Chapter 242 Rumors Take Shape

Malory snorted and glanced at the way Zocy and Naomi were staring at her like she was a wolf at the door. 

“Ava and I made up,” she said. “We fought it out and bonded over it. We’re friends now. If you don’t believe me, ask Ava.” 

Zoey still couldn’t wrap her head around it. She turned to Ava with a look of pure betrayal. 

“Ava, it’s only been seven days! Seven days, and you’ve already teamed up with your sworn enemy. Then what am I supposed to be? New friends, bright smiles–and I’m already yesterday’s news.” 

Noelle laughed even harder. She didn’t care how ridiculous she must look to everyone else. Even if people rolled their eyes at her, she kept laughing until she almost lost her breath. 

Naomi grabbed Ava’s hand. “Ava, these two are drama queens. Let’s ignore them and let them perform their shows.” 

She tugged Ava as if to leave, but Zoey and Malory immediately reached out and pulled Naomi back. They ended up wrestling and laughing in a messy knot. 

Noelle shook her head, still grinning. “This is Ava’s deadly charm at work. She’s got women falling for her left and right.” 

They were still joking around when Ivan walked over and called out, “Ava, come with me for a moment.” 

Ava quickly waved goodbye to her friends and followed him. 

Ivan had no clue how he was supposed to react. His brain was still short–circuiting. 

Their commanding officer–Laurent–had told him to fetch Ava. 

What kind of connection could those two possibly have? Training was already over. Ivan couldn’t imagine what business they would still share. 

With his thoughts in total chaos, Ivan led Ava to the door and immediately fled as if the place were on fire. 

Ava knocked. 

“Come in,” Laurent called. 

She pushed the door open. Laurent was inside, and just as she was about to greet him, she noticed another man in uniform standing nearby. His insignia matched Laurent’s. 

Ava closed the door, snapped to attention, and saluted. “Sir, you wanted to see me.” 

Her tone was polite and distant, like she was addressing a complete stranger. 

Matthew, standing off to the side, burst out laughing. 

Laurent shot him a sharp look. Matthew immediately coughed and pretended he was clearing his throat. 

Laurent said calmly, “Ava, this is Major Pyler. He’s a friend of mine.”

Matthew straightened up at once and put on a serious expression. “Nice to meet you, Ava. I’m Laurent’s senior. This is our first meeting–pleased to meet you.” 

Ava glanced at Laurent. He gave her a small nod. 

“Hello. I’m Ava Morren,” she said. “It’s nice to meet you, Major Pyler.” 

Matthew studied her face closely, looking her up and down. “Ava, haven’t we met somewhere before?” 

His memory was sharp. Anyone he’d seen even once tended to stick in his mind. 

Ava hesitated. “I don’t think so. I’m sure I don’t know you.” 

Laurent spoke up, “At Elysian last time. You were inside the elevator. He was standing outside with me. He saw you once” 

Ava immediately remembered that day. Back then, she hadn’t known any of them. Laurent had been outside the elevator, and there really had been two men in uniform beside him. 

So one of them had been Matthew. 

Matthew suddenly understood. “Well played, Laurent. You didn’t say a word back then. You kept that secret tight.” 

Laurent didn’t explain. Ava didn’t want to admit that she hadn’t even known him at the time, so she simply smiled. 

“Did you want to see me about something?” Ava asked. 

Laurent glanced at Matthew, then back at her. “Nothing in particular. I just wanted to see you. You’ll be heading back to school soon, and we probably won’t meet again for a while. I wanted one more chance to see you.” 

Ava frowned slightly. “Are you going back to the unit? If you know the schedule, tell me. I can come see you off.” 

Laurent shook his head. “No. Ava, I have another assignment.” 

He looked at Matthew, who shrugged. “All right. I’ll step out and give you two some space.” 

Ava stayed in the room with Laurent for more than half an hour. When it was time to leave, he walked her to the door and gently patted her head. “Go on. Once you’re back at school, send me a message.” 

“Okay,” Ava replied, nodding. 

Not far away, Ivan had never left the area. He stared in shock. 

Laurent and Ava? 

Laurent had just touched her head. 

That kind of intimacy made Ivan’s heart skip. A rumor suddenly flashed through his mind. Lately, people had been whispering that among this year’s freshmen, there was a girl married to a high–ranking officer.
