As they made their way out of the ward, Michael’s voice suddenly broke the silence. “Emily, think you might’ve got the wrong idea about Alexander. If there’s a misunderstanding, you’ve gotta clear the air with him. I know that guy inside out. You’re the one he’s crazy about.”
That made Emily halt in her tracks. After a brief moment of hesitation, she spun around to face Michael. “Mr. Winslow, thanks for coming to be with me today. It really meant a lot. And I’m grateful to Mr. Lessing, too. But there’s no misunderstanding between me and him.”
As Emily turned to leave, it was obvious Michael had more to say, but Alexander stopped him. “Michael, leave it be.”
Michael frowned, his concern palpable. “Emily’s definitely got something wrong about you. I’ll go set the record straight.”
Alexander grabbed his friend’s hand, a wry smile on his face as he looked down. “All this time, it’s always been Ethan in her heart.”
“Alexander, you gotta go talk to her, face–to–face.” Michael wasn’t having it.

Alexander’s eyes started to water. He fought back the
emotions, but his voice still went hoarse. “Losing to Emily? It
ain’t so bad.”
Michael gave his shoulder a sympathetic pat, suddenly at a loss. for words to comfort him.
With a forlorn smile, Alexander said, “Let’s go. She doesn’t need me around. I’m just in the way.”
Despite the anger, the frustration, and the helplessness churning inside him, leaving was the only option.
Compared to Ethan, he always came up short in Emily’s eyes.
Down in the hospital garden after taking the elevator, Emily and Vanessa found themselves in a pavilion.
Vanessa looked around, confused. “I thought we were visiting Ethan and Sophia. What gives?”
Emily plopped down on the stone bench, eyes growing misty without a word.

Vanessa said he’d been trying to reach out, but she’d given him the cold shoulder.

Hearing this, Emily spun around to find Rebecca.

A look of relief washed over Emily’s face. “That’s a relief.”
It was obvious Rebecca had something else on her mind, but Emily wasn’t in the mood to listen. “Rebecca, you go back to your work. Vanessa and I are gonna take a little stroll.”
With that, she seized Vanessa’s hand and made her exit from the pavilion.

The hospital garden was expansive. Even in the early winter, the air was perfumed with the sweet scent of osmanthus.
After some time, Vanessa gave Emily a gentle nudge, gesturing with her eyes for Emily to look behind.
There, approaching slowly, was Ethan.
Shrouded in the mist, he had on an unbuttoned black overcoat. His thick hair was damp with the moisture from the air. He emerged from the haze like a figure from a dream, his coat billowing in the wind.

Vanessa didn’t answer right away; instead, she eyed Emily, ready to whisk her away if Emily signaled she didn’t want to

In the end, Emily gave Vanessa’s hand a little pat. “Go take a walk around.”
Vanessa was worried, yet Emily flashed her a reassuring smile and a look that put her at ease, so she left.

Standing at a towering height, Ethan easily hemmed Emily in. There was no way for her to escape.
