She kept her head down, her eyelashes casting a shadow on her cheeks. Her tone was firm and serious.

Completely bewildered by her change of attitude, Alexander pressed on. His voice was low and urgent. “Tell me what I did wrong. I’ll fix it, I promise. Just tell me.” 

Emily looked right into Alexander’s eyes and softly said, “Hey, you’ve done nothing wrong, not a thing.”

He reckoned Emily must have been spouting nonsense in the heat of the moment and was about to make amends.

Emily felt like she was drowning. She pushed and punched at Alexander’s chest as hard as she could, but all that came out were muffled sounds. 

When she finally went limp and slumped against him, Alexander finally broke the kiss. 

But he still held her head firmly. With his forehead pressed against hers, he panted, “Emily, you owe me this. I’m just getting a bit of what I’m owed.” 

Then Alexander slowly let go. 

But the second he did, Emily raised her hand and slapped him across the face with all her might.
