Chapter 269 Hadn’t Bothered Her 

Earlier, drowsiness had been weighing heavily on Alexander, but now, it had fled. Emily, too, was wide–awake. 

Alexander cradled Emily close, his left arm serving as a pillow beneath her neck while his right arm encircled her waist, pressing her back snugly against his chest. 

The warmth of their bodies intertwined; through the thin fabric of the shirt, Emily could feel the heat radiating off Alexander, as if he were on the verge of combustion. 

In the hushed stillness, neither one uttered a word. 

Minutes ticked by, and sleep remained elusive for both. 

Finally, Alexander broke the silence. 

He pressed his lips to her earlobe, nibbling softly as he murmured, “You worried about Sophia?” 

The ticklish sensation made Emily squirm a bit. “No, I’m not worried about anyone,” she replied, trying to sound 

nonchalant. 

Alexander saw through her act. “If you’re itching to see her, we can go. I’ll tag along,” he offered.

They quickly got themselves together and made their way to the pediatric wing. 

From about 20 feet away, Emily spotted Ethan with his head resting on Nancy’s shoulder. 

She stopped short, and Alexander halted beside her. 

Rather than going over to Ethan and Nancy, Emily made a detour straight to the doctor’s office. 

She needed to hear from the horse’s mouth that Sophia was okay. 

Once inside, the on–duty doctor filled her in on Sophia’s 

condition. 

As a fellow doctor, Emily quickly grasped the situation. Only then did the knot in her stomach loosen. 

As she stepped out of the office, her eyes drifted over to Ethan again. 

He was still slumped on Nancy’s shoulder, their bodies so close they seemed almost one. 

Noticing Emily’s discomfort, Alexander stepped forward and, without asking, swept her up in his arms. “Hey, babe, if you don’t mind, I can be your rock,” he said, looking into her eyes. 2/6

Nancy responded by shaking her head and offering a warm smile. “No, I’m good. Not a bit tired.” 

Ethan reached up and gently tousled Nancy’s hair. In a voice dripping with affection, he said, “Let me send you home. You 

need some rest.” 

At his words, Nancy quickly declined, her determination evident. “It’s all good. I wanna stay here with you and Sophie.”

Seeing his firm stance, Nancy finally relented. “Alright, if you insist.” 

Ethan got up from his seat and stretched out his hand towards Nancy. “Come on, let’s go.” 

As Nancy stared at his outstretched hand, her mind wandered back to the sight of Alexander holding Emily earlier. 

This could be a prime opportunity to clear up any misunderstandings, should there be any. 

After a brief moment of contemplation, Nancy flashed a gentle smile and said, “Ethan, you’re beat. No need to drag yourself to send me back. I’ll grab a cab and be fine.” 

Ethan wasn’t having it. “No way. I won’t feel right unless I see you home myself.” 

Nancy’s eyes sparkled with an idea. “Sophie’s here. You stay and keep her company. I got here on my own, didn’t I? I’ll be okay.” 

This made Ethan pause and think. 

Considering Sophia, he finally gave in. “Okay, then. I’ll have Lucas come and take you home.”

She then started walking towards the hospital. 

At this late hour, it wasn’t the safest out for a young woman alone. 

So, going back to the hospital was a practical choice. 

Instead of heading to the inpatient area, she found a spot in the hospital courtyard to sit and wait for Alexander’s reply. 

Meanwhile, back in the ward, Alexander had just brought
