Once Linden finished assigning tasks, the young men spit up and headed off to complete their jobs.
Meanwhile, Ava remained where she stood, watching the direction Linden had gone.
Malory stood beside her. “What are you looking at?”
“Just feeling grateful our captain actually knows how to ad
Malory smiled. “Linden’s got a lot of influence among the guys. Didn’t you know? Like you, he’s been voted model cadet twice in a row. Judging from how things are going, the third one’s practically guaranteed.”
Hearing that, Ava laughed. “Is that so? I guess I’m lucky got assigned to a good team.”
“Well… that’s debatable.” Malory’s eyes flicked toward the back of the group.
“Oh my god, Elmer, you’re amazing! You have to work hard too, Edwin!”
“Holly, how come you’re only praising those two? Am I not working too?”
“You’re great too, Zion! You’re all so great! I admire you all so much!”
Ava felt goosebumps rising at the sound of Holly’s sugary giggles. She glanced over and saw the little flirt- fest happening several feet away, then muttered, “Is she always like that in your platoon?”
“She’s always been a bit of a princess,” Malory said. “But not this dramatic. Probably because there are more guys around now.”

Ava let the matter drop and walked farther away. Malory, too, found a clean spot, sat down, and zoned out.
Ava hadn’t gone far when she spotted a patch of wild mushrooms growing at the base of a tree. She crouched down, examined them carefully, and thought they looked edible–but wasn’t completely sure.
Glancing around to make sure no one was watching, she opened her palm. “Hey, little one, come let me take. a look. Are you safe to eat?”
A swirl of green light appeared, then one of the mushrooms popped out of the soil and leaped into Ava’s hand.
She picked it up. “So you’re edible?”
The tiny creature in her palm wriggled, its leaflike body brushing against her fingers in affectionate
reassurance.
Over the next ten minutes, Ava joyfully collected mushrooms all through the woods until she could barely hold any more. When she emerged from the trees again she saw Linden coming her way–holding a plump pheasant by the legs.
She grinned. “Not bad, Captain! I found mushrooms. We can make a pot of pheasant and mushroom soup!”
Malory saw her return. “You were out picking mushrooms? I thought you’d gone wandering off.”
Ava approached as she talked. “I was wandering. That’s how I found the mushrooms.”
Holly suddenly raised her voice. “Ava! Don’t just pick random things! Wild mushrooms can kill you! Who

knows if the ones you grabbed are poisonous? Even if they’re not, anything grown out here is polluted unless a lab certifies it! Do you have no common sense?
Ava dumped the mushrooms into a basin. “Don’t use your tiny bit of limited thinking to judge other people.”
“You-” Holly’s jaw clenched. She turned to Linden, “Captain, say something! Things that grow naturally can be contaminated. I’m not wrong! Even a three–year–old knows that.”
Ava ignored her and instead turned toward the group. Does anyone in our team have wood elemental power?”
Linden shook his head. “No wood elemental power users in our group.”
“Forget I asked then. I’ll just eat them myself.” Ava picked up the basin. “Captain, I’ll borrow the basin to wash these.”
With that, she pulled out her long blade and headed down the mountain without waiting for a reply.
Linden watched her disappear into the trees, then turned to Holly. “Thompson, since you weren’t assigned any tasks, keep your mouth shut. Stop stirring trouble in my team.”
“What do you mean I’m stirring trouble? This is a common–sense issue! She’s picked poisonous mushrooms -am I not allowed to warn her? Who knows what her background’s like! Maybe she’s never even eaten fresh fruit before and thinks wild mushrooms are treasure! She’s going to poison herself!”
Ava practically flew down the slope. Soon she reached the halfway point and ran into Stuart and Falco. She paused, asked how far the water source was, got her answer, and sprinted onward.
“What’s she doing?” Stuart asked, scratching his head.
Falco grunted, “No idea. Let’s just go.”
When Ava reached the water, she got down on her knees and began washing the mushrooms. As she cleaned them, she noticed several fish darting through the shallows, and her spirits soared.
She unsheathed her long blade, focused completely, and struck with sharp precision. Water splashed under the force of her strokes, and after a few tries, she speared a plump carp.
With that, she hauled it onto the shore, grabbed a stone, and knocked it cleanly on the head before scaling and gutting it.
