Chapter 262 I Don’t Have a Mom

Emily picked up on Alexander’s earnest desire to prove himself.

Uncertain how to respond, she fell silent.

Alexander, understanding her wariness and her current illness, didn’t press the issue.

Instead, he focused on taking care of her.

After feeding her, he poured her a steaming cup of water and watched as she sipped it.

However, the fever returned.

Alexander quickly fetched a dose of feverreducing medicine and helped Emily take it. Soon, she was fast asleep.

Throughout the night, Alexander remained by her side.

He gently wiped the sweat from her brow, adjusted the covers, and made sure she was as comfortable as possible.

As dawn began to break, Alexander finally succumbed to

exhaustion.

He took Emily’s hand in his and laid his head on the edge of the bed. At over six feet tall, the position was far from comfortable, but sleep claimed him quickly.

In a daze, Emily felt someone gripping her hand tightly, as if trying to crush it.

Waking up in pain, she saw Alexander lying beside her hospital bed, his fingers clutching her hand as though he was terrified she’d slip away.

When Emily tried to move her hand, Alexander didn’t wake up. Instead, he turned his face in a different direction, getting even closer to her. So close that she only had to tilt her head slightly

to touch his face.

Emily looked down at Alexander’s features. He had a straight nose, welldefined features, thick eyelashes, and beautifully shaped eyebrows.

Such a face must have charmed countless young girls.

Yet, the notorious lady’s man was sitting right beside her

hospital bed at this moment, standing guard and taking care of

her.

How could Emily not have questions in her heart?

A man like Alexander might lack many things, but women were definitely not one of them.

However, what he had done for her was undeniably real.

Emily wasn’t heartless. Even if Alexander was just pretending to be nice to her or had selfserving motives, what he’d done for her was truly extraordinary.

Alexander could have held his head high with pride, but he was willing to bend down to put on her shoes. He could have fallen asleep in the arms of a prettier and more shapely woman, yet he held her, who was all sticky.

How could Emily not be touched when thinking about all these?

As she stared at Alexander’s face, a whirlwind of complex

emotions swirled in her heart.

Just then, the screen of the phone on the bedside table flashed.

Emily reached for it and saw a message from Ethan: [Come to, the hospital to look after Sophie today. I’ve got a meeting at the office.]

She stared at the message for a long time.

Sophia was sick, but did she really need Emily? Emily decided not to reply.

After silencing her phone, she tossed it back onto the bedside table nonchalantly.

Alexander was still sleeping soundly, and Emily didn’t want to wake him. So, she let him hold her hand.

At eight in the morning, Chloe walked into the room.

The sound of the door opening roused Alexander, and he opened his bloodshot eyes.

Spotting that her arrival had woken Alexander up, Chloe felt a twinge of embarrassment and quickly apologized, Sorry, I came without asking Emily first. Didn’t mean to wake you up.”

Alexander got to his feet. Instead of looking annoyed, he flashed a smile at Chloe and said, No need to be so formal, Chloe.”

Chloe was holding a food container. After placing it on the bedside table, she turned to Alexander and said, You had a rough night last night.”

With a grin, Alexander said, Come on, Chloe. Taking care of Emily is only natural for me. Besides, since you’ve given me this chance, I’d be a fool not to take it.”

Chloe glanced at Alexander and then at Emily.

As an outsider, she could easily sense the relationship between

them.

Alexander was clearly headoverheels for Emily, but it wasn’t certain if Emily felt the same way

Emily, Chloe spoke up at the right moment, I’ve got a shoot today, so I’ll have to trouble you to look after Emily again, Mr. Lessing. I’ll come and relieve you later.”

Hearing this, Alexander could hardly contain his joy. For him, this was a blessing, not a trouble.

As long as he could be with Emily, he’d do anything.

Alexander smiled at Chloe and said, No problem at all, Chloe. I can stay with Emily for the next couple of days if you’re busy.”

Chloe understood what Alexander meant and just gave a faint smile. Instead of responding directly, she changed the subject. Mr. Lessing, both Emily’s brother and I just want what’s best for Emily.”

Alexander knew exactly what she was getting at and replied straightforwardly, Don’t worry, Chloe. I’ll definitely take good care of Emily.”

Without other words, Chloe just turned to look at Emily, who was lying quietly on the bed, wearing a rather complicated expression.

Chloe walked over, gently felt Emily’s forehead, and then whispered, I’ll come to keep you company later tonight, okay?”

Emily nodded. Sure.”

Meanwhile, at nine o’clock, Sophia had just woken up when a nurse came in to start an IV drip.

There was no one else in the ward except Sophia.

After hanging the IV bag, the nurse asked curiously, Sweetie, can you tell me where your mom is?”

Sophia snapped back, I don’t have a mom.”

Seeing Sophia’s fierce look, the nurse didn’t

questions.

Not long after the IV drip started, Sophia’s fever spiked again.

The nurse quickly found some feverreducing medicine for her.

But even after taking the medicine, Sophia’s condition didn’t improve.

The nurse got worried and went to consult the doctor. The doctor said it was normal for a flu patient to have a fever for up to three days.

Fearing that it was dangerous for Sophia to be alone, the nurse kept a close eye on her.

Sophia’s fever just wouldn’t go down; in fact, it got even worse.

The nurse got really anxious and asked Sophia, Honey, can you tell me your mom’s phone number?”

Sophia, who was already groggy, mumbled a phone number.

The nurse jotted it down and called the number, but no one

answered.

She then sent a text message saying: [Sophia has a high fever that won’t go down. Please come to the hospital as soon as possible.]

But there was no reply.

When the nurse put away her phone and looked at Sophia again, she found that the little girl had passed out.

So, the nurse pressed the call button on the bedside.

Soon, Sophia was rushed into the pediatric emergency room.
