Caught off guard, Emily stared blankly at Alexander.

When he tried to withdraw his hand due to her silence, she snapped out of it, releasing his hand and saying nonchalantly, “What’s the point of going back? Having a go at Sophia? It won’t change a thing. Let them be.”

With that thought settled, she made her way over to where Molly and Tommy were.

She’d laid her stance bare; if Alexander still chose to intervene regarding Nancy and Sophia, it was his own business.

Whether his concern stemmed from Sophia’s potential bad influence or the fear of Nancy taking Sophia away, the decision was his.

Upon reaching Molly and Tommy, she found them done with lunch and engrossed in a game.

As Emily ale, a dull ache began in her lower belly. A quick mental check told her it was that time of the month, so she brushed it off.

The whole afternoon, Emily was a shadow of herself, drained of energy.

Alexander noticed but chalked it up to her being miffed about Sophia.

At five o’clock, the kindergarten event wrapped up.

Emily drove Molly back to Carter Manor and then headed to Joy Gardens.

It was six–thirty in the evening when she pulled into Joy Gardens, right in the thick of dinner time.

Ethan and Matthew were home, but Sophia was a no–show.

Rebecca had set the table with a spread of food. Spotting Emily entering without Sophia, Matthew asked, “Where’s Sophie? She should be back by now.”

Emily was thrown for a loop and instinctively looked at Ethan.

After Sophia’s cold–shoulder treatment, how could she know where the girl was?

Ethan shot a glance at Emily and then told Matthew, “Grandpa, Sophie’s at a friend’s place. She’ll have dinner there and come home later.”

A friend?

Emily nearly scoffed. Sophia was the talk of the kindergarten for all the wrong reasons. There was no way she had friends.

But she kept her mouth shut.

Seeing Sophia wasn’t coming, Matthew said, “Come on, Emily, take a seat. Dinner’s ready.”

Emily sat down, and another sharp pain stabbed at her lower abdomen.

Thanks to the pain, she’d been a wreck all day, her face as white as a sheet.

As she looked at the delicious spread, Emily’s stomach turned.

Matthew told Ethan to ladle some soup for her, and Ethan obliged.

But the sight of the rich, meaty soup made her lose her appetite.

Just as they were about to dig in, Emily said to Ethan, “Ethan, I gotta say something to you in front of grandpa.”

Ethan’s hand tightened around his fork. Before he could utter a word, Matthew chimed in, his voice carrying a hint of authority, “Yeah, whatever it is, say it in front of me. If Ethan’s been out of line, Emily, you can count on me to back you up.”

Those words, even of uncertain sincerity, brought a sense of comfort to Emily.

She offered a small smile and expressed her gratitude, “Thanks, Grandpa.”

Then, her gaze shifted to Ethan.

His chiseled features were set in a tight frown.

Emily could read the worry in his eyes, but she pressed on calmly. “Sophia caused a scene at the kindergarten event today by hurling insults. How do you propose we handle this?”
