With a fleeting smile, Emily explained, “Just gonna go to the 

restroom.” 

Alexander watched her with a worried look in his eyes. 

He understood she was deeply saddened by Sophia’s situation and decided not to expose her lie. 

After washing her hands, Emily told the kids, “Be right back after I use the restroom, okay?” 

Then she turned and walked off. Alexander noticed right away she wasn’t headed towards the restroom. 

Taking off his apron, he said to Tommy, “Hey, Tommy. You and Molly take the food we made to Ms. Miller. I’ll go see where she went.” 

“Got it, Mr. Lessing!” Tommy shouted back. 

Alexander quickly washed his hands and set off in the direction Emily had gone. 

She wasn’t walking fast, so it didn’t take long for him to catch

Moved by her suffering, Alexander sat down beside her. He took out a clean handkerchief from his pocket and held it out. “Here, dry your eyes,” he said softly. 

Emily took it and thanked him in a hoarse voice, “Thanks.” 

Alexander stared straight ahead and asked calmly, “Hurting bad, isn’t it?”

However, Emily wiped her tears and insisted, “Not really.” 

He kept his gaze forward, knowing she was vulnerable and didn’t want to show it. 

Hearing her denial, he let out a bitter laugh. “Well, now you know how I’ve felt all this time.” 

Emily fell silent.

Unable to hold back, she turned and hugged Alexander tightly, crying her heart out on his shoulder. 

“Sophie wasn’t like this before. I swear. But she won’t listen to me. I don’t know what to do,” she sobbed. 

Alexander could feel her body shaking. He put his arm around her and murmured, “I know, I know.” 

Emily cried for a long time, sharing memories of how well–behaved Sophia used to be.

Alexander just sat there quietly, listening. 

After about twenty minutes, Emily lifted her head from Alexander’s shoulder. 

She looked a bit better, and the tears had stopped.

The two turned back the way they’d come. As they neared the spot where Molly and Tommy were waiting, Sophia’s voice drifted from the right–hand woods. “Nancy, I’ve lost my mom. Please, be my mom.” 

When Sophia was getting beaten up by Molly, Emily hadn’t intervened. 

So, in Sophia’s heart, Emily was no longer the mother figure she 

once was.
