Just as victory seemed to be slipping through Emily’s fingers. once again, Alexander made a sudden move. He reached over and gently took Emily’s hand in his, guiding it to place a crucial piece on the grid. 

As he did so, he leaned in closer, his lips brushing 

ever–so–lightly against her earlobe. In a soft, melodious voice, he whispered, “Draw here. It’s a game–changer.” 

His voice had a warmth that seeped into Emily’s heart, causing a flutter of nerves. 

For a brief moment, she lost her cool, but she quickly regained her composure. 

“That’s a real smart move,” she commented casually. 

Sure enough, that single move transformed the seemingly hopeless situation. The once–disjointed lines were now connected, opening up a world of possibilities. 

Alexander got lost in the sight of Emily’s delicate profile. He inhaled the sweet scent of her perfume and flashed a mischievous smile. “I’ve got plenty more aces up my sleeve. You’re in for a treat,” he teasingly promised.

Alexander sat up straight, looking at Michael with a haughty tilt of his chin. “Hey, you can call a helper to join if you want.”

Taking a jab at his friend, Alexander said, “You should be embarrassed. You planning to die alone?”

Emily knew it was Vanessa and called out, “Come on in.” 

The door swung open, and in walked Vanessa, laden with bags. 

Michael glanced up and saw a vision in casual style. She had on a baseball cap, paired with a trendy hoodie and skin–tight jeans, and a cross–body bag slung across her shoulder. 

Her makeup was minimal, just a touch of foundation and a swipe of lipstick, yet her tall, statuesque figure, along with those captivating eyes, made her quite a sight to behold. 

Michael, no stranger to female charm, was immediately

“I had a fever last night. I wasn’t thinking straight. Don’t take it to heart, Mr. Lessing.” 

Well aware of Emily’s intention, Alexander still dug in his heels. “I’m not going anywhere. If you want Ms. Taylor to be here, fine. I’ll just stay in the hospital. You can act like I’m 

invisible.”

Emily didn’t flinch. She stared back at him, her expression cool as a cucumber. “Ethan’s my husband, and Sophia’s my daughter. If I can’t visit them, who else should I go to? You? Just what are you to me?” 

The tension in the room ratcheted up as the duo locked horns. 

Michael tore his eyes away from Vanessa and instantly clocked that Alexander was seething mad. 

The same went for Emily. 

Rather than releasing her, Alexander tightened his hold. As he leaned in close, his voice dropped to a near–whisper. “Yeah, you’re here with me. ‘Cause I’m your lover, the only one you’ve got.”
