A Phone Call Part I
January was watching through the patio as the four men were drinking and talking and she tried not to laugh at Glenn’s facial expressions. If anything screamed untrusting, it was the way her brother–in–law was barely able to stop the eye rolls from happening.
Loud giggles from the bedroom had January distracted though and she smiled at Bette, “I better go find out what it is which has them squealing like stuck pigs. My experience tells me Kaylee is up to something she shouldn’t be.”
“She’s a handful.” Bette offered her observation. “Reminds me a lot of Gulliver when he was young. He was outspoken and brash too.”
January shot a look at Avner knowing exactly why it was Gulliver became reserved as he got older. She prayed Kaylee never tampered down that spirit she loved so much in her little girl.
“Do you mind if I come with?” Bette asked as January got off the sofa.
“Not at all. Come on.” January waved her on. She walked to the bedroom with Bette on her heels. She paused in the doorway watching while Kaylee and Mitsos were laughing uproariously qtysomething, but Darwin’s high–pitched giggle was coming 7:17 from the screen “What are you throo un to?”

lips pulled into a wide smile. “We were telling Mitsos all about our class and Darwin was telling Mitsos about the time we put worms in the teacher’s sandwich.”
“They were wriggling everywhere,” Darwin’s voice carried out with a giggle.
“I’m pretty sure you both got into trouble for that.” January recalled with a serious expression how she’d taken Kaylee’s tablet from her for two full weeks.
“It was worth it,” Kaylee beamed. She looked at Bette, “it was my idea. I got all the worms from my Nana’s garden.”
“Why would you do such a thing?”
“She did it,” January moved to sit next to the kids on the bed and smiled at Darwin on the screen, “because her teacher was upset with her over her math test scores and one of the questions on the math test was a word problem and included something about birds eating worms.”
“If there are three birds and each bird has six worms but only two birds eat all their worms and one bird only eats half their worms, how many worms are left?” Darwin recited the question excitedly. “Kaylee said the teacher’s big nose looked like a beak and it was why she was thinking of worms.”

“Isn’t she only in grade two? That sounds like complex math 2/5 for kids in grade two.”

“Can they even read all those words?” Bette grunted as she moved onto the bed on the other side of Mitsos, who seemed confused that his grandmother was joining them.
“The teacher was reading out the word problem, and they were given toothpicks or something they used to count. It’s a weird math program.” January shrugged, “I was never good at math. It’s why I have an accountant and a manager to run my business because I can do the creative stuff but not the bookkeeping and ordering.” She looked at Darwin, “I like your pajamas, Darwin.”
“Thanks! My Grannie got them for me. I’m at her house tonight because my dad got called into work for something. She made me falafel for supper. It was so good.”
“Sounds delicious.” January noted the woman in the background of the screen, “hi Enid!”
“Hi January. You’re all safe and sound?”
“We are.”
“I saw I have a few guards on my street tonight and Ernst was complaining about someone following him back to the office. Tell Gulliver I said thank you. It means a lot he kept his word.”
“Of course.”

real. It’s not as good as a sister but it’s close!”
Enid’s facial expression as she looked at her phone made January grimace. Then Gulliver came into the room and motioned for January to go to him. She knew Enid was going to ask something, but she held a finger up to her. “Gulliver just came in. Give me a minute.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Can I speak with you out here? Mom can you sit with the kids for a minute?”
“Sure.” She followed him to the living room, surprised when he closed the door to keep the kids from hearing. His father was standing next to Ford and Glenn was pacing frantically.
“What’s going on?”
“Ernst needed to go back to his office to check on some lab results. Davis and a crew were waiting there for him. They grabbed him as he was getting out of his car.”
“They took him. Where did they take him?” January gripped her abdomen worriedly.
“The guys we assigned to him had their tires shot out.” Gulliver rubbed his face, “they immediately called their backup. They called Enid to tell her to lock all the doors and windows and 4/5

“Why him? Why grab him when Davis could have grabbed anyone else?”
“I don’t know. I truly don’t know.” Gulliver took a breath, “we’re going to go and get him back.”
“I’m coming with you.”
“January, I need you to stay here with Mom, Thisbe and grandfather.”
“You’re going to take him,” she waved at Avner, “and leave me behind?”
“Despite being a pain in my ass, he’s done jobs for the family in the past. It’s how he met my mother. He knows how to be an
asset.”
“Ernst is my friend! He was my friend before any of you even knew him and my friendship is likely what got him captured by fucking Davis. I’m coming with you!”
