In an instant, Emily ended the call, leaving Matthew on the other end listening to the dial tone.

With a smile on his face, he murmured, “This Ethan, so much like a hot–headed young buck. I was never this hasty in my day.” 

Meanwhile, Emily had reached Vanessa’s place. She kicked off her shoes at the entrance and joined Vanessa in the cozy living 

room. 

After Emily recounted the day’s events, Vanessa let out an indignant curse. “What a pair of trash! They’re a match made in hell.” 

Emily just smiled, her heart no longer troubled by Ethan. 

Being able to talk about her past relationship so calmly was a clear sign she’d moved on. 

But Vanessa still had her doubts. “You told the old man you wouldn’t go home. What if Ethan shows up? Your little lie will fall apart.” 

Emily grinned confidently, saying, “Ethan won’t be going back tonight.”

Almost immediately, Emily caught a hint of who the man with the horn might be. 

But Vanessa was quicker on the uptake.

Another voice chimed in, “Yeah, save this drama for daylight hours.” 

But Derek didn’t care. He had pulled some strings to find Vanessa. Therefore, he wasn’t going to let this chance slip by. 

“Vanessa, I messed up. I’m sorry. Please forgive me,” he pleaded through the horn. 

Vanessa felt nothing but revulsion. His words were like a bad smell she couldn’t get rid of. 

Derek kept saying, “Baby, give me another chance. I’ll never do anything to hurt you again. Just come down and talk to me, please.” 

Vanessa knew better. His show of humility was just a trap. 

Once she was down there, he’d go back to his old ways. 

All she felt was a mix of heartbreak and disgust. 

The angry neighbors continued to berate Derek and even started throwing tomatoes at him from above.

In the stillness of the room, Emily fixed her gaze on Vanessa, her lips sealed. 

Vanessa strolled over to the coffee table. Picking up her mobile, she then turned to Emily, trying to put her at ease. “Hey, don’t worry. I’m not off to meet him. I’m gonna give the cops a ring.” 

Right after, she dialed the emergency number and filled the police in on what had happened. The voice on the other end assured her that help would be on the way pronto. 

It was less than ten minutes before the police showed up at the apartment complex downstairs. 

Derek was hauled away by the officers, charged with causing a ruckus in public. 

After Derek’s outburst, sleep seemed a far–off dream for both Emily and Vanessa.

Ethan brushed off her answer and continued, “Sophie woke up. wailing in the middle of the night. Can you head back and settle her down?”
