Chapter 278 Forget About That Promise
Amid a sudden, sharp crack, the wine glass splintered into pieces.
Shards of glass dug into Alexander’s palm, yet he remained oblivious to the pain. Instead, his eyes, brimming with unshed tears, were a maelstrom of struggle and torment.
Michael watched, his heart aching with pity. “Come on, Alexander, why keep torturing yourself? If you’re that into her, go and fight for her,” he urged, his voice laced with concern.
Scarcely had the words left his mouth when Kyrian spoke up, “Snatching her away isn’t legal. We gotta handle this with a cool head.”
Michael rolled his eyes at Kyrian. “Dude, this isn’t the time to be Mr. Law–abiding. Alex’s in a real bad place here.”
Kyrian clamped his lips shut, a slight frown on his face.
Meanwhile, Alexander was lost in his own world, deaf to their exchange. He cast a fleeting glance at the blood seeping through his palm and then rose unsteadily to his feet.
“Where you off to?” Michael asked, worry etched on his face as hé got up too.

It was well past one in the morning when Emily stirred from her light sleep and made her way to the bathroom.
As she emerged, the dim glow filtering through the window revealed a figure sitting on the chair beside the hospital bed.
Recalling Ethan’s words before he left, Emily assumed it was him. “Ethan, I told you, I don’t need any—”
But before she could finish, the figure shot up from the chair. Turning around, she saw it was Alexander, not Ethan.
For a moment, she froze. Then, in a flash, Alexander reached out, grabbed her, and gently but firmly tossed her onto the hospital bed.
As Emily landed on the soft mattress, Alexander loomed over her, his knees straddling either side of her body. He caged her in, leaving her with no means of escape.
The potent stench of alcohol hit her nostrils like a punch, making her chest constrict painfully.
Alexander’s hand was wrapped in a white bandage, but the blood had already seeped through, creating a gruesome red patch.

Emily wriggled a bit, but with Alexander’s large frame pinning her down, there was little she could do.
Despite being so close, Alexander was careful not to put his full weight on her, supporting himself on his knees.
At the sight of his wild, blood–red eyes and the look of desperation on his face, Emily’s voice trembled as she said, “You’re Alexander.”
At her words, Alexander’s tense body seemed to deflate.
He rested his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the stillness of the night.
He didn’t speak, just stared into her eyes as if trying to uncover all her secrets. His gaze was so intense that Emily felt uncomfortable.
Finally, she stuttered, “How… how’d you end up here?”
No sooner had she asked the question than Alexander nestled his face against her neck. His voice, a mere whisper, quivered
with emotion.
“I’m a real idiot. I just couldn’t help coming to see you,” he mumbled, his voice choked with sobs and his body shaking.
Emily’s heart tightened at his words, a pang of sadness welling 3/6 up inside.

After a long while, Alexander finally lifted his head from her neck. His eyes were bloodshot. Reaching out, he grabbed her hand and slapped it hard against his own face.
He attempted to do it again, but Emily resisted fiercely. “What on earth are you doing, Alexander?” she exclaimed.
Seeing that he couldn’t move her hand anymore, Alexander locked his tear–filled eyes with hers. “You were the one who stirred things up, Emily. You went back on your word. You lied to me. You’re such a liar,” he accused, his voice laced with pain.
Emily looked at him, utterly bewildered. “I have no clue what you’re talking about,” she said, her brows furrowed in
confusion.
Alexander stared at her intently for what felt like an eternity.
Finally, he let out a bitter laugh. “Forget it then. It’s probably better if you never understand,” he said, his tone resigned.
She couldn’t recall any promises between them. Since she was head over heels for Ethan, perhaps it was for the best that she
couldn’t remember.
Remembering would only bring her more heartache.
For Alexander, it was preferable that Emily remained in the
dark.

Standing next to the hospital bed, he surreptitiously wiped away the tears that had trickled down his face, hidden by the veil of night.
Emily couldn’t read his expression, nor could she figure out what was going on in his mind.
But she could feel, deep in her bones, that Alexander was truly heartbroken.
Before she could utter a single word, Alexander spun around and headed towards the door.
Emily watched his retreating back and instinctively called out, “Alexander, wait…”
But Alexander cut her off. “Emily, you’d better forget about that promise for the rest of your life,” he said, and then dashed out of the ward.
He was terrified that if he stayed any longer, he’d break down completely.
Once Alexander’s figure vanished from the doorway, the words on the tip of Emily’s tongue faded away.
After he left, sleep evaded Emily. She sat on the hospital bed, lost in a daze for a long time.

However, try as she might, there was no trace of Alexander in her memory.
And what on earth was this so–called promise?
