Chapter 305 Fruitless

What Emily thought was just a nightmare turned out to be a terrifying reality. As she forced her heavy eyelids up, there he was, a man looming over her bedside.

She squinted hard, desperately trying to discern his identity, but the blurry vision hindered any certainly.

When Emily attempted to vocalize her protest, her throat was so parched and sore that the words came out as mere rasps, utterly incoherent.

The stranger’s hand traced a slow, sinister path from her abdomen upwards, finally lingering on her chest.

Accompanied by a mocking snicker, the man broke the silence, feigning pity. Such a gorgeous dame. Pity someone messed up that pretty face.”

A frigid shiver coursed through Emily’s body.

She recognized the voice instantly. It was Hugh.

As the sickening realization sank in, she felt Hugh’s fingers fumbling with the buttons of her hospital gown. With a supreme effort, Emily gasped out, Get lost!”

She stared up with bulging eyes, and Hugh’s leering face came

into sharp focus.

He wore a smug smile, his eyes alight with malevolent glee.

Emily’s heart sank. She knew she was in grave trouble. And then, Hugh undid the last button.

In an instant, she was exposed.

Hugh’s eyes lit up at the sight of her bruised form. Instead of revulsion, he seemed to be aroused by her plight.

The bloodstains on the sheets beneath her were like a siren call, luring him to cross the line.

All restraints abandoned, Hugh crawled onto the bed on his knees. He roughly pried her legs apart and wedged his own between them to prevent her from closing them.

Meanwhile, his hands started yanking at her clothes.

Emily fought back with all her remaining strength, kicking and thrashing. Hugh, let go of me, you bastard!”

But her resistance only fueled his lust.

Just as his hands moved to unfasten his own pants, the ward

door burst open.

A young nurse rushed in, her face set in a firm frown. Sir, the patient has just had surgery and needs rest. Please leave the room immediately.”

Irritated by the interruption, Hugh calmly refastened his pants.

As he climbed off the bed, he fixed the nurse with a menacing glare. You’d better keep your job in check, or you’ll be out on the streets before you know it.”

With that, Hugh let out a couple of loud, mocking laughs and swaggered out of the ward.

The nurse was clearly shaken by the threat, but she held her ground. After all, she couldn’t just stand by and watch such a thing happen.

A brief pause elapsed, during which Emily’s thoughts seemed to tumble like leaves in the wind. Then, she abruptly turned to the young nurse and murmured, Give me a hand with a call, would you?”

One glance at Emily’s battered form was enough for the nurse to piece things together. She knew this poor soul had been on the receiving end of a brutal beating.

Who’s it gonna be?inquired the nurse, pulling out her cellphone.

In a split second, a parade of faces flashed through Emily’s mind: Alexander, Aaron, Ryan, and Chloe.

Each name held a different story, a different connection, but none of them felt right at this moment.

As the silence stretched out, heavy and suffocating, Emily finally broke it. Call the cops, she said, her voice barely above a whisper but filled with determination.

The nurse hesitated for a second, her finger hovering over the keypad. Just then, as if out of a nightmare, Penelope stormed back into the ward.

Planting herself at the doorway, Penelope fixed a cold stare on the nurse and sneered, You sure about this? You wanna take on the whole Wilson family for a nobody?”

The Wilson family?

The name hit the nurse like a punch to the gut.

She paled, her resolve crumbling right in front of Emily’s hopeful eyes. With a heavy sigh, the nurse gave up on the idea of making that call.

Penelope wore a smug smile. Good call. Smart move,” she jeered before strutting out, her laughter trailing behind her.

The nurse couldn’t bring herself to look Emily in the eye. But before slipping out of the ward, she left her phone on the bedside table and scurried away.

Emily knew the nurse was in a bind, but the act of leaving the phone was still a pleasant surprise. Her heart filled with a new spark of hope.

Seizing the phone, Emily didn’t hesitate. She punched in the number and called the police.

A little over ten minutes later, the sound of sirens echoed in the distance. Two police officers burst into the ward, looking serious and efficient.

Without missing a beat, Emily blurted out, Officer, I need an injury assessment. Like, right now.”

The officer nodded, jotting down some notes. No problem, ma’am. We’ll arrange that.”

After the assessment was done, Emily’s eyes blazed with anger as she pleaded, I was beaten, and someone tried to assault me. I need you guys to do something about it. Make it right.”

The officer assured her, We got it. We’ll look into this as soon as possible.”

After calming Emily down a bit, the officers left the w to start

their investigation.

But it wasn’t long before one of them returned, a look of pity on his face.

Pulling up a chair beside the bed, he said, Sorry to tell you this, but the surveillance cameras in this ward are out of order.”

Emily felt like the ground had been pulled out from under her feet.

Her eyes welled up with tears, and she cried out, What do you mean? Go check other cameras! There must be something somewhere.”

Sensing her mounting frustration, the officer softened his tone. Don’t worry, ma’am. We’ve logged all the details. We’ll do our best to get to the bottom of this.”

Emily was seething. She wanted to see those culpritsEmma, Tyrone, Penelope, and Hugh—behind bars right away.

But there was nothing more she could do at the moment.

Once the officers left, a bitter realization dawned on Emily. The Wilson family had probably thought of everything.

Her call to the police might have been fruitless.

That night, sleep eluded Emily. She tossed and turned, replaying the events of the day in her mind.

As dawn broke, the doctors came in for their routine checkup.

They walked around the bed, pretending to examine her but not really looking at her injuries at all. One of the doctors, a middleaged man with a fake smile, asked, Emily, where are your family members?”

Emily didn’t say a word. She just stared at him with her bloodshot eyes, filled with a mix of anger and despair.
