Chapter 276 We’re Just Worlds Apart 

Having draped the coat over Emily’s shoulders, Ethan was worried she might shrug it off. So, he gently held her shoulders through the overcoat and leaned in a bit, saying, “Keep it on. I’ve got something to tell you.” 

The long–reaching coat almost enveloped Emily entirely. 

She looked a bit of a sight, much like a person wrapped in a big 

old sack. 

Rather than responding to Ethan, Emily casually mentioned, “The outside air’s a breath of fresh air. After Sophie had that fever and being stuck in that small space, you ought to take her out more often to get some fresh oxygen.” 

Noticing that Emily wasn’t shrugging off the coat anymore, Ethan gradually withdrew his hands from her shoulders. 

“Alright,” he said in reply. 

Looking up at him, she asked, “So, what’s this chat about?” 

“Are you feeling any better?” Ethan stared at her face. 

Emily was in no mood for beating around the bush. “Cut to the

The suggestion took Emily by surprise. She only hesitated for a split–second, but then firmly declined, “Thanks, but no. I’m good.” 

Ethan was about to say more, but Emily didn’t give him the 

chance. 

“Ethan, in less than twenty days, we’ll finalize the divorce,” she stated, a combination of a gentle reminder and a clear warning. 

Seeing her standoffish and indifferent demeanor, Ethan merely responded with a soft “Yeah.” 

With a faint smile, Emily started taking off the coat. “If there’s 2/6 nothing else, I’ll take my leave.”

With no other option, Ethan took the coat back. 

As soon as he did, Emily turned around without a second thought and walked away. 

Seeing her stride off with steely determination, Ethan was immediately swept up in the tides of old memories. 

Back then, when he’d return home, she’d be there to take his briefcase and coat. When Ethan was about to go out, Emily would make sure his tie was straight. On those late–night workdays, she’d bring him a hot cup of cocoa. And when he was ready to wind down, she’d have a warm bath ready for him. 

Even though they didn’t spend much time living under the same roof, whenever they did, Emily would always take such good care of Ethan in every little way.

Left watching her fade into the distance, Ethan stood rooted, a strange sense of loss washing over him. 

Curiosity gnawed at him. Who could this mystery lunch–bringer be? Alexander? Or perhaps Aaron? 

That night, Vanessa had an event to attend, so she took off once the Carter family arrived at the hospital.

Propped up against the bed frame, Emily nibbled at the food Ryan had brought. 

Meanwhile, Ryan sat on a chair, peeling an orange.

After wiping his hands on a napkin, he fixed his gaze on Emily and inquired, “Where’s Alexander?” 

That fateful day, Alexander had carried Emily out of the house in his arms. 

When the family rushed to the hospital and found out she just had a fever, Ryan told his parents to head home. 

He’d been itching to grill Alexander about his presence at the Carter Manor, but Chloe had stepped in and shooed him away. 

Ryan knew exactly what Chloe was up to.

Emily finished off what was on her plate and picked up an orange slice. 

“He’s from the Lessing dynasty. We’re just worlds apart,” she murmured. 

Underneath the snark, Ryan’s words were laced with concern. 

Looking at her with a furrowed brow, he said, “I’m not gonna stop you from dating, but find someone real. All that high–society jazz is just smoke and mirrors. Chloe won’t stop singing Alexander’s praises, but I just don’t get it. How’s he supposed to take care of you for life if he bugs out after two measly days?”
