyes. He opened his mouth to say something, but the words got stuck in his throat.Â
Emily realized she was in his arms but remained surprisinglyÂ
calm.Â
Despite the fever, her mind was clear enough to remember thatÂ

she’d asked for this embrace, so she couldn’t blame him.Â

After a long, awkward silence, Emily gently prodded his chest and said, a bit sheepishly, “Alexander, I gotta go to the bathroom.”Â
